Big in Japan June 14-20: Super Mario Galaxy 2

Nintendo mascot's extraterrestrial exploits score big again; Ghost Trick, Xenoblade, PS3 Grand Theft Auto: Episodes also crack top five as DSi XL easily tops hardware chart.

by

While the Japanese sales charts often highlight games and series that are cherished overseas but largely overlooked in the West, they can also underscore just how broad the appeal for other franchises can be. For example, the popularity of Nintendo's Mario is international, and in the case of his latest adventure, intergalactic.

When Mario is really ticked off, he brings out the stardust.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 topped Media Create's Japanese sales charts again for June 14-20, its fourth week of release. While the 52,978 copies it sold over that stretch were a far cry from the nearly 340,000 sold in its debut week, the game still topped the week's charts handily. Super Mario Galaxy 2 more than doubled the sales total of the second-best-selling game, Capcom's supernatural DS adventure game, Ghost Trick.

Mario wasn't the only cross-cultural success of the week. At fifth place, Take-Two Interactive's Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City was the week's best-selling game for a non-Nintendo system. The compilation of formerly Xbox 360-exclusive add-ons for the open-world crime game sold 20,682 copies, just shy of the 20,810 sales posted by Nintendo's Wii role-playing game Xenoblade.

Nintendo was also successful on the hardware front, with the DSi LL (known as the DSi XL internationally) handily besting all systems with 30,183 sold for the week. The PSP was a distant second with 20,929 sold, narrowly edging out a pack of contenders in the Wii, DSi, and PlayStation 3. Sony's other handheld, the PSP Go, continued to flounder, finishing last among all hardware platforms with just 837 units sold.

Xenoblade is doing good hopefully Nintendo will localize it because I want to play it and I don't want to buy a Japanese Wii to play the games I'm missing out on.

@monson21502 they are actually known for buying anything that is collectibles or about collecting , so yes tamagotchis, game boys and ds's everything that has different colors may be bought be a single person there, also that is why monster hunter and pokemon were(and are) so popular there because they are about collecting, nintendo 100 years ago probably already had benefits from this collection minded society

Sony execs are probably scratching their heads right now trying to figure out why a handheld gaming system with no slot for games sold so poorly.

@ Dekanis Nintendo were the guys saying they weren't competing with 360/PS3 before the Wii was released. Not that excited about those sales. way too much hand held gaming for my taste.

I love how I could make a homemade console out of balsa wood and compete with the PSP Go.

Good for Mario. Although I'm ashamed to admit that I bought Mario Galaxy 2 at launch and I only played an hour of it. I'm sure it's amazing, but Monster Hunter Tri just won't give me a break. :p

@edant79,the japanese are famous for buying up new nintendo handhelds. even if its only a new color. its like they treat them like pokemon, *gotta catch/collect them all* if you watch these charts they prove me right everytime...

the japanese market is different in many ways, everything that comes from america isn't as well received as japanese products, xbox never has and never will be selling as well as ps3 or wii there, psp sells so extremly well specially because of monster hunter(that is a big hit there), it's even a surprise to see chapter from liberty city in the list, not that much becuse it isn't a not japanese product(every GTA has sold well even there) mainly becuse the ps2 GTA games have been extremly delayed there and appeared several years later than here

Goes to show Nintendo is still putting up a strong fight in the system wars, whether or not Sony denies that Nintendo's console is included... I realise they just don't want to admit that Nintendo is doing a lot better... Mario Galaxy 2 FTW!

Gamespot said: "with the DSi LL (known as the DSi XL internationally)" DSi LL is the international name, America calls it the XL. You're a little mixed up.

Surprised to see the wii beat the ps3, and way to go mario!

PSP wasn't actually #1 in the last few months. Sales of the DS got split up between the DSi LL, the DSi, and the DS Lite. Combining their sales had the DS as a platform (the DS titles listed in the top tens are all playable on any of the different DS hardware anyways) edging out as winner, even though in some months, it was just barely. Even adding the paltry PSP Go's sales (lol) to the PSP figures didn't add up to the DS's combined sales. Why it's listed differently is just a question of semantics. None of the DS revisions play significantly different games, they are all DS.
