Bethesda 'demakes' Fallout 3 in Japanese

Publisher replaces region's website with retro version of 2008 Western RPG to introduce country's gamers to "freestyle" adventuring.

by

Bethesda Softworks' Fallout: New Vegas didn't put up numbers to rival Square Enix's Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest franchise in Japan, but the Western role-playing game did make an impression on the country's sales charts. Today, Bethesda made a play to continue courting Japanese gamers, replacing New Vegas' Japanese-language website with a promotional 8-bit "demake" of Fallout 3, which saw first release in the country for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2009.

Set in Fallout 3's Capital Wasteland, the demake allows players to navigate the pixelated world by way of a menu system resembling many of the popular Japanese RPGs in the country. Clicking through the Japanese-language dialog box options yields simulated gameplay, also rendered with 8-bit care.

8-bit graphics offer a surprisingly accurate representation of melted faces.

According to Bethesda, the game is designed to better acclimate gamers to the "freestyle" play that characterizes Western-developed RPGs.

@oneligas Nice of you to not pay attention to any of the recent news from Japanese game developers. Pretty much your entire post is inaccurate.

@oneligas yeah this effort is comparable to remaking Fallout 1 and 2.

Would anyone prefer if Bethesda remade Fallout and Fallout 2 with the Fallout 3 engine instead of this, and turn off the timer in Fallout as a option as well

i recommend only playing this on pc anyway. DONT play Fallout 3 on console, its not worth the loading times. No loading times on the pc = a better experience. I also recommend to NEVER buy a bestheda game till 3 months after release or more.

8-bit "demake" .... I just don't get it!!!!

I bet that 8 bit version has a lot less bugs and crashes than the original. Hopefully our Gamebryo days are about over with this franchise.

Make it the original Fallout 1 and 2 style, then I might be interested. Until then, I have Cladun - This is an RPG to play.

Seeing as I grew up with nintendo, I too would like to play this.

Since it is 8-bit, it'll take less processing power. Bethesda, if you port this demake to the iPod, I will gladly fork over $60. Hell, Fallout 3 on the go? That'd definitely make you better than Bungie.

All those weaboo mods for oblivion and fallout 3 have finally coerced bethesda into showing its true colors.

This is just another example of the East-West RPG culture clash statement. In Japan the Western RPGs are scorned and that is all that will ever happen until Square Enix or one of the other JRPG makers makes a Western style open world RPG then it will be revolutionary for Japanese gamers and it will sell like hot cakes. Personally i am finished with JRPG's ever since dropping FFX in the middle of the game to picking up Morrowind.

@Spartan90 Looks like it's flash based, so my Chrome just shrugged and went about its business of asking me in Japanese what I wanted to do next. Which is when I shrugged. All I know in Japanese is "Domo arigato"...

Demake is my word of the day. Time and time again, Bethesda shows why they are the gamer's company. They (and Bungie) are the best in the industry at this.

if you use google chrome as a browser you may be able to translate the website.

It’s hardly a game as this article would have you believe. It’s a tutorial slash guide to how a western style RPG is different. Don’t worry if you can’t read Japanese. You’re not missing anything.

I wonder if the Japanese failure to embrace sandbox games has anything to do with them living on an overpopulated island where there's barely any elbow room to speak of. I just wish that FNV was as good as Fallout 3. I hate seeing Obsidian deliver another mediocre take on a great franchise.

All they need to do now is throw in the monotone music that came with the 8-bit games of their time.

The 8-bit screen shot reminds me of the old Ultimas on the Apple II+.

Fallout 3 was the scored the highest Famitsu rating of ANY western game EVER released in Japan. Falout: New Vegas was a cheap knock off but I hope Japanese gamers play its predecessor, which was truly a great game.

I'm officially jealous. I want this demake.

Are they going to demake. JRPG's in Western free roam styles for us? lol!! This is pretty hilarious to me. Bethesda could probably just make the whole game into a 8-bit (linear - take them by the hand) style RPG just for them as long as it sell 500K or more.

so basically they are copying metal max?

Why go 8-bit? why not make a Demake the way the first 2 Fallout games were made?? Whatever, if it sells and the Japanese players like it who am I to judge??

How awesome is this? They should release a version for English too--there are still a lot of JRPG fans in the west after all, and I loved fallout 3 as well.

If only they treated all of today's "AAA" franchises like this. If only !!..... ah well... the golden age of gaming is forever lost, I guess :( maybe I should move to Japan?

Not for nothing, but this whole thing is a bit of a funny slap in the face to the Japanese.... Here ya go, we dumbed it down to your level so you can finally "get it" ... if I was Japanese I'd be a bit insulted... I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand that different cultures and Countries like different things. All they have to do is throw in some turn based fighting and some bad pop music that sounds like it's out of a bad 80's teen movie and they'll climb over each other to buy it.

I want this in English! It reminds me of the oldschool RPG's like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy (which is still my favorite in the series). I would love to see a brief return of the 8-bit days.
