BioWare teases new project

First image for EA-owned studio's newest IP depicts savage wreck in wasteland environment; full reveal due next month.

by

As it has in years past, Spike TV has managed to line up a fairly impressive number of game announcements and reveals for this year's televised Video Game Awards. Last week, show organizers teased that one of those reveals would be from BioWare, and today more information on that game emerged, courtesy of GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine.

It's unlikely this man is just discovering the ability to fly.

Today, the magazine's online arm posted concept art for BioWare's new game, which has yet to be titled. The image shows a wiry man of African descent being flung from a savagely wrecked all-terrain vehicle. A second, equally dilapidated truck is also shown with what appears to be a turret mounted in the bed. Heavily washed-out environments also appear to depict a desert wasteland.

Little else is known about BioWare's new project, other than that it will be an all-new property. BioWare has established a new studio to handle development on the title. A release window or platforms have yet to be revealed.

The 2011 VGAs takes place on December 10 and will be broadcast live on Spike TV and MTV2, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific.

Its a shame Bioware has fallen so far from their glory days, ever since they abandoned KOTOR, didn't make a Jade Empire 2, and got into bed with EA they have been going down hill fast. I hope one day they will start giving a crap about their old fans as KOTOR 3 is still something many want(TOR is a turd no one wanted with how it turned out), and many want a Jade Empire 2 which they said they want to do but have not delivered.

Im a big fan of wasteland settings, that being said there is already enough trademark series with that theme:Fallout, Rage, Borderlands. A little creativity never hurt.

@MJ12-Conspiracy thats what am saying we dont get much of those kinda games (Far Cry 2) we need a bit of a break from the current typical shooters focusing on Americas/Europeans, lets have an Asian/African setting with their fighting style (it can still be shooting just not the typical US army shooting)

This looks A LOT MORE LIKE UNCHARTED than it does fallout.

Lets all calm down and remember that THIS IS JUST A PICTURE. How can you condemn or condone a teaser PICTURE. So you didn't like DA2. I took a mouthful of car exhaust ridden air the other day and considered not breathing anymore, but then I realized that was extremely stupid. Also, don't think for a second that if you where an EA executive that you would be able to practice what you preach. Sick of it.

@steelmouth Have you played Far Cry 2 yet?? it's set in Africa, you play as a mercenary hunting an arms dealer named the Jackyl, you take all kinds of missions and get paid with diamonds, you can even track down something like 100 cases of diamonds..... The story kinda mirrors that of Lord Of war and Blood Diamond.....

Hakkology

No, no Bioware, you betraid my tiny trust with DA2 and i won't let you destroy Fallout as well.

looking closely at the art im thinking this isn't a fallout'ish type of story line. while they are obviously in a desert area the cars look fairly new (disregarding the one that just got wrecked) im thinking it probably has the setting fo some african country or similar area. everything else is just a guess

I feel like EA is using Bioware's brand reputation to dish out as many games as possible. They haven't even released two of their biggest games, and they're already announcing something new. Not that I will, or won't play it, it will depend on the direction, I'm just saying from an industry point of view. I'm still waiting for ME3, and I'm sure many people are waiting for SW MMO, so I don't get why rushing announcements like that. Anyway... I'm probably missing a point somewhere here or there.

well cant say I am exited about anything in that pic. Just doesn't seem like a Bioware style game...unless this is kinda like a Fallout style game....sure as hell hope its not a bland shooter/destruction derby game. I follow Bioware for its incredible story/characters/choice/voice acting/music.

Is it just me, or is the whole 'nuked-wastland' thing a bit, well, lazy? ''erm, there is nothing here, cos it all got blown up and rusted and stuff, erm, yes, thats right, thats why the visual design is bland and empty, uh huh, we did good''

Still waiting on that potential Announcement of Jade Empire 2, Bioware!! oh! and maybe a return to Shattered Steel and MDK if possible.

dude, they have always made rpg's. and i've met some of the owners (they're from my city) and they were born to make em.

Bioware's biggest mistake was becoming an RPG developer. But it isn't their fault. In the 1990s, if you want your game to have story and conversations, it has to be an RPG. So Bioware was forced to make an RPG, but good thing Black Isle helped them. However, they missed a chance to make an action game with conversations and story decisions; this would have been a revolution in the late '90s. Fortunately, they are now doing more games that fit the style they want.

@dre256x How the hell do you know it will use the Frostbite 2 engine when that is a concept art...

dre256x
dre256x

Seems to be using the Frostbite 2 engine, with all the high shader effects in the screen.. If this game is being develop for this Gen then it better come out next fall or spring 2013.. If its a trilogy, i expect it to continue over to next gen systems..

All this guessing over a picture, I don't get it.....whatever the game is it could be anything including that MMO based on Mass Effect that Bioware keeps hinting at...... Actually I don't know that it's MMO, I'm just guessing by the way they keep talking about a "always there universe".

Car Wars? Auto Duel? (Sure, technically those wouldn't be "new I.P.", but they'd be new to this generation -- and new to Bioware...)

Lets be thankful for what Bioware has done over the years and Mass Effect was already develop before EA put their hands on it. Let us thankful for their golden legacy that we got which has ended because nothing good will come from Bioware and EA in bed and EA keeps slowly taking all the bed sheets. I miss you Westwood TnT

new project!? hoooray! I was hoping dragon age 3 wasn't the game their revealing. But really this might be too many games, mass effect 3, swtor, dragon 3(I'm pretty sure it's confirmed), and another one. Bioware must be a big studio.

I realized when playing Mass Effect 2 that Bioware was done with RPG's. I do not wish them luck.

@tigertaru The greatest trait of Bioware also is their greatest weakness: with every release they reassess every aspect of their properties, leading to them to sometimes cut out the completely wrong thing. Its funny, Bioware is brillant at launching IPs, hence my excitement for this new game. It seems ME3 is scaling it back a bit to the good old ME1 days, but this is their first "3rd" entry in a series so...

Sepewrath
Sepewrath

@tigertaru They strip out unnecessary things and then put them back in when people whine enough i.e. Mass Effect 3. But as long as people continue to hang on to outdated "standards" that will continue to be the case.

tigertaru
tigertaru

@Hirasugi You're so on point with that. They seem to love stripping core elements in their sequels in exchange for more "action packed excitement." The trend is starting to scare me about what we will see with ME3 and DA3.

If it isnt from Bioware Edmonton, its not a bioware game.
