Big in Japan Nov. 1-7: God Eater: Burst

Namco Bandai's monster-hunting PSP title maintains chart-topping appetite, while Western RPG Fallout: New Vegas scores on both 360 and PS3.

Japanese gamers continue to gorge themselves on God Eater: Burst. For the second week in a row, Namco Bandai's monster-hunter action game on the PSP has taken top billing on Media Create's software sales charts for Japan, adding 61,834 more units to its quarter-million week-one tally.

Fallout: New Vegas hit the jackpot in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Perhaps more impressive is the debut of Bethesda Softworks and Obsidian Entertainment's Western role-playing game Fallout: New Vegas. During its first week on the Japanese market, New Vegas sold 37,249 units on the PlayStation 3 and 24,146 copies on the Xbox 360, securing it a double-dipping fourth- and sixth-place finish. The week's other new debut, Radiant Historia on the DS, slipped in between the pair at fifth with 32,807 units sold.

Nintendo dominated much of the remainder of the chart. Super Mario All-Stars gained a spot week-over-week to secure a second place finish, followed by less than 1,000 units by Pokemon Black and White in third. Kirby's Epic Yarn, Wii Party, and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn rounded out the bottom of the chart in eighth, ninth, and 10th.

While Nintendo ruled software, Sony maintained its position atop the hardware charts. The PSP and the PlayStation 3 were the best-selling machines in their respective categories during the week, with Sony's handheld selling 34,538 units and its console shifting 23,524 units. The DSi twins followed, combining to sell nearly 40,000 systems, while the Wii managed to add just 11,521 more units to its lifetime-to-date numbers. The PSP Go, DS Lite, and Xbox 360 were separated by less than 250 units.

@Treflis That is exactly it. Kids all the way up to adults spend a ton of time commuting to and from school and work. they have zero time to sit down at a console. cant really do homework on a subway either. could you imagine having your math homework spread across 3 laps. The AVERAGE Tokyoite spends 2 hours a day!!!! sitting on a subway. If it wasn't for the tokyo subway, we probably would not even have the original gameboy.

The really sad thing is they get a GREAT made in USA game and it is riddle with bugs. I am talking about Vegas. The west needs to win over Japan, because they still think Japanese games are way better and American games are doo doo. When in reality its the other way around, but then they actully buy an American made game and it looks like we haven't even learned how to program or test our games before we launch them. the sadder thing yet. Vegas is using a game engine that was used for Oblivion and Fallout 3. You would think by the 3rd time they would have less bugs not more. I am glad a patch is coming out.

PSP is doing good, but the DS is still selling more, combine the sales of each and the DS sales more: PSP + PSP Go = 37,456 DSi LL + DSi + DS Lite = 41,662 i just thougth i mentioned it in case someone didnt realize it

Doesn't surprise me that the PSP is doing so good in Japan, considering their days are rather stressful and for the most part they are only at home in the late evenings and nights. Added with the fact that most use public transportation and that this is where they get a chance to stress down a little, then I would Imagine picking up the PSP from their backpack, pockets or breifcase and play while enroute to their destination is fairly common. I am surprised to see Fallout New Vegas doing so well in Japan though, it's a positive thing of course as usually western games aren't exactly entirely welcomed with open arms.

Nice to see the PSP doing well. It's a great console, easily one of the best handhelds made. The Go is doing too well for my tastes though, even one sale of that thing is one too many. Also surprised to see that Japan like Fallout.

Man Japan loves their PSPs. I used to have one then lost it. The worst part of that is that is that I had games I never got to play. I have been itching to play Half minute hero since I lost it. I wonder how much they go for used right now...

I have to admit that's rather impressive numbers for both PSP and PS3, and I'm not talking sales numbers...i mean the 1 + 2. Besides, how many people besides me don't already own a Nintendo handheld? The numbers were guaranteed to fall eventually.

Wii deserves to be outsold, it needs a price cut everywhere. Nintendo is so greedy this generation, more than Kotick of Activision. That's very low for a prestigious company

@mariomaster16 Its because of people like them that make me ashamed to be an American. Talking down an entire culture or race just because of games is utterly ridiculous...Im glad someone agrees with me...Thank You!

@InstantKlassick: just read your two response to those guys that were being ignorant. all I can say is "lol." It's almost pathetic what some people post on here, that 360gamer guy was being kind of racist earlier. Can't help but laugh at people that make themselves look bad like that. @EasyNormalHard: Sales in Japan, where most games are released first, are a pretty good indicator as to how games will sale stateside, or in Europe. Games that are popular there are also more likely to be translated and released in the US. For people that are genuinely interested in the gaming industry this article is actually relevant.

InstantKlassick

@EasyNormalHard You say "who cares about whats happening in Japan" but clearly all of your games in ur tracked list are either 3DS or Wii. Can we say Irony?

Cool, Fallout: New Vegas in infinitely better than just about any RPG Japan has produced in the last 3-4 years. Maybe they will finally start making good RPGs soon. It also reminds me, i need to stop playing fallout 3 and upgrade to New Vegas.

Eh, I think Tom forgot about the existence of World Soccer Winning 11 2011 and decided to just move Fallout and Radiant Historia up a space in his write up. The same mistake showing three times. Keep up the good work, sir. :P

@mariomaster16 Impressive because it is an American FPS selling well in Japan and impressive because the combined PS3/360 sales of 61,000 would make it number 2 after God Eater's 61,834. Japanese generally hate FPS but if it's also an RPG it seems they'll take it.

mariomaster16
mariomaster16

bahahaha, does anyone else see the irony? God Eater burst is still number one, selling over 250,000 copies in one week, but what's more impressive is New Vegas sold 37,000 on one system and 24,000 on the other; making a grand total of 61,000 copies, less than a fourth of how many Bust sold. How is selling less than a fourth "impressive?" (Not bashing New Vegas, just laughing at poor word choice.) In other new, why is it the extended version has already come out over there, and we haven't even gotten the original here in the states? Come on Namco, hurry it up will ya?
PSP outsold the Wii? PSP GO outsold the 360? The PS3 outsold everything?
You don'te usually check the Japanese Sales do you? It's usually always like this... PSP in first place (if you dont sum all the DSs), the PSPGo, Xbox and PS2 all fighting for the last place... although I must say I don't remember ever seeing the DS lite after the PSP Go...must be because of the price cut! LOL Xbox360Gamer15...you're such a failure.

@exedeath I think you nailed this one man. just check out his profile. Waaaa, my favorite system sucks in another country. Waaaaa, nobody wants to play Halo co-op with me. Jeez. And the comment about hating japanese is borderline xenophobic at least, but I bet he doesn't even know what that means.

Xbox360Gamer15 Look at this guy and his post. This is a perfect example of a troll. He stepped away from COD for a couple minutes to post about the only system his parents could afford to buy him. I bet it was used, and they had to go 2 days without dominos pizza. It probably took him forever to post this considering they can only afford dial up. AM I right there xbox360gamer15. Are you telling me there are 14 other people that have xbox360gamer as a name, or that it is fact your age and don't know any better?

The xbox 360 console should of sold the most also...i hate the japanese

Xbox360Gamer15
Xbox360Gamer15

the 360 version of new vegas should of sold so many that its number one on the list...the ps3 version is lame and all the other games suck.

tom_110584

the wii's sales are really falling away huh? it's amazing that the ps3 is selling almost double the wii. i think it's a case of most families who can afford the wii have already got one...

Looks like New Vegas helped move some units for the 360, but I'm shocked that PspGo isn't dead last like it usually is. This must be prove that the world will end in 2012.
