BioWare talks up next Mass Effect

BioWare's upcoming role-playing game "looks beautiful, fun, ambitious, and Mass Effect-y" says executive producer.

The upcoming and untitled Mass Effect game this week passed a milestone review, with various developers speaking positively about the shape of the game thus far.

"In a milestone review for next Mass Effect game. Team is doing outstanding work. Looks beautiful, fun, ambitious, and Mass Effect-y!" executive producer Casey Hudson said on Twitter.

Assistant director of design Aidan Scanlan and community manager Jessica Merizan chimed in with positive statements about the progress made so far on the game.

Describing the game's progress in July, cinematic director Ken Thain said, "This sh**'s gettin' real!"

Though BioWare is enthused by the progress the next Mass Effect is making, the public won't get to see the game for some time, according to BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy.

"Sadly, it probably will still be a while before we show anything publicly," he said.

BioWare announced the next Mass Effect game last September. It will not feature Commander Shepard, as his story came to a close in last year's Mass Effect 3.

The untitled game will run on the Frostbite 3 engine and, according to Hudson, will be "fresh and new."

Hey Bioware - how about you finish ME3 before hyping something new? I've seen all those polls proving that the vast majority of ME fans are still pissed. The only thing that saved the horrendous conclusion was CleverNoobs' utterly convincing trilogy of Indoctrination Theory documentaries.

Shame on you Bioware for not taking full advantage of this concept. It would have gone down as one of the most epic endings in gaming history rather than the most infamous.

Hello EA & Bioware.....NOBODY CARES (After your epic fail at endings). Bring something to the table like...i dunno a live demo and maybe you can hype the mob, until then please shut up.

In gaming industry,this has happened many times with many great games.When the franchises were brought up they looked really amazing,but then they messed up by overstretching the franchise.i dont want this happen to MS4

As for Bioware talking up Mass Effect.  It's something they've always done when discussing games that were in development. Problem is they use to be able to back it up.  On the Bioware forum alone there is a massive thread showing broken promises from pre-release statements for Mass Effect 3 that should make anyone skeptical.  I really hope ME4 can be a great game, as theres little point in rooting for a potentially great game to fail.

When Mass Effect 3 was in development I felt like a kid counting down the days until Christmas.  With the next Mass Effect I liken it too someone waiting for a loved one to return from a war.  Will they survive and even if they do will they still be themselves.  Obviously this is an extreme analogy as waiting for a video game is nothing like having a loved one fighting overseas, but at the same time it's sad that myself and many other fans can't count on Mass Effect games to be a slam dunk anymore.

The series was fantastic. I agreed with the ending. As long as we don't have to play as James Vega, the GUIDO Jersey Shore guy...I'll play it.

Mass Effect were fantastic games. Ending was fine, compared to what people bitched about. Hopefully we won't play as that stupid asshat James Vega....if that's the case I think everyone will agree that NO ONE wants to play as a Jersey Shore GUIDO.

Let the series die and start a new ip, the trilogy is over you already pulled a lucas with the ending of 3 no need to drag the franchise through the mud anymore

Well, if they make ME4 like the "true" Bioware made ME1, it's gonna be great, but seriously, when I see what EA did with ME2 and ME3... I feel sick ! It has nothing to do with the scenario cause it was meant to be that way (and I f*ckin loved it), but with the game's mechanics, these games are just regular corner-shooters "run, cover, shoot" and I don't like that, return to the basics or DIE (no, I'm not threatening EA or Bioware lol)

Bioware exists in name only, EA owns them completely.  It's not like EA and Funcom, where EA is just publishing for Funcom while Funcom retain all rights to their games.  Remember before Greg and Ray retired, they were EA, not Bioware, executives.

It will be "fresh and new"? I know what EA/BioWare's idea of "fresh and new" are and it seems to mean "turn it into a generic cover shooter with the illusion of choice and empty promises". The fact that one of the people responsible for the pile of crap that was Gears of War: Judgement is working on this makes me even less interested in the game. It's going to be Mass Gears of War Effect: Judgement 2. Not interested. Go back to the original game, guys. I loved that game despite all of its flaws.

Yeah..... pass. What's the point of investing in another series if they're more than happy to molest our behinds at the end? I'll stick to CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 for my RPG fix.

I would really love a Mass Effect game that took place when the first Mass Relays were made/discovered. Would be cool, sort of like the beginning of how all these alien races/species met.

I don't now what their next game is going to be like, but I can bet last nights soup that its not going to be a RPG. Shooter with 2 sets of equipable armour excl. DLC more like.

For people who say that the series is over, the genre - space opera - is huge. Star Trek and Star Wars proved that. The universe is a pretty big place.

I can't wait.

I have no idea how can they continue game from Mass Effect 3...like what they gonna introduce smth MORE sinister then Reapers now ?!

I wonder if Im actually the only one that wants Mass Effect franchise to stay closed..but EA will try to milk a cow.

MorinthForever

How can anyone be excited about this? None of them said anything, not one word about what the actual game is about/features other than the engine used to run it. This is just another hype causing PR article. That's it.

Also, ME3 was poorly paced and badly written( except Tuchanka and Rannock because ALL the writers worked on it, unlike the other 80% of the story). The ending was just the sour icing that blatantly ripped off Deus Ex and had the hero do the villain's job through Space Magic or Refuse(quit) then die. Then there's the "Breath Scene"...nothing but trolling when there's no intention to ever address it. "Meta game it" is not a solution either.

Glad to see the sci-fi genre tarnished by a lack of understanding of the writing process and zero respect for character protection.

texasgoldrush

Seriously, there are two types of people.

People who are smart and actually get the ending, and people who don't...who ignore all the clues, foreshadowing, and the themes leading up to the ending, who wanted the same old hero story, instead of actually using their heads.

The Extended Cut is the complete ending, everything is there and everything is in the narrative.

elfwhoever

@vlainstrike You have to keep in mind that apparently they must be using some kind of mind altering drugs over there at Biobeware.  Only explanation I have heard suggested that peer reviewed missions and story lines were the norm and then suddenly CH gets this brilliant idea to not do that for the ending. And IT SHOWED! So to quote Cartman at all the EA drones at Bioware...."Screw you guys! I'm going home."

theCCyberDDemon
theCCyberDDemon

@LastMatic lol Well they should keep doing games they are good on it. But after everything they should just call it Mess Affect 4 or maybe Master Infect, but surely not a Mass Effect anymore.

ORB1T4LOne
ORB1T4LOne

@j_kizi I love "episodes zero", so here's my idea : they should make a game with the race that created the Reapers, we'd play 100h knowing we're all going to die, but the point of that would be "hey, let's hide the plans for the Crucible so the future races can use it and stick it up our stupid genocidal creation's ass !" Oops, I forgot : SPOILER ALERT.

DespVand
DespVand

@j_kizi What would be the point of that? You already know what happens! All those species die! For millennia upon millennia until the all powerful human shepard comes along and kills all these uber duper super powerful machines almost single handedly!

@Cashmoney007 and dragon age III which has better be better than origins for their financial sake!

ORB1T4LOne
ORB1T4LOne

@Naktls I'd be glad to give them my savings if they find a way to continue this games series, that'd be something crazy cause that's almost impossible. The Reapers War was the most epic sci-fi war I've seen in my whole life and believe me, I've seen a lot of sci-fi series, movies, read lots of books, and Mass Effect has nothing to be compared to (at least, IMO). But, huh, I really wonder how they can make a sequel after the end of Mass Effect 3 so I'm looking forward to it and I can't wait.

lonewolf315
lonewolf315

@Naktls I want it to stay closed. The series peaked at Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 3 was a disappointment. And not just because of the ending.

Bigger (or more sinister) doesn't necessarily mean better.  You can have a compelling and enjoyable gaming experience where the stakes are smaller.

blindbsnake

@texasgoldrushyou are completely right, there is nothing to not understand about the endings... DO a crime and pretend you have won... The end...Oh, and then pretend you are the cleverest guy in here, and that there is something more to understand...

MaxRoi04
MaxRoi04

@texasgoldrush  So you're saying that an ending that completely ignores all your choices throughout the trilogy  and your  ridiculous amount of military power, is actually brilliant?

Please explain this to me

iCruze
iCruze

@rofeta @Naktls rofeta....exactly what i wanted to say. I would actually prefer the main villain/enemy to be more my size so i can fight him/her/it direct on. One man or a small group against huge building sized enemies isnt always the best. The fact that they are not returning Shepard is good, cause his story got to a close and im fine with that. They can though make some cameos from other characters, like say Liara (cause Asari live a thousand years etc etc...), to add a little familiarity to the universe of ME. And continuing from ME3 isnt that impossible, cause they have the possibility to choose the time scale when events occure. They can be after the reaper invasion or before, so there is hope that with a good enough ensemble of creative minds this could even turn out better than the first 3...you never know.

texasgoldrush
texasgoldrush

@blindbsnake @texasgoldrush

Well, you didn't get it.

The main theme of the entire game was about how victory has its price and its sacrifice.

The ending is nothing new, Shepard made these kind of decisions well before the ending. Play "Arrival" again.

@MaxRoi04 @texasgoldrush

It's art man!

Maybe it was like 2001 a Space Odyssey - you have to have been on drugs at the time to have understood it.

Seriously texasgoldrush - I have analyzed it thoroughly and there really is nothing there but a phuck up. ME4 (or whatever they want to call it) will likely show this.

What I don't get it why not admit it? When I phuck up delivering new software I say "yeah oops we phucked up". I don't tell the client ummm...it's art!

@texasgoldrush

I don't like to think Shepard died in Synthesis but ascended ( a pretty deep a meaningful idea to but into a game ). many Eastern religions have a theme that the meaning of life is to join God ( or sometimes referred to  as the universal energy of the universe ) which Shepard achieved and  a boost up for everyone else .

lonewolf315

@blue_shift_91 @texasgoldrush @blindbsnake When you invest 100+ hours total playing all three games to make sure you had the maximum amount of war assets, all your squad members lived, they were all loyal, and that the Normandy was upgraded all the way just to learn that none of your choices mattered because they needed to enforce a static ending.

Point of note. You have millions of options to pick from in life. Also, people don't play video games to be reminded of real life. Life is full of unhappy endings and unsatisfying conclusions that often lack closure and are full of regrets and the knowledge that you don't get a do-over.

People play games as a way to escape real life. Not to be reminded how much life sucks.

texasgoldrush
texasgoldrush

@MorinthForever

You do not have to choose it, and no its not a generic happy ending......Shepard dies always in Synthesis ending.

MorinthForever
MorinthForever

@blue_shift_91 @texasgoldrush @blindbsnake Actually there is the generic happy ending, Synthesis. That ending where every living thing is genetically raped by Space Magic. Love it when the hero throws away every moral they have when the enemy offers a easy way out...just like real life.

blue_shift_91
blue_shift_91

@texasgoldrush @blindbsnake

seriously. most people i've spoken to who complain about the ending really want nothing more than the generic, happy ending. the galaxy unites, puts up a big fight, blows up all the reapers. and everyone lives happily ever after, with some sad parts sprinkled on the side. everything is black and white. no morally gray areas to traverse. no consideration for the purpose of the reapers is necessary. everyone always has a million options to pick from, just like in real life...right?

ridiculous.

texasgoldrush
texasgoldrush

@pancho_villia88 @MaxRoi04 @texasgoldrush

No, you didn't.

Because if you did, you would find that the extended cut ending covers every theme of the entire series. If you paid attention, you will find that many aspects of the ending are rooted not only in ME3, but the past games.
