BioShock Infinite's Ultra Settings on Nvidia Titan

Here's how good BioShock Infinite can look on a top-spec PC. Update: now with 2560x1600 resolution YouTube videos.

BioShock Infinite is a gorgeous game, one that mixes an impeccable sense of style, art, and technical mastery. It's safe to say that Irrational has created one of the most visually striking games of this generation, but just how good can the game look? The UK team ran BioShock Infinite at Ultra Quality settings with a resolution of 2560x1600 using the beefiest in-office PC: an Intel i7 3960X processor overclocked to 4.2GHz and 16GB of PC3-12800 G.Skill RAM lodged into an ASUS CG8890 motherboard, powered with an Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan.

Here are a few spoiler-free (unless you want to know absolutely nothing about the game whatsoever, in which case back away now) shots of the game's first 30 minutes (click on an image to see it in full size) alongside two YouTube videos showing the game at 2560x1600 resolution.

@riceymo91 I'm running the exact same as you except I'm running 7870's in CFX, it runs fine except you will need more RAM, (I will need more RAM to play it as well)

I wonder if my 8.8GHZ Octoprocessor with liquid nitorgen to keep it cool desktop/labtop/ tablet will run this on the max.

Listen guys posting your specs isnt really going to make someone go "what, your specs are gangsta". Well except for my futuristic rig. Get owned

Love the unreal engine... on my old HD5870 I can play this game maxed out on 1080p

I don't think it will handle 2560x1600 very well though.

im running i5 3.5 ghz OC 3.8 ghz, with radeon 7870 and 8 gb ram. Think i can play on ultra specs?

Looks like the PS360 port that it is. you gotta be a freak to pay that much cash just to enjoy xbox scraps with some extra aliasing.

Well it does look nice in 2560x1440. Wonder if my water cooled 4.8 ghz CPU and twin GTX 670s in SLI can run it maxed out at that resolution.

Can anyone recommend me a not-too-expensive upgrade for a GTX275?

Budget would be around $150-200 and something which could possibly play this on ultra (@1920*1080).

by the time the next gen systems comes out, the PC will already be light years ahead in performance and technology.  nothing beats the PC. sorry fanboys

I think the differnce between BF3 on console VS PC is a much bigger differnce. BF3 is the ONLY game so far I have seen I that looked so much better I wish I had bought it on the PC instead of 360. Other games it just doesn't bother me.

you can steal your PC games sure. but I dont and wouldnt. I can sell my console games back. what about PC games?

I play 100 games a year and pay about 20 bucks a game becuase I buy them for 60 and sell them for 40.

I play some PC games. but its just not that big a deal as some you make it out to be. my only regret is BF3.

i7 waste of money. only gets you hyperthreading which isnt used in games. 16gb of ram. waste of money. the most memory intensive games only use 8gb AT THE MOST!

sad how all the ELEITE PC gamers get sucked into marketing to buy the "best" for their system, when a SSD drive would make a bigger differnce than a i7 (vs i5) or 16gb (vs8) ram

It's not like it's using tesselation or anything. For an example of a game that truly looks massively improved on the PC, looks no further than Arkham City, a truly gorgeous, richly detailed game in DX11.

If by now, 2013, you concider yourself to be a gamer and your only option is still a console, you missed a train that left 2 years ago...

@tionmedon  My GTX 680 blew it away!!! A 650TI could do it too!

@macpasty haha obviously, frames never goes below 60 fps on my 2600k @ 4.5 and single 7970 @ stock. UE3 is an aging, optimized masterpiece.

kaio37k
kaio37k

@jasopan I had the same card and upgraded for this game for the same reason (to play on ultra at same res.)

Get a 660Ti (Try used) May be a little over bdget but I traded my 275 and $190 for the 660Ti.

I'm now getting 60 FPS on Ultra. Frame drop is literally 2...

kaio37k
kaio37k

@jasopan TRUST ME.

I had a GTX 275 as well but was pulling like 30 FPS on Low.

I upgraded to the GTX 660 Ti  and am now getting 60FPS on Ultra at 1920 x 1080p.

I traded my GTX 275 and payed $190 for it, Hopefully you can do the same or just find a good used one. (Don't worry about the GPU being used unless it doesnt' work.) BTW I got the 660 Ti for the same reason.

4leggedostrich
4leggedostrich

@jasopan GTX660 is close that price range, and if you get the MSI version, it comes with good overclocking tools. I was able to play this on Ultra settings with a framerate of 50-60 fps at 1920x1200.

gotenks157
gotenks157

@jasopan I just got a gtx 660 for about $240. if you can stretch your busget a bit then the 660 has so far been running this on ultra at almost full frame rate. i also have a i3 processor and 24GB of ram just so u have an idea.

EDIT: as a side note. anything lower than a 660 may not run this on ultra very smooth. check out videocardbenchmark dot net. Try to find cards with a score of at least 4000.

4leggedostrich

@bongsyas_23 The problem is that games are optimized for consoles, so even if a PC is able to display much more complex graphics, no games will make use of that capability. PC users end up paying anything from 3-10 times the price of a 360 to play games that look only marginally sharper.

jcr8

@bongsyas_23 Fanboys? is that what you call people who don´t want to waste 3 months salary on some overpriced hardware that will be outdated in 3-4 years? Hope you have fun wasting your money on worthless junk.

@inaka_rob I buy my games for only 10 or 15 euros, thanks to steam <3  .I'll most likely buy Bioshock Infinite in a few months for the low,low price of only 15 euros.  Console games are stupidly overpriced, they all cost 80 euros here (thats around 100 Dolars).

Benefit gaming on a PC :

Better graphics

Modding

Better controlls

Cheapers games

Only downside is, you gotta upgrade your rig every 3 years but thats fine by me.

Bezoro

@inaka_rob

I bought Assassins Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations and Assassins Creed 3 a couple weeks back for less than 50 dollars on Steam.

What were you saying again?

Yes, we can't sell our games back, but the sales are so insane it doesn't matter.

slingblade00069

@inaka_rob You obviously are just a computer illiterate NOOB. What is your Virus Protector and all other programs that run in the background using. I'll give you 1 hint RAM u dummy. Crysis 3  is asking for 8 GIG on HIGH END PC SPECS. Having more RAM (24 or 32 GIGS) will not hurt and will ensure u don't have lag issues as well as other things.

@inaka_rob Maybe we do other things besides game on our PCs? Also, so what if games currently only use up to 8 gigs of ram? They'll start using more eventually, and ram is cheap as dirt. Why not go for 16 gigs when it'll cost like $20 more?

james_324
james_324

@inaka_rob What are you even saying? Hyperthreading is indeed used in games and my i7 2600k, coupled with task manager, can prove it! haha

@inaka_rob please don't call those people who put all that money into computers- Elite gamers. Lest yee be labelled as well.

@inaka_rob More games will use hyperthreading in the future so it's not a complete waste.
IIRC Farcry 3 uses it.

@DarksjeiK um... what. how is that. I am sitting here with my ipad, ipad, vita, ps3, and 360. I play games 8 hours a day. what train did I miss?

@DarksjeiK  Oh yeah and I suppose someone's not a movie fan either if they don't have an 80 inch hd tv too right?

VarHyid

@DarksjeiK So what's your definition of a "gamer" exactly? For many years I though that a gamer is someone who loves playing games and you're suggesting that that's incorrect if you love playing games on a console? Wow, I'm glad I've missed the train. Have a nice ride ;)

@jcr8 @bongsyas_23 Quit exaggerating...my 2 year old pc that cost me a grand has similar to slightly better specs than the still unreleased PS4.

lingo56
lingo56

@inaka_rob @DarksjeiK He said if you think the only option you have for simple and cheap gaming is only PS3 or Xbox then your wrong. I have lots of friends that enjoy PC gaming with rigs under 500 and even 300. Sure they can't max anything they want but they enjoy most of the benifits and can run games better then the current gen of consoles.

DarksjeiK
DarksjeiK

@inaka_rob @DarksjeiK

It's not about how many devices you have. I'm getting the feeling I may not have been clear in what I meant. Listen, this generation of consoles has lasted for far to long. This is now cxoming up to bite both MS and Sony in the ass. The graphical quality the PS4 and Durango are delivering is basically what any midrange $650 PC will do for you TODAY and it has been doing that for nearly 2 years offering far superior and generally more enjoyable experiences while at the same time offering a near identical use of comfort you get on a console.

lingo56
lingo56

@moviequest14 @DarksjeiK Not really cause the "Movie Fan" equilelient of this would be a 720p tv (They're much cheaper but work well) or a 1080p TV (Slightly more expensive but gives you more quallity and more to offer). Both sides are fair and have good points to back but if your going to want full quality and enjoy movies to the max you'll go with 1080p.

DarksjeiK
DarksjeiK

@moviequest14 @DarksjeiK

Bad example because an 80" tv would cost about 5 times what a midrange PC costs so I can see how that's not something that's available to everybody...at least not to me.

DarksjeiK
DarksjeiK

@VarHyid @DarksjeiK

"So what's your definition of a "gamer" exactly?"

Good question, what I mean is someone who is more involved in gaming than just a casual play every now and then. Someone who has gaming for a hobby. I'm not trying to come off elitist or whatever. I just noticed that a lot of people don't give PC gaming a glance because they think:

PC gaming is expensive, PC gaming is a hassle, PC games can't be played with a controller, PC gaming means having to upgrade every year etc etc etc..

All bs arguments that keep commited gamers from having the experience they deserve ! My brother got himself a Mac Book pro and tried some Steam versions of games and has now bought a PC because he realized what he'd been missing. In 2013, PC gaming is so user friendly it's basically a self-built console.

You can play all your favorite games in gorgeous HD and with ultrasmooth framerates which not only looks better but actually enhances the experience since you're taking in so much more detail. You really have no idea what a different experience games like Battlefield 3 are on even a midrange PC...

gotenks157
gotenks157

@james_324 I know, I also run servers on my pc as well. Minecraft, Plex, Splashtop etc. the 24GB give me enough buffer to not worry about any ram issues

slingblade00069
slingblade00069

@DarksjeiK@inaka_robYou better rethink that amount buddy. I did a friend a build for $600.00 under that as a matter of fact. Considered a mid to higher end pc. Your range (mid range $650 PC) I could build for $400.00 your just a tad out of date, probably by about 3 months.

slingblade00069
slingblade00069

@DarksjeiK@VarHyidThis is what the definition of a "gamer"is for PC or any Console to end any concern or argument. Debates that have been going on since Adm and Eve. Which is better a PC or a CONSOLE. If u just like playing games and don't care about Graphics and Frame-rate go buy a Console cause it will NEVER compare to a PC. If your a HARDCORE GAMER  you'll want to buy a PC. Difference is you'll be willing to update your PC when games start coming out that u can no longer play because of issues with let's say ((DX11, Requires Pixel Shader 4.0 - 5.0, ...etc....)) u all get my point. It's not like upgrading every 3 years is really needed if you do your own build and you know what your doing ((BUYING THE RIGHT PARTS)). Console gamers can just buy game put it in start it up play (EASY and CONVENIENT). PC HARDCORE gamers need to do a little more work that that and if you know what your doing, not going into detail on the subject then you'll get the extra rewards PC Gaming has over it's counterparts!!

lingo56
lingo56

@DarksjeiK @VarHyid Both PCs and Consoles have advantages. I PC game only because the games are dirt cheap if you just wait a few months :3. Except for Blizzard games.... ;/

VarHyid
VarHyid

@DarksjeiK @VarHyid Good point, but then - both views are wrong. Yes, thinking that PC gaming is super-expensive or you need updates or stuff crashes is wrong, but it's just as wrong as thinking that a console gamer can't be a passionate gaming fan. For me, gaming has been a hobby for over 20 years across many platforms (the old Atari, C64, Amiga500, PC, all the PlayStations + some "alternative' solutions) and yet I dont' play games on the PC.

Why, I hear you ask, well - for me the reason is ... exclusive games. Now, I know there may probably be ways to emulate consoles and somehow play these games on a PC, but it's simply more convenient to me to just get the console.

As each generation arrives, I wait maybe 1 year after it's there and just see what games come up for each platform and compare exclusives. Based on that I've chosen the PS3 last time, but just based on that. If this gen I find more Xbox exclusive suiting my preferences - I'll go for it, if I'll find great PC games, I may get them, but the platform has no influence on my love for gaming and frankly, I don't feel like I'm missing something - I want fun, I get fun.

Of course I won't even mention graphics because I think everyone knows that of course they're better on a PC and always will be, but then - I can honestly say that I've never found myself playing a game and then looking at graphical details.... mostly. And if I did, then I think there's more wrong with the game than just graphics - if it's a great immersive game, I don't think of visuals, I'm just having fun and isn't it all about just this - fun? :)
