Bethesda picks up rights to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

Ukranian blogger claims Elder Scrolls, Fallout publisher acquires rights to develop and publish entry in post-apocalyptic shooter series, despite GSC retaining partial license.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series may move into the house that built Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, if a new report proves accurate. Ukranian blogger-marketer Sergey Galyonkin--who reportedly accurately predicted the demise of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 earlier this year--now claims in a new blog entry that Bethesda has acquired the rights to develop and publish a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title.

Will the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise live on at Bethesda?

Galyonkin writes (via Google Translate) that he has heard from a "very reliable source" that GSC Game World CEO Sergei Grigorovich has not sold the brand to Bethesda entirely, but will allow the publisher to develop a game set in the action-shooter universe.

Under the reported stipulations of the deal, Bethesda has picked up the rights to a game, with Grigorovich holding on to the rights for everything else (books, movies, and merchandise), though that could change.

A Bethesda representative told GameSpot, "we don't comment on rumors and speculation."

Earlier this year, developer GSC Game World was shut down, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 being canceled outright, despite efforts to keep the project alive. A spin-off studio--Vostok Games--rose from the ashes, and is now working on Survarium, a near-future game coming to the PC next year.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are centered around Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the original game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters. GSC Game World released two follow-ups to the original game: Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.

Stalker 1 needs to be ported to console to introduce console gamers to what a great franchise it is. It's a fPs with better atmosphere than any COD with scripted events can muster

bethesda did not "build" the fallout series get your facts straight gamespot and I really hope this is not true because stalker will become so so bland like fallout has if bethesda take it over

@eddienoteddy Did this story ever get confirmed?  I can't recall hearing Bethesda announcing they had the IP, and only stumbled across this post by chance looking through older games

You people are funny, stalker is dead, and bethesda picks up on the project.  To maybe revive it like they did fallout? Or even combine elements of it with fallout, perhaps just as a marketing tatic.   No mater the reason STALKER IS DEAD... so what ever they do is much more then what whoulda been done already.   (Same went for fallout)  See the same cry babies that whined when they decided to take on fallout. (One of the best games of the year, which would of been burried if not restored)

Im disapointed too that stalker 2 was canned, but it's gone and anything that comes in it's place is something more then what it was going to be.  So I don't get why people cry over it.

@armen511  That doesn't makes sense, fallout out is almost identical to Stalker in many ways.  The only real difference is Fallout is a High budget game with more RPG elements, and Stalker is more about survival.  The games arn't really that different, Thats like saying DIRT and Need for Speed arn't very simular.

Oh no... they're going to turn the series into another lazy, unfinished, bug-infested mess.

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!  Just please, PLEASE, use the Stalker engine.  Don't use the Fallout/Oblivion/Skyrim engine.  Don't emasculate the series, please.

STALKER's developers had problems with their first development team shut down.

Not surprised if Bethesda gains the title.

I loved the STALKER games (less so on the second one) If its true it could turn out to be good if the Devs behind STALKER had a huge company like Bethesda backing them. Interesting idea anyway.

No, it won't be as good as a PC only (Load time every time you open a door, hicups in large open areas, and so on).

As long as it remains S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and doesn't turn into Fallout.

Thank God that rumor was deemed untrue. The industry doesn't need another Fallout 3 "awesomeness". Better to stay dead than in Beth's hands.

One of best atmospheric games I have ever played and I've played a lot. Bethesda may be what the franchise needed to move forward. I hope they don't spoil it.

As long they don't turn it into Fallout 4, and keep the original game mechanics, i'm happy. Without simplification 4 consoles but...

Well, if this is true, expect the RPG elements to be streamlined and all NPCs to have 1.. maybe 2 voice-over actors.

@Shenstar75 S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl came out in 2007. Which means current consoles could not handle the graphics (yes, I am saying they are that bad). PC for life!

If you play NA games only of course you'll never hear titles like STALKER. It's a russian FPS game :)

AstroVampyr
AstroVampyr

@PDXmauler97 And to expand on what PDXmauler was saying the RPG elements comes in the form of factions, looting, npc missions (both main and the many misc/side missions) and customizable+unique equipment (such as guns from peashooter pistols to machine guns, Armor from bandit apparel to exoskeletons, and artifacts that boost certain stats). Plus this game has a pretty well established modding scene so it'll drastically increase gameplay time. So to summarize it's well worth your purchase... SO GO FOR IT STALKER (in a heavy russian accent)

MindlessTeef

 @PDXmauler97

You should be shot... :) Just joking (or am I?) It is the post apocalyptic FPS to end all post apocalyptic, Based on the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster, take a science fiction spin, put the player in the future (which is the past by now?) as a Stalker. A mercenary that hunt artifacts created by anomalies that was in turn cerated by the nuclear fallout... and so on.

Steam as the best 2, 1st and 2nd one, you will LOVE it! Trust me (or should you?)...

FPS meets RPG, great games... worth checking out!

@gamingfrendly You're totally wrong, gamingfrendly. I'd rather see another company take a chance at making a decent sequel to STALKER, than have the series completely die off for the rest of time. STALKER is one of my favorite shooters and games of all time. If you'd rather it just go off into oblivion, then I question whether you're a real fan of the series.

A semi-watered down version of STALKER is better than no STALKER at all.

Tseng
Tseng

@gamingfrendly Did you play the first two?  They couldn't have been MORE buggy.  At the very least they will revive a dead franchise, and the bugs that we have to put up with in Bethesda games are nothing compared to the bugs we had to put up with in the originals.

They didn't make New Vegas, they only published it. Obsidian made it. Which contained members from the old Fallout team.

TonnFool23

@Omarlock You mean to dumb it down ? Fallout A.I. was horrible, they didn't have a brain unlike STALKER's A.I. It felt like FEAR's A.I.

Should really look at what I type sorry... it is late here. I meant first and third fame; Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat...

Would be nice if some one could come up with like a way to change mistakes in you original post... like a... "edit" button or something. Just an idea,,, might even take?

gamingfrendly
gamingfrendly

@Tseng you could not be more wrong the first 2 with all bugs in account were better than how fallout 3 and new vegas started plus id rather the franchise die than get dumped down with crappy writing and poor game mechanics just so more kids can buy it.

TheDarkSpot
TheDarkSpot

@TonnFool23 Oh, yeah, I used to compare STALKER's A.I. to FEAR's A.I. STALKER was one of the few games where I had an A.I.  actually sneak up on me. I saw this one guy in the corner of my screen one time, moving towards me in a crouched position. The cool thing was that he shot me dead when I turned towards him but not before.

sodiumpentathol
sodiumpentathol

@i-like-me No. But since it's Bethesda's trademark to use as little VO's as possible in their games, expect even less.

Tseng
Tseng

@gamingfrendly Guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.  FO3, while not as ambitious as STALKER, at the very least didn't have many if any game breaking bugs.  STALKER, on the other hand, while still a great game, would not only crash frequently, but some missions would break causing the player to reload an earlier save (assuming they had one far back enough that whatever broke the mission hadn't happened yet).  Hell, the first mission was never properly fixed even after patches.  And if you say you would like to see a great series die rather than be re imagined by a different company (one that does open world games rather well, comparatively) than you aren't a real gamer.

@sodiumpentathol the only game that has a noteworthy voice actor performance is bastion, beyond that i could not care less about voice acting beyond death spasms
