Beyond: Two Souls spans 10 hours

David Cage reveals length of upcoming narrative-focused game, says 75 percent of gamers finished Heavy Rain.

Tonight during a special Beyond: Two Souls event at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, Quantic Dream head David Cage revealed the narrative-focused game will span ten hours of gameplay.

A thirty-five minute clip of the game’s “Homeless” level was shown, depicting main character Jodie Holmes--played by Juno actress Ellen Page--fighting for her life and to protect her friends.

Beyond: Two Souls launches October 8 exclusively on PlayStation 3. GameSpot will have more coverage of the event, including an interview with Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière.

Cage also said tonight that 75 percent of players finished his last game, Heavy Rain. This figure is up from the 74 percent reported in 2011.

He said typically, just 20 percent of players see a game through to its completion. However, this figure was higher for Heavy Rain because of how its story unfolds.

“But for Heavy Rain for example--that was really story-driven--the figure was 75 percent,” Cage said. “And so because people wanted to see the end, they wanted to know what would happen next…all this was very important.”

Heavy Rain reportedly grossed $100 million for Sony.

I don't care how good the story and cut scenes are, 10 hours seems very lacklustre.

That means with a lot of spare time the game can be completed in a few days. Think about that before you buy it brand new and full price.

As long as the quality is there, it should be a great game. Plus skyrim had a lot of problems and the quality could of been better. IMO

Woah!10h!?!?!?!?! Way to push the boundaries of gaming......it took me over 20h to get through the first chapter of Witcher 2. Seriously PS3 boasts a blu-ray player and it still only manages 10h games?

Wow...another 10hr game for $59.99...I was actually interested in this but now I will wait till it hits the $20.00 mark or buy it used for under $20.00. Platformers are great for the 5-10hr mark that pass the time here and there when you don't have the time to sit and be involved in a game and they don't cost $59.99...AAA titles like this should be at least 20-25hrs...

Xbox fanboys please stop whining about the life span of a game you won't be playing ok?

this is 10 hours of pure gameplay, without cutscenes besides this game has 4 ending maybe so this equals 40 hours aprrox and if you hunt platinum trophies you're going to have a blast with more than 50+ hours

10 hours of "gameplay", which I presume means not including time on cut-scenes and the sorts. This is still extremely short considering single player focused games are still considerably longer. If the game is 10 hours then I expect to pay no more than 40$ for the game if not less. Otherwise I will be spending my money on a well-earned downloadable game elsewhere.

people gotta stop using logic as long as the game is good it does not matter and if you dont think its good then just watch gameplay and you're good to go.

Only 10 hours  of gameplay LOL I wonder why the PS3 exclusives have low length of gameplay whereas bluray disks have a lot of space than any other media formats. PS3 exclusives must have minimum 40 hours of gameplay.

I thought he meant 10 hours in-game. I was wondering how that was possible, with the flashbacks and all. Huh.

10 hours is a really good length for a game.  10 hours of gameplay for me (27y/o proffessional) could last me more than a month and a half.  I don't get too much time to play videogames these days and these super long gaming sessions are a thing of the past for me.  So it's good that it isn't too long.

madgame23

Length is a factor, for a game that has a compelling story. Companies can't make the story too long and lose the appeal yet should not make it short and too unmemorable for those who played it. Every gamer's taste will change over the years, and with that their selections and choices, i used to buy just about any game as a kid, now I only buy what I feel is good or is really cheap!

it's not about how long is it. Just like Journey , a 3 hours amazing story. If the game is good enough, i'll still play it even it has just 5 hours.

Most Gamers are so fickle nowadays, anything that is different then the norm they are quick to criticize it.  As the age old saying goes its not the end of the destination its the journey there that matters.  I wish the studio much success for its present projects and future anything that swims against the river of modern thinking is always needed in this world in my opinion.

10 hours is about right for this type of game, as it is purely story focused it would feel much too slow paced if they stretched it out longer. Personally I'm glad Quantic Dream don't sacrifice quality in order to conform to perceived gaming conventions. Quality over quantity.

cuddlyfuzzle

This debate will rage on forever. Quality over quantity, right? Is it the vg industry that says you won't get both? dunno, but they sure seem to allude to it. It should be up to the customers to decide what their dollars are worth. Lately, my money is worth more than what's on offer.

I appreciate Cage's work, but I'm glad nobody really pays attention to his opinions on what games should be.  If everyone developed like him, I'd quit gaming.

10h gameplay could mean different things.

It could be actual GAMEPLAY for 10hs, and not counting the cinematic cut scenes and such. Looking at games like MGS4, which also don't have a lot of gameplay hours, it still does have cutscenes that are 30-60minutes at a time.

However, it could also mean, 10hs from start to finish.. We'll see. =)

Another thing, about Heavy Rain's 75% completion..  didn't it have "failure" writing in to the narrative? so even if you failed at a task, or got one of the characters killed, the story went on? right?

This means that a lot of people that would never be able to beat a boss, and simply quit, never had that option, so of course you'll get a lot more completions. So it's kinda sneaky selling a completion ration like that, but it's a good game mechanic, for allowing and adapting to failure.

I'm not inspired by Cage's vision for video games. If he wants to make a film, there is nothing stopping him I guess.

dont be tricked when they say 10 hours they mean 7 hours ..... just like when they said u needed about 35 hours to complete far cry 3 100 % only took me about 17 hours -_-

All I know is I had a thrilling time with Heavy Rain. One of the best games I've ever played. Kept me on the edge of my seat after the first couple chapters. I'll be honest and say it was a little slow in the beginning, but it picked up pretty quickly.

thekazumalord

only 10 hours? talk about short.. it should be more around 20 to 25 hours long... i hate short single player games, i need  single player games that last a while to justify paying $60 dollars for.. And i always try to finish a game, it may take longer for some  then others but even so, my goal is always to finish a game i buy..... guess i'll wait till Beyond: Two Souls goes down to around $20 or $25 dollars before i pick it up...

There is nothing wrong with the game lasting 10 hours from beginning to end. I'd actually say that is a pretty good deal of content for a game in the adventure and story telling genre.

What people should be complaining about, and is the real cause of the drama, is games costing 60 bucks. If they think that is a good price and you are willing to pay, good for you. I haven't bought a game day 1 in ages because I don't believe it is cost/beneficial.

I always finish games, multiplayer is only fun with friends, random people online are mostly douches.

danthegamer32

10 hours is fine, it's longer than today's average. If Cage's other games are anything to go by too then Beyond will have great replay value. If you want to spend hours upon hours upon hours with a single game then invest in an RPG or multiplayer focused game instead.

demonkingx5
demonkingx5

i can see why some people are complaining about the 10 hour gameplay since the $60+ tax is a bit too much especially since most console games today are a rip off so try to see it from that point of view.

insanem0nk

this game is just screaming for rent, although all of the big companies stopped renting out games anymore lol 10 hours is a joke, hope they dont plan on selling it for more than $15 on release

GetafixOz

@RSG003 Yeah a whole 10 hours!! Wo thanks for the effort. This is a really disturbing trend. 10 years ago a game that spanned 10 hours would have been canned for being half baked, now developers are crowing that you actually get 10 hours play. As for it being 10 hours of "gameplay (ahmed74) what exactly do you call Skyrim ? Game engine anim ? You can crank 100 hours from Skyrim and every single second is high quality gameplay. Sorry 10 hours is pathetic.

lex_in_the_moon
lex_in_the_moon

@eesounds Well not exactly. Most action games that are single player focused (despite some which randomly throw in multiplayer to mixed results) usually clock in around 10 hours such as God of War and Uncharted. Also these sort of games need a shorter length or they end up dragging on and suffering in quality.

lex_in_the_moon

@MatrixGamer78 Yeah, no matter how much crappier it makes the game it NEEEDS to be at least 40 hours... Ever heard quality over quantity?

@ViktorB968 Erm, Beyond Good and Evil has NOTHING to do with Beyond: Two Souls.

Beyond Good and Evil is a cartoony action/adventure game from Ubisoft, which they are making a sequel to of their own.

DaxtersSidekick

@Rheinmetal You can't control the outcome of a film. The character's choices are one and the same every time you watch a film and their conclusion is forgone.

With video games, we don't have to have the same result. Whether it's one conversation, scene or the entire game, we can affect and make a difference to how the story plays out. And whatever ending we reach is our own, not someone else's.

I'm really getting sick of this criticism. Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, for better or worse, are unique because they do what films can't, something achieved through the power of video games. When are people going to learn this?

I'd say a story driven game with minimal random Tiger gun fights is able to be timed more accurately.

@NexApex Me two. I had a couple of friends staying with me at the time i was playing through it. both my mates girlfriend and my own actively asked me to play it (unheard of before then) as they really wanted to see what would happen.

@thekazumalord This is also a game that focuses on its story and narrative, more than a gameplay aspect. This means that pacing and flow is more important, than filling hours.  10hours, imo sounds long, if that is the length of gameplay and cutscenes and the entire thing.

Take a look at games like Uncharted, that keep 20ish hour story driven games, they are way to long. After a few hours, you completely stop carring, and you simply just shoot people and get your gameplay thrills, which is fine, but story-wise you don't really care anymore.

This is why CoD games have short stories of 6ish hours, simply because that pace and speed of the story, can't go on for longer without it damaging the content. Look at Crysis 2. a great game imo, but those last few missions that push it into a 8ish hour game, is what breaks the ending imo. At that point you've stopped caring.

Keeping a pace of high and lows works for a few hours, but over a span of 15-20hrs? it gets tougher, simply because at that point the story won't hold you anymore, and so the gameplay needs to stretch that extra mile.

I suppose if you want 15+ hours, and a focused and good narrative? than you'd have to start looking at games, similar to TV shows and episodes. Releasing a very solid and fun gameplay game, with episodic, story heavy missions that would span 15+hrs of gameplay in 1-2hr episodes? that could work.

@demonkingx5 I agree.  I'd rather pay $10 for 10 hours of gameplay (probably not counting replay value) for a Telltale adventure game like the Walking Dead. Hell I got hte whole season pass for $15 during a sale on Amazon.  Even still, at the normal $5 per episode price it's a steal and a great value for the money.

All content, no grind.  The way games should be imho.

Daian
Daian

@insanem0nk you pay 12$ for a 3D movie about 2 hours long, 5 movies = 10 hours = 60$.

Some gamers are a bit self entitled.

insanem0nk
insanem0nk

@Daian not comparing games to movies, comparing games to games. you pay $60 for a shooter, that gives you days of gameplay. for an rpg, possibly dozens of hours. theatre movies rarely go past 3 hours. when i'm buying a game, im not wondering if i should go watch a movie instead. im wondering which game is better, and # of gametime is a factor. some gamers are a bit self deluded.

insanem0nk
insanem0nk

@RobDev @Daian actually, no, that is not logically proceeds from what i said. only if i said hour/money were a linear relationship. it's a good thing i never said that :) same way the other way around, i would not pay 1.5 cents for a game that was 36 seconds lol you're arguing against a strawman

RobDev
RobDev

@insanem0nk @Daian so by your logic 10 hours = $15 right? so skyrim should be $60 or $70 based on gameplay time. What about NBA2K or fifa? they can be played for 100's of hours so they should cost over $100? What about football manager that would cost $1000? Or maybe games are priced due to the amount of money it costs to make the game and the quality of it as opposed to the amount of hours spent wandering around on fetch quests?
