Biggest announcements from the VGX 2013 video game awards

Here are the biggest trailers, announcements, and awards from the VGX video game awards.

This year’s VGX touted more world-premiers than any show previous, and in that sense it didn’t disappoint (though Twitter had its fair share of criticism). Here’s a rundown of everything we saw at the show:

Award Winners

  • Best DLC: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
  • Best Voice Actor: Troy Baker as Joel (Last of Us)
  • Best Voice Actress: Ashley Johnson as Ellie (Last of Us)
  • Studio of the Year: Naughty Dog
  • Character of the year: The Lutece Twins (BioShock Infinite)
  • Best soundtrack: GTAV
  • Best Song in a game: "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" (BioShock Infinite)

"Best PC game: Gone Home" Ahh what? a mediocre written story about a lesbian is all it takes to get best game? Other games did the same exploration aspect better and with a more interesting story that a poorly written teen fiction about lesbians. Sorry but that game does not deserve to win and it only did because of the story subject.

Guys keep in mind, Game of the Year =/= Best Game of the Year. GOTY just means, the "loudest" game of the year, the one that made the biggest bang. You can't deny giving GTA V that award whether you liked it or not.

"Best Voice Actress: Ashley Johnson as Ellie (Last of Us)"  - all I heard from her during a playthrough (outside of cut scenes which were meh) was "oh shit, oh shit" and "fuck" ... best voice actress my ass ... Elizabeth from Bioshock had fewer lines and still sounded better :P

What a Game of Thrones game that doesn't belong in the trash bin? Also, Brother A Tale of Two sons should have won best PC game and best Indie too.

The last of us was actually better than GTA V in my honest opinion.

The last of us was prob the most fun I've had in a game in a long long time. I'd have to say it's the best game of the generation. As well as best looking. GTA V was just more GTA. Bio shock infinite was excellent but naughty dog def raised the bar on graphics and story this gen. There's just no argument there.

GTA V is good but it doesn't deserve GOTY, just as it doesn't deserve best soundtrack award

Driving- Forza Motorsport 5 is not great, many better PC racers out there

Ass Creed seems to have gotten award just because its first of its kind on this gen, not a bad game but lucky there is no more games in the genre yet

i can see the trend already... rereleasing the PC version of games on consoles because consoles can now handle the graphics....

not next gen. try harder to impress me guys...

There are some curious inconsistencies here - if GTAV isn't the best game on the PS3, where it lost to The Last of US, isn't the best game on the Xbox 360, where it lost to Brothers:  A Tale of Two Sons, and isn't the best action adventure game, where it lost to Assassin's Creed IV, how is it better than all of those games as overall GOTY?

I get that they want to spread the awards around a bit and not give one game a half dozen awards, so they gave the individual category and platform awards to other games as a kind of consolation prize, but it still seems logically inconsistent.

That said, there is one here that really made me smile.  Bioshock Infinite made fantastic use of diagetic music, with "God Only Knows" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" being the standouts.  They not only fit nicely with the plot element regarding tears in reality allowing things like music to come through, but also work really well thematically in how they tie in with events occurring on screen and support the themes the game is exploring.  It's a shame this wasn't recognized.

That the best use of diagetic music was recognized for the great moment it created almost makes up for this.  Elizabeth and Booker improvising a thirty-second verse of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" was one of my favorite moments in gaming from this year.  It works because it's beautiful, because it fits perfectly into the story at that point and shows the audience a moment of the two protagonists becoming closer (classic "show, don't tell"), and when you hit the ending, the relevance to the plot and themes just reinforces how well that brief scene works.

Saying that something "works on many levels" is a cliche, but it's a perfect description of that moment in Bioshock Infinite.

Titanfall anticipated game of the year ?

Come on Watch Dogs or the Witcher 3 : wild hunt are much more anticipated then that.

Still can't believe that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was nominated for and won "Best DLC".  As someone who neither owns nor has played Far Cry 3 but DOES own Blood Dragon, I can say with certainty that Blood Dragon is a standalone title, NOT downloadable content for an existing game.  Yes, it's built with many of the same assets, and it's a fantastic game in its own right, but to put it in the DLC category not only results in it being a full-fledged game pitted against other DLC's that are arguably more deserving of the award (I would've voted for BL2's Assault On Dragon Keep), but also discounts the fact that Blood Dragon's $15 price tag is an incredible value considering that you don't have to have any previous titles in the series to play it.

The Last of Us over GTA:V if you ask me, it's both more innovative and engaging.

The RPG selection was MIGHTY weak this year.  Luckily, 4X games came roaring back.

Bioshock Infinite probably should have been considered for PC game of the year. Heck, even the Stanley Parable craps all over Gone Home. Gone Home isn't a bad game, but its no award winner.

Hey now those games did not have a mediocre teenage angst plot about lesbians. We have to show how PC and progressive we are.

@WolfgarTheQuiet  This list just kinda nodded to all the popular things to talk about there was. Anything that was worthy of mention this year had some part to play in their list.  Maybe I'm just not interested in this kind of list in videogames.

@LordCrash88 it was too short

if they would really do a playable demo or show something 10 mintues long it would take over gamespot

WolfgarTheQuiet

@Geminon who cares about them, existing games look great, do we really need better Graphics then lets say Crysis games, they look amazing, time to concentrate on more content and game mechanics, and stop milking people with DLC that would be in the full game in any normal situation, but what can you do, people will pay for shit it seems

CalamityKait
CalamityKait

Agreed on all points.

Putting a dowloadable full game into a catagory clearly intended for add-ons is misplacing it.  I haven't played Knife of Dunwall, but Citadel and Assault on Dragon Keep were both wonderful in how they combined story and gameplay.

@ThePowerOfHAT Downloadable content... The hints in the name. Its a download-only game, therefore its fine to call it DLC. Standalone or not.

@sherylroycer You do know that GTA5 was released on the PS3 as well? Right?  Not for nothing, but if The Last of Us had been released on every console, THAT game would have gotten the honors of game of the year. Unfortunately, it has to be a game that has to able to be enjoyed by those with a ps3 and a 360 and Last of Us doesn't qualify, unfortunately. While GTA5 is fun and all, it doesn't hold a candle to TLoU, a fact you would know if you were not a Xboner. What's up with being a fanboy anyway? Get both systems, enjoy all the games and everyone comes out a winner. Fanboism is completely stupid. My loyalty lies with playing great games, not with choosing one console over another in order to show how narrow minded I am. Stupid.

@sherylroycer GTA was pretty good, unfortunately it wasn't the earth shattering game we all expected it will be.
Maybe you just haven't squeezed all the hype residue out of your system yet.

It won because of the teenage angst story about lesbians.

@bradaz85 Sorry bradaz85 but you're wrong.  By your own argument, the hint is in the name.  You forgot the word "content".  There is a reason it is not called "Downloadable game".  Content entails assets like new models, levels, textures, story, audio, etc.  Hence DLC is an expansion to a pre-existing game.  What's the difference?  "Content" is missing the GAME ENGINE!  DLC needs to be paired with a game engine.  If you include the game engine, then it is a fully fledged game.

TL;DR You're wrong.

Witcher 3 should be epic. No cross-generation restrictions.
