Big in Japan Nov. 28 - Dec. 4: Mario Kart 7

Nintendo's latest racer beats robots and Italian assassins for top spot; 3DS unit sales double since week of Nov. 21.

It was a Nintendo-filled week for Japan in terms of game sales, with big names like Mario and Zelda in the top 10 for the week of November 28 to December 4 on the latest Media Create sales update. Mario Kart 7 raced its way to first place with 423,619 units sold, relegating Kidou Senshi Gundam: Extreme VS. to second place. A PlayStation 3 port of the arcade 3D fighter, the Gundam game sold 349,756 units in its first week of release.

It's a-me, at pole position in Japan!

Assassin's Creed: Revelations also made its chart debut this week, coming in at fourth place with 39,947 units sold. Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS went up to third place with 73,907 units sold, while The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii went down from first to fifth place with 32,191 units sold. The PS3 version of the arcade fighting title The King of Fighters XIII made its debut at 10th place with 21,525 units sold.

Meanwhile, on the hardware front, the 3DS saw a huge boost in sales thanks in part to the recently released Mario Kart title and Super Mario 3D Land. Nintendo sold 205,962 units for the week, which was close to double the sales of the system for the previous week. Sony sold 40,668 units of the PS3, which was good enough for second on the charts, just ahead of the PSP's 39,547 units sold.

In related news, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said on Nikkei that the 3DS will soon reach the 3 million sales mark thanks to the recent price drop and major releases like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. He also said that he expects the system to sell 4 million units before its one-year anniversary in February.

Bet Gamespot feels stupid for calling the 3DS the 3 Dead System, lol. Eat your words Gamespot. PS2 is still in the race? That console will never die.

I can't believe anyone thought the 3DS was doomed to begin with. It was overpriced and it had no software. Both of those issues have been remedied. Now it is in kill mode and it isn't even over for the winter because they have another huge hit to release in Japan. Monster Hunter Tri-G is going to drop in a few days and that will sell about half a million copies on day 1 easy and maybe even more systems than this week because of the custom Monster Hunter Tri G HW bundle.
