Big in Japan Nov. 7-13: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend

New entry in Sega's rhythm game and Sengoku Basara offshoot occupy top spots of sales chart; 3DS again tops hardware sales with room to spare.

Just like in North America and Europe, Japan has experienced a huge surge of new releases within the past few weeks. That surge is still continuing, thanks to two recent releases during the week of November 7 to November 13.

Games about funky-haired digital idols were last week's top sellers.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva sold 184,673 units and was the top-selling title on the Media Creates chart. The rhythm title puts gamers in the shoes of virtual diva Hatsune Miku as they have to press inputs to match the rhythm of a track. This version of the game features nine new songs and 28 returning tracks from past Project Diva titles.

The other new PSP title on the list was the rerelease of Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke (translated into English as "Over My Dead Body"). The game is about a cursed hero who has to raise children to defeat a powerful demon. The role-playing game sold 94,085 units in its debut week. Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D Land and Final Fantasy Type-0 were still hanging around the charts; the former sold 93,441 units while the latter sold 57,091 units last week.

Offsetting the handheld software dominance in the top five slots was Sengoku Basara 3 Utage for the PlayStation 3. A lighthearted take on Capcom's Sengoku Basara series of hack-and-slash action games, the title features a story mode focused on former non-playable characters in the franchise and new Country Unification and Japan Sports modes. The PS3 version sold 124,197 units, while the Wii version sold 50,747 units.

Other notable releases include Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition for the PS3, which sold 39,743 units, and the PS3 version of Battlefield 3, which was still clinging on the chart with 142,171 units sold.

Even with all of the PSP games on the top 10 spots of the chart, the 3DS still reigned supreme on the hardware sales side. Nintendo sold 103,962 units of the 3DS for the week, while Sony sold 23,472 units of the PSP. For the non-portable side, Sony sold 22,919 units of the PS3, while Nintendo sold 11,782 Wii systems.

@foxracer2d2 Japan a 3rd world nation??? What are you on? Sudan, Kenia, Indonesia, Iraq etc. are 3rd world nations. USA, Japan, Canada are 1st world nations. And battlefield in Japan isn't popular because it's a first person shooter. And Japan doesn't like 1st person shooters. The game is dubbed in Japanese and Japanese people LOVE speaking English. It's cool to know English. I was at an after party with a Japanese band and the drummer was talking about how he got a high score on the TOEFL test and everyone was like...wow! That's so cool! In Japam, if you can speak good English, most people are jealous of you.

@Eternal_Phoenix An English version? HYES! Now is that in Europe too or just America?

The only reason I had ever considered buying a PSP is to play Project Diva, and the sales numbers show why! @DARKNESSxEAGLE Project Diva would sell outside of japan, Miku might not be know by ALL people, but she does have a very large fan base outside japan, the fact that she is getting an English version soon proves it...

@beny_pimpster thats because most of them don't know english. Also, they don't need to, because japan is like a 3rd world country like US. Why would they even be dreaming to live in the US if they had a highly developed country like theirs.

@Oldboy08 just wondering, since vita will be out there in Japan this december are you going to get one at launch?

A 3ds project diva released outside of japan would be nice. But it wouldn't sell well elsewhere so we all know that's never going to happen.

@Oldboy08 I wasn't entirely sure if they were available there yet to be honest. I figured since Battlefield 3 was already available there, that they might have been also. I didn't know Battlefield 3 didn't just come out there also, so sorry for that. But I imagine when Skyrim and Batman do release over there, they still won't have amazing sales. I'm actually surprised Battlefield 3 is so popular over there, I wonder why that is. Maybe you have a better idea why since you live there. I wonder why it is that some games can coincide with international release dates, or come pretty close, but others take a year or longer to get translated.

@josephl64 Yeah I do. We Americans, as well as other people outside of Japan, do play Japanese games. I play Fire Emblem, I've played several of the most obscure and quirky Japanese games on the PS2. Final Fantasy and Resident Evil, among many other game series, have ranked high on American sales lists before. So don't give me that. The Japanese just shrug off most games that aren't made there.

Yeah,Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world IIRC.

@Ovirew Batman and Skyrim are not available in Japan yet...neither is MW3. Lots of games get released very late over here in Japan. Also, BF3 sold over 130,000 copies last week. @lorddaggeroff Japanese people are becoming extinct...wtf...? I live in Tokyo, it sure doesn't seem like they are anywhere close to becoming 'extinct' There are a lot more Japanese people in this world than there are of other races...I see literally thousands of young people everyday. Sure it's lower than it used to be (the birth rate) but Japanese people aren't going anywhere any time soon.

If only we western Japanese Otaku gamers got our version of Miku Hatsune instead of being forced to import it all the time from Japan. Well at least we are able to import games on the PSP and PS3. Would have liked to have played the english translated version so I could navigate though the menu better to see all the hidden stuff of the game.

@beny_pimpster They are smart to buy BF3 instead of MW3.

@Ovirew and you don't think about the reverse of it...

The Japanese have very closed-minded gaming tastes. We have people praising big games like Skyrim and Batman Arkham City right now, but they won't ever make it very high on the sales lists there. Battlefield 3 only made a fraction of what the top four games made.

Oldboy08
Oldboy08

Good numbers, I think most of you don't know this about Japanese gaming, the games over here are way more expensive than in NA and YOU CAN NOT RENT GAMES. Being a gamer in Japan is an expensive ordeal. Nice to see BF3 still on the list. Been playing this online a lot and even though it's Japan there are no shortages of rooms to play in! Lots of great FPS gamers over here.

No saint row 3 in site oh well . But look like psp rules again with a new game and ps3 game at 2nd and 3rd psp game again.
