BioShock Infinite VP leaving Irrational Games

Former Gears of War producer Rod Fergusson leaves Boston-area studio after helping finish latest BioShock game.

If Irrational Games' next project is a follow-up to BioShock Infinite, executive vice president of development Rod Fergusson will not be around to help. The former Gears of War producer confirmed to Polygon today that he is leaving the Boston-area developer.

Fergusson joined Irrational Games in August, leaving Epic Games after seven years to serve as a "closer" on BioShock Infinite. With that job finished, the developer is planning to move on, though he said he's not sure where he will go or what he will do next.

"I am very proud of the work that I did and of the team and what they were able to accomplish on Infinite," Fergusson said in an email. "Now with the game shipped successfully, I've done what I set out to do here and now I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my life and career."

In all, Fergusson spent nine months at Irrational Games and leaves just weeks after BioShock Infinite released to critical acclaim.

Time to leave a great place; a place I called home: Epic. Here, I come Irrational. Aw, one game down, I'm done.

Why are games today trying to demonize the founding fathers? George Washington got mad when we the people asked him to be a king. Also, he was one of the first of the founding fathers to emancipate his slaves.

I'm new to the Bioshock series,Can i just jump right straight to infinite or do the previous ones help at better grasping the plot of the universe?

Was it him that freaked out and wanted to rage quit before over the offensive take on religion? Honestly, if it was him, I saw that guy quitting first chance he got :p

I agree leave bioshock alone after this game and the DLC. End on a high note so its forever remembered at its best.

Am I the only one that thinks Bioshock Infinite although awesome, wasn't the best from the series?

abcdefgabcdefgz

Yeah bioshock infinite is as good as the hype. The whole game is just expertly done with one of the most realized worlds in a long time. Its just memorable and fun with tons of attention to details.

Bioshock 1 was an amazing game for its time as well, but I just take each as unique and not compare them

I love the idea of it, but there's no way I'm paying $10 bucks. Will wait for a sale.

Congrats on another amazing game, Rod. I hope we see more from you soon as you help create some great AAA expereinces. Maybe go to Ubisoft and help them re-create Assassin's Creed?

Thats a shame Bioshock Infinite is quite possibly the best game of this gen it is astounding, not that i need to tell anyone that, everyone knows it.

@ffspyda Actually I think that's a good thing the First Two in my opinion were better Story-Wise and Immersive game-play that made me not want to put the controller down, other than that two totally different games that are completely amazing in every aspect, Except Bioshock 2 was not created by Irrational like the first Bioshock or Infinite.... Have Fun

AlienMinator
AlienMinator

@ffspyda You don't need the first or second game to play this one. Story line here does not follow on from the first two games although you do get a very, very brief glimpse of one of the first two games near the end of Infinite. However the first two game are worth playing but do so in order.

@ffspyda You want miss anything BUT you should still play both of them. It's ok, I'm sure after you play this one you'll want to find out why the first one was better =).

@ffspyda Both are two very different Stories you really wont miss anything.

@wexorian  Unfortunatly due to the ending of Infinite, a new Bioshock will feel pretty obsolete, to me personally. It even made Bioshock 1 less powerful

DarkSaber2k
DarkSaber2k

@wexorian Bioshock has already been in space. It was called System Shock and unless they are going to make it a System Shock game it shouldn't go into space.

Rennar

@telaros What offensive take on religion? The game basically said "insane radicals are bad" and that's about it...

shingui5
shingui5

@VarietyMage i'm pretty sure there won't be a System Shock game, for a long long time, since the ownership of the licence is in some crazy limbo.

Btw, Bioshock isn't a prequel, it's a spiritual successor.

@abcdefgabcdefgz With the ending that explain the concept of Bioshock series so throughly, I doubt Irrational would ever make another Bioshock game. Well, if Chris Nolan is interested, Irrational shuould totally develop an Inception game, Theif style mixed with the chaos level from Dishonored.

Shin_Gallon
Shin_Gallon

@abcdefgabcdefgz The whole game except that godawful auto-save system that ruined the game, you mean. I've still only played the game for like an hour because the lack of manual saving ruins how I play Bioshock (plus, the auto-saves are glitchy as hell).

andmcq
andmcq

@abcdefgabcdefgz No. It's a generic corridor shooter with average AI, the usual gameplay mechanics and a good story.

@holtrocks

My personal fav was Dark Souls. Oh and my fav arcade was Braid. But Infinite is up there for sure. On the whole this gen of games has been a disappointment to me. Most games are far too short, generic and obsessed with multi-player. The majority of games I've truly been impressed with have been arcade games tbh. The Unfinished Swan, Journey, Limbo, Flow, Bastion. There's more creativity in that short list than the entirety of the PS3/360's retail game library,

So it's great to see a genuinely good game like Bioshock getting the credit it deserves. Wish the same could be said for one or two others, such as Rayman Origins.

ffspyda
ffspyda

@ExtremePhobia @ffspyda so in terms of chronology, which events take place first, i mean does infinite precede the original bioshock?

telaros
telaros

@Rennar @telaros Not my words dude, but a Gamespot interview about some part of the game being 'too much' for one of their crew members that wanted to rage quit that same day.

Heck if I remember which guy it was. Sure as heck didn't say the game to me was offensive :p

@shingui5 @VarietyMage Successors aren't born earlier than the parent.  This is a prequel trilogy, and I want the true successor to System Shock, which will be System Shock 3.

It was a rhetorical question. Stop with the stupid answers.

@andmcq @abcdefgabcdefgz Having played FPS for over 15 years I'd say it was anything but generic. Is it %100 original? No but it blends many different elements into the combat that make it refreshing and easy to do. It's very simple to enter a room, possess an enemy, open a tear summoning more help, jump on a skyrail, switch vigor and zap another enemy, drop execute another and then fire your FIRST SHOT.

@ffspyda @ExtremePhobia Infinite takes place in 1914, I believe and out of the top of mij head i believe Bioshock 1 is 1960, but that doesn't rly matter. The two stories have pretty much nothing to do, like Chimpimpukas said, there is no continuity. You can easily do without it. But Bioshock 1 is a fantastic game that I personally though was more fleshed out than Infinite, so you should play it if you're interested in Bioshock

Chimpimpukas
Chimpimpukas

@ffspyda @ExtremePhobia  there is no continuity

leviathanwing

@PSBEATSALLDEAL @Alf that was hardly rhetorical... perhaps you dont understand the concept at all.  rhetorical would be like asking if the 3rd godfather movie was the worse one... now thats rhetorical.

@leviathanwing @Daemoroth @jhcho2 @andmcq @abcdefgabcdefgz  Maybe you should try DMC then.

leviathanwing
leviathanwing

@Daemoroth @jhcho2 @andmcq @abcdefgabcdefgz i want my fps like i want my 7 wheeled 13 doored, 15 cupholdered car... not at all like a vehicle... and hence not at all like an fps... how about an fps where im in 3rd person and wielding a sword?

Daemoroth
Daemoroth

@jhcho2 @andmcq @abcdefgabcdefgz How many cars are non-generic? They all have 4 wheels, a roof, an engine shoved in somewhere...

Doesn't mean there aren't unique designs and exquisite cars out there (Even though they're still cars - creating a unique design doesn't mean you throw the basics out the window).

@faizanhd @Shingetsu I lost my voice playing that game. So many screams and curses. But I loved it. I wish I could play it on the PS3. Oh well.
