Big in Japan Sept. 20-26: Yakuza PSP

Pokemon Black and White repeat as chart champs, but Sega's first handheld installment in organized crime action series comes in a solid second.

by

In its first week on sale in Japan, the one-two punch of Pokemon Black and White sold a combined 2.6 million copies. The games sold considerably less in their second week, but still easily topped Media Create's Japanese sales charts for September 20-26 with 828,580 copies sold.

Yakuza's PSP debut pummeled most of the competition but couldn't top Pokemon.

Running a distant but still strong second with 174,213 sold was Sega's first PSP entry in the Yakuza series, Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou. The PSP action adventure game focuses on an up-and-coming fighter in the Japanese organized crime scene named Tatsuya Ukyo and features the series' standard mix of combat with assorted minigames like bowling and karaoke.

No other game on the charts even approached the 50,000-sold threshold for the week, with Nintendo's latest minigame collection Wii Party landing in third place with 43,077 sold. A number of familiar titles showed staying power on the chart, with Capcom's Monster Hunter spin-off MonHun Nikki taking fifth place with 18,652 sold and Square Enix's Front Mission Evolved holding onto seventh place with 14,339 sold.

On the hardware charts, the DSi continued to ride the Pokemon wave, coming in first for the second straight week with 49,411 units sold. However, the PSP overtook the DSi LL (known as the DSi XL in the West) for second place with 37,576 sold; Nintendo's supersized portable slipped to third with 32,777 sold. The PS3 was the best-selling console overall, with its 20,694 systems sold putting it fourth on the hardware charts, ahead of the Wii and its 16,908 sold.

Man, I don't blame them for not buying the PSP Go. ONLY downloadable content? That's a NO.

I LOVE Pokemon the way it is and yes, they could change somethings but just because fans ask for something doesn't mean they'll do it. Only because of all things I've seen people ask for in a game the things people ask for in Pokemon is by far the most absurd. I like Pokemon and I'll the makers decide where to go with it.

i bet Pokemon will still top the chart next week. right now black and white have sold 3.4 million copies and are the 16th best selling ds game.another 800,000 and they will be 15th. i think before they come to the U.S and everywhere else, their going to reach 7 million. hopefully the U.S can beat 2.6 million first week sales. I'm hopeful these will become the best selling ds games of all time.

I bet the devs of this Yakuza game were Pride FC fans.

I wonder WHY ? Wii don't have any Pokemon gold (RPG) or Silver or Fire Red or Black and White. Wii need Pokemon (RPG) for the Wii!! Also it will be awesome to play Zelda Phantom or Spirit Tracks on Wii. Why??? All this superp games only on DS. DS - number 1 portable console. But Wii needs this games more than DS.

Who cares? Most of those games are completely off. Hope those lazy bastards bring Yakuza PSP to the West at some point, though.
