BioWare on next Mass Effect: "Sh**t's gettin' real"

Cinematic director says fans will be "really excited to play this story," while producer teases "things are really moving forward."

Production on the next Mass Effect game is moving ahead at full steam and with enthusiasm from the development team, according to comments from lead designers made on Twitter.

"New #MassEffect story and main character reviews today. This sh**'s gettin' real! I think the fans will be really excited to play this story," cinematic director Ken Thain said.

Mass Effect producer Mike Gamble echoed Thain's comments, saying, "Lots of great @masseffect meetings today. Things are really moving forward. It's great to be involved in the universe again."

BioWare has not released any official information about the next Mass Effect title, but the developer has not shied away from giving vague details about the project.

Yesterday, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said the upcoming Mass Effect game will "be friendly both to old fans and newcomers." He added that the game will retain the franchise's open-mindedness when it comes to gender options and GLBTI-inclusive stories.

BioWare announced the next Mass Effect game last September. It will not feature Commander Shepard, as his story came to a close in last year's Mass Effect 3.

The untitled game will run on the Frostbite 3 engine and, according to executive producer Casey Hudson, will be "fresh and new."

To help the oldschool and newbies it is a easy task. Just kill the main character and then you ressurect him with a high tech stuff.

More weapon and armor customization would be nice.  In ME3 we just collected money to buy the best weapon on the market.  That was boring.

What if I don't want more Mass Effect Sh** from you lol.

What if I enjoyed the three games(ending little less) and am happy to let this trilogy sit nostalgically on my self well you delicate your talents to a wonderful new IP.

Any time they take great games that were suppose to end and try to keep running with them it goes down hill and ruins the old memory's of the good ones.

So...it wasn't "real" to begin with? It took after 3 games to get real?

"BioWare on next Mass Effect: 'Sh**t's gettin' real'" Umm, what? Sh**t's getting real? As in Shiit, the people of the Shia muslim branch?

I thought the ending to Mass effect 3 was perfect, fit the universe of what it was trying to achieve, exactly how it should of been.  What OTHER ending would of been important to you, that wasnt completely explained over the course of ME1, ME2 and ME3????

IF you knew from the start that it was a linear RPG, Like all bioware games are, which i did. The codexs and story explained everything over the whole 3 games in perfect detail. I never knew why people was so upset over it. it was great.

BUT in saying that. What more is there to see? Ive seen the whole universe of ME, theres nothing more left to experience in that universe. All the main points of that universe have been discovered by the player. Now i know what the Presidium truly is and what the Keepers truly are , i know the reapers come every 50'000 years, ive been to all the main planets. I know that soveriegn was NOT a geth design , i know all about the Quarians and the geth situation. What else is there to discover? What else is there to experience? Maybe the Volus planet and the big elephant dudes maybe. the best thing i can think of and the only reason id be interested in playing another Mass Effect series , is if they completely recreate the entire original experience again, in 5 years time, when graphics get amazing again on the PS4. Like a nextgen version of the whole trilogy. I really cant be bothered with publishers milking this amazing series like they are doing to Assassins Creed or Resident Evil. This series deserves to go gracefully or be recreated in 5 years time.

This trilogy was a piece of art, Like Star wars or Lord Of the Rings, dont ruin it.

God I was pissed off with the ending of Mass Effect 3. But, here I am - throwing my money at the screen like the trained BIOWARE seal that I am. Sigh.

Take my money, but please don't make me look you in the eyes.

If I remember correctly another article I read said that the new one will be a prequel to the series and if that is the case I swear to god they better not put in new technology that never existed at the time. Ex. They better not put in thermal clips when they never existed until after ME1. Every prequel to a series does the same damn thing(Halo Reach, Gears of War Judgement).

When they turned Shepard into Neil Patrick Harris, I lost all interest in the Mass Effect series.

I've yet to play ME3 but given the price it's going for these days I'll probably pick it up.  Would I be missing much if I don't get any of the dlc (not including the new endings)?

Just give me a variety of species to be in the beginning like Dragon Age Origins and have them have back stories that lead them to a similiar path like becoming a spectre since in DAO all that happened for an origin was a nice hour of gameplay and boom had great back story if you could add that kind of a beginning I would be in 100%

I cannot wait for this. Mass Effect was my favorite trilogy ever and I just cant wait to see what the crew at Bioware has in store next. The ending was a bit lackluster but other than that the third game was the best in the series I really couldn't understand the big outrage of the ending it wasn't epic but it wasn't total shit either. It was a good balanced ending. Now its time for a new chapter in ME.

whoever agreed/wrote the shit ending of Mass Effect 3 (and ruined what could have been a an EPIC sci fi game trilogy possibly better than star trek and star wars ?) better not be involved in the creation of the new game  in any way!! Bioware u better listen to us and get your act together!

@nyran125tk Honestly the only thing I'd want is an MMO where I can go wherever the f*ck I want and do what the f*ck I want. I like the universe too much to not buy the new one sadly

@JohnTheGrudge Definitely get Leviathan and Citadel dlc's they are very much worth it. Omega was a hunk of shit so I like to think it never existed.

@FolkIore yeah that was my favorite, i like the band-of-brothersy adventure feel

@GhostHawk196 You do relize they said the same thing about ME3 and they improved the combat system nicely compared to ME2 or ME.

Didn't solve that lol using the team millions of dollars and years of time kinda keeps them from working on a new IP hehe.

true! and besides, most of the things we like about the series are story, acting, and epicness

which are semi-separate from mechanics

People over-exaggerate how bad it is.  I played it after the backlash and while it isn't a great ending, it's still an ending that works.  I think people just wanted their ending to be customized based on their decisions but they had stock endings instead.

If you've played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, it's similar to that game's ending decisions.  It's not bad, and did not hinder my enjoyment of the series in any way at all.  ME3 remains my favorite of the series by far, I've put in like 120 hours into it.  Definitely check out.

@Atila688 @OldKye @jtg1993007 I've been through this before many times and it's even more apparent after The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

If it's a completely different game that has nothing to do with the others don't use the name at best your hurting the potential at worsted your lying to your consumers to sell a unrelated product.

And if it is a extension of the other games or the universe then your wasting time that could be spent on a better new IP trying to use a already well know name to guarantee sales keeping you from breaking the mold.

Either way it's a safe bet for money sake not cause it's what the Dev's really want to be spending their time creating and people aren't shelling out the cash for this ploy like they use too it's a dying business practice.

Atila688
Atila688

@OldKye @jtg1993007 It's a whole different story.. just happens to be in a mass effect universe.. Shepard's story is over.. just consider this a different game in the same universe..

& u should prob give it a chance.. just like there's a chance of failure, there's also a chance of success..

CalamityKait

@ddoggbritt16 @K-A_L-A_D-U_R Those who disliked it felt it had plotholes and the final decision and cinematic didn't adequately reflect player choices made in the series.  The very end consisted of a three-way choice that led to three largely similar cinematic sequences differing chiefly in terms of what color they were.

The extended ending filled some plotholes, added some new material to battle cutscenes, added some new dialog in final conversations, especially the love interests, and added new slide-show epilogues (thing Dragon Age: Origins or Jade Empire) that do vary greatly depending on the final choice and others made in the game.  I found it to be a big improvement.

I personally didn't mind the ending, as I saw the game as a whole as presenting endings that did depend heavily on player choices throughout the game.  Each act ends with a major storyline conclusion that differs greatly based on player choice.

@cnx2022 @NeonNinja @kishen95 It is good. The whole Mass Effect trilogy is probably some of the best gaming experiences you'll get. Don't listen to the idiots who bash the entire game because the ending wasn't perfect.

Its got a 93 Metacritic and 5 million copies sold. It may be the best selling Bioware game ever.

Compare it with DA2, which sold only around 2 million, half of what DAO sold and had MC in the low 80's.

DA2 is objectively a disappointment, ME3 is not.
