Big in Japan April 18-24: Pokemon Typing DS

Nintendo's portable keyboard and typing tutorial bundle tops the Japanese sales charts as PSP outsells 3DS two-to-one.

It has been weeks since Pokemon Black and White last appeared in the top 10 of Media Create's Japanese sales charts, but it's impossible to keep the collectible critters at bay for long. Nintendo's pugnacious pocket monsters returned to the top 10 for the week of April 18-24, as Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS claimed the top spot on the charts with 59,363 copies sold.

Perfect for learning to type while on the bus, the subway, or waiting in line!

As the name suggests, Pokemon Typing DS is a typing tutorial game for Nintendo's dual-screened handheld. But rather than cram a keyboard onto the system's touch screen, the game comes bundled with a full QWERTY keyboard that connects with the system wirelessly using Bluetooth. The game includes drills to bring players up to speed on the home row keys, teach them the Roman alphabet, and challenge them to accurately type the names of various Pokemon.

Other notable new entries on the best-seller chart include Sony's SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs and Konami's Otomedius Excellent. Sony's squad-based military first-person shooter sold 12,613 copies, enough to place eighth on the weekly sales chart. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360-exclusive spawn of Konami's seminal side-scrolling shoot-'em-up Gradius debuted in 10th place with 10,502 copies sold.

The 3DS's second reign atop the hardware sales chart proved to be a short one, as Nintendo's new handheld relinquished the top spot to the PSP after a single week. Sony's portable retook the title with authority, as its 49,162 units sold was more than double the second-place 3DS's total of 23,038 sold. The PlayStation 3 was once again in third place with 19,033 sold, while the Wii continued to lag behind with 7,866 sold.

3DS has been out for, what, 2 months? Just wait 'till June

@garland51 I said in initial sales. The initial burst of sales has, on average, increased on each successive generation of consoles. As consoles became more mainstream the public is more rapidly adopting each new console on launch faster as a trend.

@ GregSci It'll happen. As you mentioned, other platforms have had this happen, and done just fine.Even the now legendary DS line didn't get off to such a hot start, but once good games come out, things pick up,then the first price cuts hit,and it's pretty much blue skies from there. So,I shall just sit and wait for the good games to come, meanwhile,I shall play Pokemon White.

@Sirbobislost It NEEDS to get cheaper, not everybody has 300$+ to spend on a handheld no matter how cool is it. The same happened with the PS3 when it launched at 450$ (?), the sales where poor for months.

LOL @ the PSP sales doubling the 3DS'.

That PSP over 3DS stat surprises me. I love the PSP, but it's been out for ages and as far as I know, didn't have any major titles released recently. I was most certainly expecting the 3DS to sell better.

@mariokart64fan 3DS and DS are two different products and CAN'T be combined in sales. If the two were combined, that would mean 3DS is a rehash of the original DS which we all know isn't true. Stop being butthurt and accept the fact 3DS got outsold 2-to-1 for having subpar launch titles. As for the Nintendo sheep, keep the thumbs down coming cause you don't have anything good to play.

if they get the ds off the market that would help to ,, addinganother pokemon to original ds isnt gonnah elp either, but still its a nintneod product i guess they see it the way i do , they are selling nearly as much handhelds as sony combining the 2 ,so plus adding every week sales up 3ds is still leading if psp were laucnhed along side it the 3ds is 700 k plus units ahead of the psp andthe psp is already way behind ds so , its a easy victory for nintendo to say the least

Sirbobislost
Sirbobislost

@iAmAbel it doesnt need to be cheaper it needed better launch games for example if they had held back pokemon black and white added a bit of 3D in and made it a launch title they would of sold a hell of a lot more 3DSs

@paxis85 oh no i didnt mean you i was refering to gamespot they have a habbit of posting flamebait news posts id like to see euro sales as well since its neutral ground for gamers

@Sirbobislost sorry if i came across as wanting to start any form of flame war. i assure you and anyone else that it was not my intention. i was simply stating the fact that seeing such figures from time to time might be heartening, especially for those like me who would like a more global view of the industry and markets. While I am a gamer myself, i also work in the legal field and have a hobby/academic interest in the gaming industry. I'm not saying that what's given at the moment isn't good. I'm simply suggesting something new and possibly helpful as i'm sure there are other Europeans who are members of the site who might like that info. once again, apologies if i was misunderstood

Sirbobislost
Sirbobislost

@paxis85 because europes sales figures arent good news for gamespot the ps3 and 360 are both as popular as each so they cant start flame wars and get tons of comments on the articles

why does everyone still buy a psp? I tought everyone had one buy now... unless it broke

paxis85
paxis85

To be entirely honest though, it would be nice if it were possible to have GS follow the European gaming market once in a while. As a European I sometimes wonder if there's any market to speak of since there doesn't seem to ever be any report on it. While I don't deny that the Eastern and Western world have both a bustling industry as well as a great market, sometimes it's made to look like Europe is like a gaming no man's land by simple omission of news.

Wow, I'm surprised about the PSP but we are talking about figures from Japan. I like the PSP. Can't wait for the next one.

riariases

@garland51 Yeah, I usually check 2 or 3 sites with a consensual sales figure and go by that. For all I know my facts could be wrong too.

riariases
riariases

@hannify Like really, are you trying to argue this pointless fact with me? Eastern and western markets are different. Northern and southern markets are different. There all different. This sh** is so simple, why do you need to disagree?

riariases
riariases

@hannify I'm talking about the 21st century, the one we're living in. Rome and Greece was 'west' until Christopher Columbus discovered North America back in the 1500's. Now Europe is more central, as in the center of the map. When people generally speak of geological locations, Europe is referred to as central.

punk what do you mean ur suprised last gen tech out sold new before -see ps3 , and psp vs 3ds isnt abattle at all its 3ds vs ngp , and you can bet 3ds will win this cause of price and line up already available

"STOP BUYING CALL OF DUTY its killing the video game innovation." Love this quote. It has always happened in the history of video games. Mario, Pokemon (most milked in history) Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, 3 GBA, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, 2 Remakes, and Black and White. Many more spinoffs. 3rd parties. Final Fantasy. Street Fighter (SNES) Grand Theft Auto (PS2). Many many more.

geeze, i can't believe the PSP sold 2x as much as the 3ds...the psp has been around for a long time youd think most people in the market for a new system already have one or would've by now if they really wanted one and would be checking out the 3ds right now...the only thing i can think of is unfortunately the amount of people who were effected by the earthquake may have lost their psps and want another one because they are cheap enough now, or simply the fact that the psp has an extensive library and is significantly cheaper than 3ds right now which has little to no library currently. Nintendo really should've waited to release the 3ds for 2 reasons: 1. to build hype, i feel like as soon as i heard about the 3ds it was available. 2. launch games. they really needed some sort of mario, zelda, metroid, or some kind of huge first party nintendo name to sell this system. OoT3d isnt coming out till the summer and super mario 3d isnt coming out till some unknown time later this year...why would i buy a 3ds right now? i wouldnt.

The 3DS just needs some killer games. Thus far on Super Street fighter is the only one worth getting. Nintendo has been king of the handhelds since 1989. So when the NGP is released. I predict that 3DS vs NGP is when Nintendo finally loses the crown. NGP will take 7 years to beat 3DS lifetime sales.

The lack of Zelda or Mario or a killer app like Wii Sports was not very wise. --I hate to say it but, the 3DS demo booths don't allow you to control viewing distance very well. It gave me and my GF headaches and dizziness after only 5-minutes of game play.

its because of poor launch games for 3ds. thats all. And i am really glad this happend. Nintendo deserves this for not giving us any titles we all looked forward to(zelda oot, kart, ikarus, starfox...)you know what i mean

@riariases: I know that people can edit stuff throughout wikipedia, but so far, I can't find any other news that gives away sales of old consoles, such as SNES & PS2. Just saying.

@hannify You just agreed with my point that markets in different parts of the world have different sales. In Asia (east) the PS3 sales are the highest, go to the west to Europe (central) the PS3 sales are lower than Asia, and go to the west even more to America (west) and you have the lowest PS3 sales. You're trying to find contradictions in agreements.

@garland51 Anyone can put anything on Wikipedia. See the 'edit' link under every paragraph on Wikipedia? Yeah, but I'm not sure of the full workings of the site because most of the info is still right. And the PS2 has sold just under 150million units. About 145million, being the second best selling console ever, only to the DS (all 4 iterations) selling just over 150million units.

riariases
riariases

@hannify No, i'm just emphasizing differences in markets across the world. West and east are opposite so it's the best scenario for a comparison.

riariases
riariases

Japans sales. In the rest of the world Xbox 360, 3DS, Wii and PSP Go are selling way more and the PS3 and PSP are selling way less. The eastern market is different than the western market.

Shinobi120
Shinobi120

@SolidTy: Not only that, but the sales of the 3DS in Japan just keeps falling off week after week ever since after their launch. Look at "Interfectum's" post to see what I'm talking about. Link. @ColdfireTrilogy: The sales of the N64 didn't surpass the SNES sales. The SNES had 49.10 million consoles sold, while N64 had 32.9 million consoles sold. And neither did the PS3's sales surpassed the PS2's. It's nowhere near that at all. The PS2 had about 150+ million consoles sold, while the PS3 only now had 50+ million consoles sold. Just want to let you know about that. Taken from Wikipedia, by the way.

Sigil-otaku
Sigil-otaku

@ColdfireTrilogy I agree with that and that is the normal way of things happening but the market is a little different with handhelds to consoles, namely that there is less competition so less marginalization of the older systems. Personally I think pushing the 3DS at the current price is the only reason it didn't outsell the PSP. Like I said I agree it normally is the case but it doesn't prove much about the 3DS selling bad as it simply has cheaper competition. Bare in mind the 3DS is more pricey than traditional handhelds and just like that effected PS3 sales initially the 3DS seems to have hit the point where some consumers don't want to jump just yet. Pricing is more important than you think, hence why Wii sold so fast and outsold 360 and PS3 together initially. 3DS is a quality system and simple enough it'll sell and sell just as games come out and prices drop over time like any other system.
