Bethesda stardates Trek games

Encounters ships today, Tactical Assault warps out October 24, and Legacy boldly goes where no game has gone before on November 7.

Today, Bethesda Softworks shipped out the first of a trio of forthcoming games based on the iconic Star Trek television and movie series. First out of the gate was Star Trek: Encounters, an E10+-rated PlayStation 2 game developed by 4J Studios. The "arcade style space combat game" will let players engage in interstellar battles taken from all five Star Trek television shows: the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.

Trekkers now have a date!

On October 24, Trekkers can boldly go where no gamer has gone before while on the go. That's when Star Trek: Tactical Assault will ship for the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. Developed by Quicksilver Software (Master of Orion III), the E-rated game is a real-time space-combat sim that pits Federation starships against a series of foes, including the Romulans and Klingons.

Last but not least, Bethesda also announced that Star Trek: Legacy will warp into stores on November 7 for the Xbox 360 and PC. Developed by Mad Doc Software, the still-unrated Legacy is a space combat sim that will cast players as a Starfleet admiral commanding a task force of vessels, and it will feature more than 60 vessels culled from the entire Trek timeline (AD 2151 to 2376).

Legacy will also sport the likenesses and voices of all five actors who played captains on the Star Trek shows. William Shatner will reprise his role as Star Trek's swaggering Captain James T. Kirk, while Patrick Stewart will once again polish off the pate of The Next Generaton's Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Avery Brooks will return as Deep Space Nine's Captain/Commander Benjamin Sisko, Kate Mulgrew will don the unitard of Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway, and Scott Bakula will make the quantum leap back into the uniform of Enterprise's Captain Jonathan Archer.

No best Star Trek game out there is Star Trek Armada for PC. Rocks hardcore. Try it sometime if you can find it.

fluffebunnie, the precursor to Judgment Rites you're thinking of is Star Trek 25th Anniversary, and the TNG game is called A Final Unity. Both are great.

Megavideogamer Has there ever been a good Star trek video game?

Actually yeah. There were a couple cool original ST adventure-style games for PC, one of which was called Judgement Rites , I forget what the other one was called, but Judgement Rites was the sequel. There was also a TNG game on the PC that sort of followed the same formula but it was based in the TNG universe and had the voices of the cast. That game was pretty hot. In addition to leading away teams down to planets to solve puzzles and whatnot, you came into contact with ships in space and you would have to negotiate with them or fight.

I think the problem now is that they make the games all combat and that isn't what Star Trek is supposed to be. But then again, even Star Trek isn't what Star Trek is supposed to be anymore. The further removed these people get from Roddenberry's death, we see the quality of the shows declining at a slow rate until you end up with the failure that is Enterprise and Nemesis.

Megavideogamer, yes - it's called Star Trek: Judgment Rites, from 1993. Good luck finding it or getting it to work on a modern PC, but it's a blast.

I plan on buying both the Encounters (PS2) and Legacy (360) games, as they both look to have some potential (though I am going mostly on the trailers, and the details that have been revealed in the many interviews that have been given).

You know, I'm not quite sure I understand the difference between "Tactical Assault", "Encounters" and "Legacy"... then again, maybe it's unclear to Bethesda too.

These aren't being developed by Bethesda's in-house teams you fools. Stop complaining about them misappropriating their development time on Star Trek games. They are publisher or co-publisher on these titles, not developer.

That picture is hilarious! The only thing scarier than these people are those Star Wars nutjobs who come out for every new movie. Thankfully I won't have to suffer any more from them as long as Lucas doesn't pull another 3 episodes out of his arse. By the way, can't wait to get Legacy.

I would like to see a new Star Trek FPS; Elite Force II was great.
