Big in Japan Dec. 19-25: Mario Kart 7

Nintendo racer's sales accelerating as the PlayStation Vita experiences steep drop-off in hardware, software sales for second week of release.

by

Mario Kart 7 got its second wind at Japanese retailers for the week of December 19-25, as sales tracking firm Media Create reports that Nintendo's latest kart racer surged ahead of the pack in its fourth week of release to finish atop the charts.

Mario Kart 7 sales hit the nitro boosters this week.

Mario Kart 7 sold 260,836 copies, up 43 percent over the prior week and its best outing since its launch week of November 28 to December 4. Nintendo's other new 3DS game featuring the mustachioed mascot also placed in the top 10, as Super Mario 3D Land finished the week with 174,566 copies sold.

Sandwiched in between the plumber's one-two punch was the week's best-selling new release, Koei Tecmo's Musou Orochi 2. Other new releases to make the charts included Namco Bandai's super-deformed 3DS mech game SD Gundam G Generation 3D in eighth place with 90,873 copies sold, and Level-5's Wii launch of Inazuma Eleven Strikers Xtreme.

Conspicuous by their absence from the top 10 list were games for Sony's PlayStation Vita, which launched the week before in Japan. After debuting on the charts in the seventh and eighth spot, the PS Vita duo of Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational and Uncharted: Golden Abyss dropped to 37th place and 40th place, respectively.

PS Vita hardware suffered a slide as well. The handheld debuted the previous week in second place with nearly 325,000 systems sold. However, for the week ended December 25, the portable only posted sales of 72,479 systems and finished fifth among hardware platforms. Its predecessor the PSP fared better, taking second place by selling 101,121 systems. Despite that, the 3DS handily took home the hardware crown for the week, more than quadrupling the next best-selling system with 482,200 handhelds sold.

@jhpeter From what I understand, there is a rumor of a Castlevania for the 3DS coming soon. Igarashi has hinted to this during last year's E3.

Good to See Super Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7 do so well. They are both great games, and help the 3Ds come into it's own.

@ Tauu It had been discontinue in Japan but Nintendo is having a hard time getting rid of the remaining stock so as long as their are still stock available it will continue to be sold.

the vita is going to be a late bloomer ... personally i bought a 3ds early which I sort of regret because they released a friggin white and red 3ds the colors i actually want ... but i agree with most folks that the vita cant do a nintendo price drop move right now because of its high specs and production cost ... but seriously awesome marketing move on nintendo's part... flood the market half a year early so the handheld market is in it's iron grip ... can't wait for the AA x PL mashup ...

Monster Hunter, the one franchise that moved numerous PSPs in Japan is now being released for the 3DS under Nintendo's belt. Because of this, Vita's battle in Japan is going to be steeply uphill in the months to come.

I lol @ how Gamespot tries to ignore the fact that the 3DS sold almost half a million in a week in Japan. And wow @ how SM3DL and MK7(which are both already at least one month old) outsold FF(which was released only a week ago) And I think the VITA will sell very badly in the months to come since they can't afford to reduce the price of the VITA(which is already taking a loss)unless Sony releases some killer games like MH for it. Anyway, way to go again Nintendo. :)

I'm sure Vita will sell more as soon it has a better library to choose from.

Well. I was gonna buy a VITA this week but...might just wait it out and get it when the price drops. Already got a bunch of games on PS3 and 3DS to play..., plus starting a new semester in school. And I gotta find a job in Japan...

Vita is a great machine but the price will continue to be a problem for Sony until it drops to $200. PS VITA - $250 16 GB Memory Card - $60 Uncharted Golden Abyss - $40 to $50 So if you want the big AAA game (that's the point of the Vita right?), and be able to download games and save your games, the wi-fi version will run about $350, before tax, right out of the gate. For people who have choices to make with their spare money, and who probably own a smartphone or see the 3DS w/ game at $210, this is going to be a hard sell.

Well, it's not like there are any games on it at the moment that appeal to Japanese gamers. Wait until games of their taste start coming out. Vita sales will pick back up. Same happened with PSP.

Sony will pick up the pace later on. They always have in the past. Congrats on the sales Nintendo.

Vita barely makes the top 5 in sales lagging even behind the last generation...and not even 1 vita title is in the top 10 sellers of software....this is pretty damn sad. While 3ds pulls out 3 of the top 4 sold titles and is still 1# (how many weeks or even months is that now?) c'mon Sony...you can do much better than this...especially in Japan!

@Tauu From what I've heard, they've been discontinued in Japan.

I love how they keep counting the tiny DS Lite sales. Are they even being manufactured anymore?

Vita is too expensive for a handheld. Proved that with the 3ds. Its not just the graphics, though I'm pretty impressed but its the games on Vita that will matter. Not impressed there yet. Needs a price drop. Admit it, 250-300 is too much Sony.

Ouch. Second week on the market and the 3DS is already outselling the Vita more than 6:1. Thinks looks like bad news already for it if the PSP is selling more than its successor. Sony needs to get some killer games out or the Vita has already lost Japan.

Great console the PS Vita, just give it some time until more games are released/ported to this system (just like with the 3DS ; )

Wow what a drop for the vita, got spanked by the 3ds last week!

Vita is off to a bad start like the 3DS, but I don't hear Sony fans mad at that like they were about the 3DS :P But I do wish the VITA would give the 3DS some competition.
