Bethesda can't guarantee that Elder Scrolls Online will hit Xbox One, PS4 in 2014

Creative director Paul Sage says studio is "working round the clock" to release by end of 2014, but can't guarantee it.

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of The Elder Scrolls Online are targeted to launch before the end of 2014, but Bethesda can't guarantee that they won't slip to 2015.

"I will tell you we are working round the clock to try and make that happen," creative director Paul Sage told IGN. "I can't guarantee anything, that would be foolish to do, but we are certainly working with that goal in mind."

The Xbox One and PS4 versions of The Elder Scrolls Online were previously scheduled to launch in June, but just two weeks ago, Bethesda announced a six-month delay. That puts the game's new release window at around November 2014.

Explaining why the delay was necessary, Bethesda said at the time that it was faced with a "series of unique problems" specific to the Xbox One and PS4. These problems were not named outright, but Bethesda said integrating its systems with each console manufacturers' networks "has been a challenging process."

Also in the interview, Sage said The Elder Scrolls Online is not likely to get a Player Housing option anytime soon. "I will tell you that when we get to player housing, and I think it's one of those things that when you have a game that's been running a long time it's one of those things you want to get to, it has to be something that's done differently and done well," he said. "That’s about all I can tell you. We have no firm plans for anything on housing at this time."

The PC version of The Elder Scrolls Online launched in April and it will add its first adventure zone, Craglorn, sometime this week as free DLC. For more, check out GameSpot's review of The Elder Scrolls Online.

What amazes me is they expect people to pay for a subscription on top of the xbox gold fee. They say they have been trying to get Microsoft to drop the gold requirement but won't even consider dropping the sub fee. I checked this game out on pc and in my opinion it doesn't justify a monthly fee

Love Elder Scrolls, but refuse to pay a subscription for it. So long Elder Scrolls...

Looking forward to it, really enjoyed it on the PC, but my computer can barely run it. Hopefully characters will be cross-platform (the characters themselves, not cross platform play) like FFXIV. But with Microsoft in the mix we probably won't get that.

ESO? I forgot people still play generic crap.

In the words of Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive, "I don't care.".

Don't get me wrong because I seriously don't care, but, wasn't this supposed to be on console before PC? And I do believe it's on PC.

This game will likely be free to play by the time it comes out on console.

Haters suck more than they claim the game does.

Xbox's new pricing will certainly lead to more interest in the the console, there is a huge cult following for the Xbox Live platform and they will surely go out and buy drive up demand. Gamestop stand to

Eerily reminiscent of what happened to FFXIV when it first came out..

So, a 6 month delay and they cant even guarantee that.  Can you really trust these people to release new content on a regular basis

We'll I can guarantee Bethesda won't be getting my money for ESO any year they finally decide to launch.

Cochleadoc

That's fine.

Just make sure this game is amazing and that it's worth the money.

Oh, and drop the monthly fee.

I am curious about how ESO is going with its sales and such. Anybody know?

I would of much rather seen ES #6. No awful subscription fees, way better graphics. What would be the most amazing thing ever would be co-op. There was no need to go all MMO. Never go all MMO.  0.o

If they are struggling to just get it to where it is now then they should just quit. I rolled my eyes when they first announced TESO and my eyes are still rolling. Buggy messes are sometimes entertaining in a single player game, but thats not how I want to describe my MMO's

tribeofasher

Eh, I don't think I'm gonna bother with this anymore... If they drop that monthly sub and charge $29 for the actual game, then MAYBE I'll get it for my next-gen console just to have an MMO to run around in. But...

Since it will be free to play soon I don't think anybody cares about the console versions anymore (?)

Dont really Care about ESO anymore, im playing FF14 on my PS4 and having a Blast!

i dont think many people even care anymore. if parent company zenimax cant figure this out by now then they need to get a clue. like i said before, id be damn surprised if the game's community is still going strong next year.

Don't bother, I've seen enough reviews to know this game is garbage

@straightcur Uhhh, yeah, it is Bethesda and Zenimax!

Where have you been the last 10 years???

I am glad they are fixing than releasing, not releasing than fixing!

hina_ken

@Gravity_Slave I bet your post just devastated them!

They might even rethink their strategy and hurry up to get it released on time just so they don't lose your money, since you have no patience and react so immaturely.

Unless you never planned on buying it in the first place, for instance you don't like these kind of games.

If that's the case, we still don't care.

@deltron77 The beta didn't impress me at all, but I'm not really into MMOs anyway.

You played beta? And you think you can voice an opinion?

@katerinafm The game's doing well.  There's way too many trolls who want to tear it down but most of what they blather about is personal preference, i.e. "It should have been a Skyrim multi-player".

cratecruncher
cratecruncher

@katerinafm The vgchartz website has weekly sales data up to May 10 with sales stabilizing around 12k units globally (372k total since launch).  The problem is Zenimax is a private company and has decided not to provide direct sales figures so the 12k is Steam, brick and mortar retailers etc.  I've seen some folks multiply the number by 3 or even 4 but it's just speculating.

Unless Zenimax release their data we may never know the sales history on the game.  But what I'm curious about is how many people are cancelling their subscriptions after buying the game.  That might be a far more important trend because the long term viability of ESO depends on continuing "rental".

I'd include a link but my posts get deleted by the Gamespot cops.

@EEKman71 I find people that roll their eyes to be a buggy mess. I would visit a Dr. and get that fixed.

@Sw0rDMaN Don't really care about FF14 anymore. I'm playing ESO on my PC and have a Blast! Seriously, I have a level 42 White Mage on FF14 and got bored of that game.

@samrvdman I am not bothering with your comment, I have seen enough of them to know that your comments are garbage.

Gravity_Slave
Gravity_Slave

Ahh clearly you're a dbag. You make it sound like I'm the only one who has a problem with this. I'm one of thousands, so yeah in a way, ppl like me get heard through forums and comment sections. Is it true that my one one post make a difference by itself? Yep. But when you have thousands doing the same, they tend to notice.

As proof of this just look at MS. They've made dozens of changes based on consumer complaints. Last one being a Kinect-less Xbox One. So I say to you. Suck it.

deltron77
deltron77

@hystavito i cant say im into mmo's either, i was hoping this would change that, but nope. same as you it didnt impress me, not enough to fork over $180 a year, or even $60 for the game.

I'm saying it was beta. You haven't actually played the game. Therefor your opinion doesn't matter.

@matthd yes i played the beta.. i cant tell if youre joking about voicing an opinion.

@bfeinberg @Sw0rDMaN  I got bored of FFXIV a little faster than that, even. I think I was in the 30s with my main class when I decided I had better things to do. I don't get why there's such a sense of positivity surrounding FFXIV when it's such a slow, unrewarding game that does most of the same things that other MMOs do, only slightly worse. It's not a bad game overall, just an uninspired one (with the most dreadfully boring storytelling of any game I can think of--even I started skipping the cutscenes after a while).

ESO, on the other hand, is still very much keeping my interest. I think it's a pretty great game and people are giving it too much crap. They're overreacting to the little stuff and being really unfair to it. Some of the criticisms I've actually seen are "the game has loot windows, and that really takes me out of the experience," (not remembering that every Elder Scrolls game ever made has had loot windows), and also "sometimes, the quest marker on my map glitches out and points me into a building, then right back out again." That was literally the only thing that friend of mine had to say when I asked him about why he thought the game was lame and not worth his time: the quest marker sometimes glitches out. I'm not excusing glitches, but why is everyone in such a hurry to dismiss ESO, and then praise FFXIV instead? I don't get it.

50 cents a day. Youll pay 180 a month for a smart phone. 170 a month for cable. Hbo.. netflix.. and when a game comes out that can give you hundreds of hours of entertainment all of the sudden people want it to be free. Cheap asses.

hina_ken
hina_ken

@matthd Someone who thinks $240 a year to play one game is high, it doesn't make them a cheap ass.

But hey, some people have no sense of money or budgeting, and companies thrive on people just like that!

Cochleadoc

The difference is I'm not a dickhead. But you are a cheapass.

bfeinberg

@NX75 @bfeinberg@Sw0rDMaN The worst I have heard are when people make up "facts" to diss the game, such as you only get one gold drop from a monster. FIrst off, they are very conveniently forgetting that 1 gold is 100 silver which is 100 tin/copper. In FFXIV, maybe you get 100 copper off a monster. Well, guess what, that is 0.01 gold, so guess what, your MMO SUCKS 100 times worse than ESO!

Also, the whole one gold thing is patently false. Yeah, in starting zones you get 1 gold, in later zones you get more. Dumb asses.
