Big in Japan May 16-22: Akiba's Trip

Square Enix RPG gets bronze medal thanks to strip-happy action title and 3D-enhanced fighting game.

The long-running king of the Japanese charts has finally been dethroned by two new kids on the block. According to this week's sales chart on Media Create, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional is now at third place with 19,290 units sold, with the top two slots occupied by Akiba's Trip for the PSP and Dead or Alive: Dimensions for the 3DS.

The first-placed title is an action game where the main character is given the task to protect the Japanese electronics hub known as Akihabara against a rising vampire threat. Players will have to master the art of stripping their opponents down to their skivvies and exposing their bodies to sunlight. Akiba's Trip has sold 58,150 units within its debut week.

Probably the only safe-for-work picture from Akiba's Trip we can use.

Fighting game fans need no introduction to the Dead or Alive series. The 3D fighting game, which now features stereoscopic 3D in this portable rendition, has sold 23,078 units. Another newcomer on the list makes an appearance: the PSP role-playing game Gungnir has sold 16,355 units and is now residing at fourth place. This tactical RPG was developed by the team behind Yggdra Union and features a tactical gauge system, which allows players to change the battle turn order.

Other surprises on the list include Portal 2, debuting in Japan at sixth place with a respectable 8,942 units sold and the sudden drop of the two Haruhi Suzumiya titles. The PSP version of Reminiscences of Haruhi Suzumiya has dropped from fourth to 14th place with 3,758 units sold, while the PlayStation 3 version went from second to 17th place with 3,529 units sold.

On the hardware side of things, the PSP are 3DS are still the top-selling consoles in Japan, though the numbers aren't as big as in the past few weeks. The PSP has sold 30,463 units while the 3DS has sold 17,240 units.

@Megavideogamer that would probably be the case if only the 3DS had any good games... I think after summer once they finally start releasing good game the 3DS will start selling much more. It was a mistake from nintendo to release the 3DS so soon i love my 3DS but the only game i think is worth buying is Street fighter but that game isn't good enough to play for months.I played for around 2 weeks and since then my 3DS is only good to accumulate dust waiting for another game. And right now i seriously can't suggest anyone to go buy a 3DS i would say to anyone to stick with the DS until around holiday time and then buy the 3DS.

@mariokart64fan I am? There you go spouting nonsense again. I KNOW Mario Kart will sell in big numbers but I said Japan doesn't have all the time in the world to wait for one good title. Zelda won't do squat regardless of what you think and the and the other franchises don't exactly sell in big numbers. Do you even know the Japanese market at all? The original DS struggled in the beginning because it was something different in handheld gaming while 3DS is the successor to the best selling handheld of all time...

corrupt gamer , your embarassing your self , how about mariokart zelda paper mario starfox resident evil the 2 of them , driver renegade ya like i said just like ds ,, i guess no body here remembers it struggled in the same exact way until 2005 ,-which was 6 months in , and the 3ds will repeat , japan knows whats up ,right now , and they are just waiting like most of the people in the us , for the games , look at ds in 2004 and compare it to ds now!

iand , its got good games ds and wii 3ds has some its just to much for what little it has , but ya when you add ds and 3ds they sold nearly as much as sony did , missed by 3 thousand units, but still impressive when you consider all factors just imagine whats gonna happen when 3ds finally hits its stride

PSP on the top of the chart. (in Japan) but still over 3DS, PS3, DS series, and the Wii. PS2 still selling in 2011. I really thought the 3DS would have crushed everything by this point.

Akiba's strip is no.1 in japan? I guess SEX sells well in japan. DEAD OR ALIVE NO. 2, I hope this increases the chances of a new DOA for home come to be. PSP GO sold 65? Sony still supports it?

Gotta love the Japanese. It took a game about panty shots and stripping maids (based on the Google search images at least) and a game about fighting women (thats what you come for, face it) with their *Ahem* 3D talents to take down Monster Hunter after weeks. Well, at least we'll probably get the second one eventually.

Gungnir looks awesome. Hope that gets localized.

@mariokart64fan Embarrassing yourself as usual I see. WHEN is 3DS going to get some good games? The first and last good one was Professor Layton and I don't think Japan can wait a millennium for Mario Kart when PSP churns out much better games for nearly half the price. Combining sales of both DS + 3DS just makes me laugh as Nintendo fanboys like yourself claimed it would be the final nail in PSP's coffin. PSP Go has been discontinued a month ago so of course it would beyond pitiful sales. You think Project Cafe will set the console market on fire in Japan? If anything, it'll only INCREASE PS3 sales just like precious 3DS is doing for PSP.

That's a nice little gap between psp and 3ds.

wow currupt is suprised really , are you kidding me ,, 3ds is going to sell alot more once games are on the unit ,, its not a matter of if but when , , this is not a psp go , and this most certainly isnt a vb by any means , and nintendo still sold nearly as much handhelds if we included ds and 3ds all together so whats your point ,, people are still buying nintendo handhelds more then psp lol and wow psp go 65 thats an all time low and the home console market in japan is fading and fading fast lol i dont think japan can wait til 2014 for new hardware thankgod wii 2 is coming next year lol itll help the console market over there big time

Akiba's Trip FTW Oh... and 3DS FINALLY passed the 1M mark. I guess miracles can happen while getting steamrolled by PSP at the same time.

I think I'd like to play the Japanese version of Portal 2 just to see how the humor was translated...

zzamaro

It seems Portal 2 is not big in Japan. Can't blame them, even if it's a top-quality game and much better than any of the FPS games out there, it's still a FPS game for Japanese people.

mario-nin-freak Posted May 27, 2011 9:31 pm SST They must really market the PSP really well in Japan! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- shouldn't we the non-japanese follow their good example?

mariostar0001
mariostar0001

@mario-nin-freak That may be part of it, but most of it is the Japanese gamers' general love of RPGs, and the sheer number of said genre on the PSP that gets released every week.

mariostar0001
mariostar0001

Two 3DS titles in the same week? Is that a record or something? :P PSP Go numbers are hilarious, I bet the Gameboy Advance could have outsold it if they still produced it.

Does DOA have the highest first week position of any 3DS game so far? I can't recall one getting to 1 and first week everything was released so I don't know.
