Big in Japan Jan. 10-16: Another Century's Episode Portable

Namco Bandai mech combat game ousts Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3 after more than a month atop chart; PS3, PSP top hardware.

It has been more than a month since Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3 was released in Japan, and not a single title has been able to challenge its reign atop Media Create's software sales charts. However, that reign ended during the week of January 10-16, if only just barely, as Namco Bandai's mech action game Another Century's Episode Portable for the PSP just edged out Capcom's perennially popular action game, selling 70,217 units to 68,274 units.

Mech suits are as fashionable as PSPs in the year 3000.

Aside from a change at the top, Media Create's mid-January week did not yield much by way of moving and shaking. Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii finished third with 29,412 units sold, followed remotely by Ninokuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi, which sold 19,020 copies. AKB1/48: Idol to Koishitara… returned to the chart after a brief fall-off last week to round out the top five, selling 18,616 units.

Aside from Another Century's Episode Portable, the week's only other debut was Arc System Works' Arcana Heart 3, the PlayStation 3 version of which managed a sixth-place finish with sales of 17,219 units. The only other PS3 title to crack the top 10 was Gundam Musou 3, which has been available in Japan since mid-December.

Sony hardware ruled the day during the week, with the PlayStation 3 and PSP selling 33,190 units and 29,806 units, respectively. Nintendo's console also outsold its portable, with Wii unit sales coming in at 21,291, the DSi LL selling 17,452, and the DSi shifting 13,416 units.

@Arnoud1976 Its not a conspiracy or anything, its just a matter of accessible data. Media Create has been putting out relatively reliable weekly numbers for the Japanese market for a long time, numbers that are hard to come by for the European, Australian, or even the American market. As for the title "Big in Japan," your comment is somewhat ironic given the origin of that phrase, which denotes a band that hasn't really made it because they're only "Big in Japan" and Japan's pop-culture isn't as respected. It is the title of a Tom Waits song and a phrase that goes back decades in the music industry. On a side note: You should make yourself aware of Ninokuni, It is a partnership between Level-5 (Dark Cloud, Professor Layton) and animation Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.) and looks great. Also: If Europe is more like-minded how would it be more interesting to see what they're buying, as presumably they're buying the same things we are (although I don't recall FIFA topping US charts for months on end)?

The PSP go is being outsold by the Playstation 2. In Japan in is 2011 so I think that the PSP Go should be discontinued is seems that the Sony experiment has failed. Regular PSP is doing quite well in Japan. Download only doesn't seem to have caught on.

PSP seems to be doing well in Japan. Shame it's doing pretty crappily here in the states, since it means that we'll probably continue to see PSP exclusive titles from Japanese companies that nobody plays here.

The PSP has been racking up good numbers for quite a while now, maybe that'll help the PSP2's development for games?

No offense but why is it always big in Japan and not big in Europe? or australia? Surely we are more same-minded gamewise with americans than the japanese? Their top 10 are mostly japanese games that never make it outside Japan, so what's the point? I don't even know what Ninokuni: shikkoku no madwhattamesumptin means, and frankly i dont care. And i am pretty sure not a lot of japanese gamers check this site anyway and a lot of europeans do. Wouldn't it be far more interesting what does well in europe than in Japan? Really gamestop!! just because they get some games sooner doesn't mean anything than just that they get it sooner.

PS3 outsells 360 12 times over again

Man 360 sales are low... Microsoft never should have gave up that region. Only thing keeping 360 from going below PS2 JPN numbers is XBLA and their plethora of SHMUPS. MS should invest in more JRPG's otherwise it's gonna be difficult to win the war without atleast a substantial amount of units being sold in Japan. One million just ain't cutting it anymore.
