BioWare discusses "competition" with The Witcher

Writer Patrick Weekes says it's not true that video game companies hate each other; hopes The Witcher 3 is fantastic.

Despite what some might think, video game companies aren't out for each other's throat, according to BioWare writer Patrick Weekes. Asked during a recent PAX Australia panel how he views competition with CD Projekt Red's Witcher series, Weekes said he hopes gamers buy games from both companies.

"I think 'compete' is the wrong word. I think there's a story that people want to tell, where the video game companies hate each other and 'our game is going to crush theirs.' And that's really not true," Weekes said. "I came to BioWare because I love games. And I hope that the next Witcher game is fantastic and I hope that ours is fantastic, and I hope that people buy both and play both."

"Every time another great game comes out, and raises the bar, that's not threatening; it's only threatening if we don't think we can ever do anything better," he added. "So we look at something and go, 'That's a fantastic game. How am I going to incorporate that awesome thing and do it in a BioWare fashion?'"

Weekes explained that with every new BioWare title, the company tries to advance further and further, so much so that past games look "antiquated and quaint."

"So, no, I think our biggest competition, and the only thing we absolutely want to crush, is what we've done in our past games," he said. "That's one of the reasons I'm so proud to be on the Dragon Age team. It's one of the reasons I was proud to be on the Mass Effect team. Every new project we said, 'Let's look at the best things we did on our previous game and let's see how we beat that. Let's see how we make that look antiquated and quaint as we go into our next game.'"

BioWare is currently working on Dragon Age: Inquisition, a new Mass Effect game, and an untitled new IP.

Games are tough to make, and there's all kinds of factors along the way that could ruin the development of a title.  I think another way of putting it is there's much more respect shown when a title is made, than negative opinions like jealousy and rivalry.

sorry I just replayed witcher 1 and 2

bioware already lost.....

unless they like... preform a 180 in DA3 and like do everything right  and ignore every shity advice an EA suit tries to tell them

I mean witcher 3 will be like the best RPG in the history of humanity, it will like have everything every other game lacks, like skyrim's scale without the lame story and so on and so forth

Biodrones are really dense... they think a COMPANY name actually makes games... News Flash BIOWARE is gone. The founders are gone, the lead developers are gone, Mass Effect 3 had the main writer Drew that did ME 1 and ME 2 and CREATED the ME universe got transferred off the project doing SWTOR. They let that Hack Walters totally chance the STORY on you people as he stepped in to be lead writer.

There is no BIOWARE for you to have loyalty too. The people that made Jade Empire,Dragon Age Origins , KOTOR 1 , ME1 ,and ME2 are GONE! Now all you have is a brand name and you blindly love that brand name and think it actually makes games... Think just a little bit. All you have left is Casey Hudson as the producer that straight face lied to the world about what was in ME3, many people brought you the articles where he promised all these features AFTER the game had gone gold. He knew they weren't in there, every decision you made effected the ending etc...

So, all you have left are Mark and Casey... and you're excited about that? Bioware fans are the new Square fans... the people that made FFVII are long gone and you just can't admit it... Do the gaming world a favor and give your money and loyalty to companies that STILL have great game developers working for them. Cd Project Red, Bungie, Arenanet, etc... give those companies your loyalty because they listen and make games for gamers. Not someone that has a super ego and goes back on promises and claims "artistic integrity" aka we do what we want.

I for one enjoy both and gladly buy both.  Games of that scale take years to make (unless you rush out something half baked, DA2...)  So there is no reason there isn't room for several big RPG makers out there.

I don't even understand the comparisons, people just wanting to cause drama. They are two very different games.

Similarities? Third person fantasy RPG. After that they branch into totally unique entities and I think both will be great.

Regardless of everyone's various opinions on DA2, i'm looking forward to both games, although the polish devs of the witcher are my favourite developers by far.

Weekes sits on a throne of lies.  Comparing Bioware's Dragon Age to CDProjekt's Witcher series is like bringing a bottle of grape juice to a high class wine tasting convention.

I will not be buying any future Bioware titles new at any rate.  It's clear where Bioware stands on giving a crap about their customers.  Hint: They don't.

"Every new project we said, 'Let's look at the best things we did on our previous game and let's see how we beat that."

Bioware I want to love you, I really, really, really do, but this flat out isn't true for DA2. There's no way that's what you were thinking when you made that game.

EA/Bioware should be envious of CDPR, they have a superior business model, cater to their fans instead of profits and produce superior games. EA has long been an awful company, they value the almighty dollar over quality, pushing games to be published before they are finished, ruining series like ME and DS by trying to make them action shooters and suckering customers with lousy day 1 DLC and micro-transactions any chance they get.

CD Projekt Red can't compete with Bioware in my opinion. Witcher is respectable, but nothing stellar, and doesn't provide a fresh perspective on the role-playing genre. Then again, they are working without major funding, which is admirable.

i want to say like shango but i m more like patrick week i want the 2 game would be fantastic i want to buy both because i m a rpg fan  but i say here and now if dragon age: I is disapointed like da2 i will never buy a bioware game after it

Who would buy a failed Skyrim clone from a shitty developer(EA Bioware) ,while you can buy a true rpg game from a pro consumer (CD Projekt Red).

Two very different franchises in my opinion, therefore I shall buy both and not engage in arguments over which one's better...

It felt like they kind of forced the story down our throats with the Witcher series so far, a good game is like a good book..and a good book is like a good lover: welcoming, not pushy- once you get enthralled in the experience then they can shove the story down your throat...lol

CD Projekt = Day One Purchase

Bioware (at the moment) = Bargain Bin, if the reviews are ok.

If they're not released at the same time, they're not really competition.

I like Bioware games, but I hate all the crap that EA makes them put in like advertising DLC within the game.

@vadagar1 It's funny that he thinks it's worth choosing whatever disappointing product Bioware will make along side The Witcher 3. I don't plan on buying another Bioware game if there's a superior alternative.

@vadagar1 Were you not listening?  it isn't a competition.  We can like both.

@Shango4 I thought Mass Effect 3 was fantastic, and this is coming from someone who also thought that Mass Effect 1, Dark Souls, and The Witcher 2 were fantastic.

Your misplace hate towards a great company is laughable.

vadagar1

@Rat_King NOT REALLY they are pretty much the exact SAME type of game the lore is different

Aegruss
Aegruss

@Chr0noid That's oddly fitting, but not in the way you think.

High class wine tasting has been generally accepted to be nothing more than an in-depth exercise in the placebo effect.  And the Placebo effect is, incidentally, is the only reason people thought Mass Effect 3 was less than amazing.

dogbert784

@Rat_King I guess that's the time they said, "Let's make some good easy money off this franchise."

But they'll never do that again...right?

Kelleyb4947
Kelleyb4947

@alsatian86 the ME world is way larger than the witcher world...the dlc is necessary when people buy the game used and the DEVs see NONE of that money...

Rat_King

@TheEveryMan Witcher 1 I can understand, but I do not understand how you can say Witcher 2 did not provide a fresh perspective. As someone who has played A LOT of RPGs for 2 decades now, I thought the Witcher 2 was one of the freshest RPGs to come out in a long time. Care to elaborate?

Kelleyb4947
Kelleyb4947

@TheEveryMan totally agree, I'll be buying their game and supporting them for what they are doing- but I still fill Bioware is capable of much much more...they have more tools and more money to work with.

@alpha_unit97 i will get both too but i KNOW witcher 3 is gonna be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better

@puppy_maclove Crazy most people I know think the exact opposite....most people I know hated their attempt at witcher 2..I'll get the next one like I got this one, but I've never been disappointed like that from a Bioware game ever...from baulders gate to ME3, they're a great company.

Rat_King

@vadagar1 @Rat_King I've played both quite extensively and I'd have to disagree. Only similarity is third person fantasy RPG. To each their own I suppose.

Rat_King
Rat_King

@dogbert784@Rat_King Well in the past few years companies, including Bioware, have actually been listening to gamers and making changes to accommodate their complaints. And it has been in development for several years now, which is usually a good sign.

So here's to hoping that trend continues!

@Kelleyb4947 @puppy_maclove

In the past Bioware were a great company but lately they going downhill, that's patently obvious. Kotor is still my fav game of all time though.

But IMO DA2 was a terribly average game that was embarrassing in comparison to TW2. From size, world, story, graphics etc TW2 was next gen compared to DA2. ME3 & SWTOR are just ok and not to the old BW standard.

@Kelleyb4947 You've never disappointed by a BioWare game???

Wow.

Someone likes the bar low.

bruta

@Kelleyb4947 @puppy_maclove much as i love baldur's and what BW made in the past, their recent work under cancer EA went downhill

look at da2, look at swtor... poor content and heavy milking.
i really really have my doubts about how da3 is gonna be, got this feeling im gonna be very disappointed

now regarding CDPR i dont think there is even 1 person in this world to say something bad against them, theyre on top and well deserved

Poodlejumper
Poodlejumper

@Kelleyb4947 Oddly I agree with most of your scores (most are 9s in my book...with BG 1 and 2 a 10. ME1 an 8. and JE a 7) but DA2 was a 5/10.  Would have been lower but it wasn't broken.  Just trite, rushed, sloppy and uninspired.  It was garbage coming from a Developer who has been known for the gold standard and proof of what their publisher has made them.  It's the only BioWare game (aside from SWOTOR) that I could not finish.  It was just crap.  It would have been crap if it didn't come from BioWare.

Come to grips with it.  It's a rushed crap action game with a skill tree marketed to the lowest common denominator.  You mash attack in it.  Your character is a pregenerated pile of uninteresting dreck...all n the interest of making their development job easier.  It was loaded with DLC (Day one and you pay for it all) and had a crapload of horrible pandering pre-orders to the level I have not witnessed since (Ser Issaac of Clark???)

Crap  I'd need a banjo to pluck as I rapidly go over all the flaws both within the game as well as the overall structure of BioWare and EA's promotion and development.

They're no longer BioWare.  The same people don't run it.  The original brilliant teams have gone elsewhere and not left suitable heirs.  The doctors left 5 years TO THE DAMN DAY (Read: contractual fulfilment) that they signed on with EA.  It's a corpse puppet.

I've played every RPG they've made since creation.  It's not the same company.  There's better.  DA2, ME3, SWTOR???   It's time to bury zombie
Caesar.

Kelleyb4947
Kelleyb4947

@Poodlejumper DA 2 and ME 2 were probably a 7/10; DA 1 was a 10/10, ME1 was a 10/10, KOTOR 1 was 10/10, Jade Empire was a 10/10, and baulders gate was the Halo of RPGs (by that I mean it did things that no other game had done at the time) certainly a 10/10...

they've used and perfected 4 separate game engines for RPG games. You just simply can't have a conversation about RPGs, where they come from and where they are going, without mentioning the affect of Bioware on the market..these are facts man, whether you want to live in the present saying they're all washed up or not, what they've done for the genre is spectacular and I support them because of it.

Poodlejumper
Poodlejumper

@Kelleyb4947   Wow.

"DA 2 was about as good as the Witcher 2"

There's times when one transcends common sense, logic, and the blatantly obvious in the name of "opinion".

Kelleyb4947
Kelleyb4947

@bruta @Kelleyb4947 @puppy_maclove DA 2 was about as good as the Witcher 2 to me, and by that I mean it wasn't very good. DA2 was the worst game Bioware released, and it wasn't all that bad.. and maybe it's only because I didn't play the fist witcher I just read reviews, synopsis', and summaries; maybe my lack of knowledge of the first game really clouded my judgement, because if I didn't play DA1 and still played DA2 I would probably have said the same about DA2 as I'm saying about Witcher 2..

never the less, Bioware coming out with a new Mass Effect, a new KOTOR, a new DA (which is supposed to be a mix of DA 1 and 2, which is awesome),  they said they might make another Jade Empire which was an incredible game for it's time...I'm just excited because KOTOR1, DA1, Jade Empire, and ME1 had legendary stories attached to them.they weren't like the witcher 2 which to me...was focused more on looking good than being good..just my opinion. I'll be getting the witcher 3 as well and I'll take all these comments into consideration, and I'll try to have a more open mind I guess...hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised.
