Best Buy pulling 8GB Wii U stock?

Leaked memo from retailer tells employees to send all new units back next week, while stores should expect more Wii U deluxe units soon.

Retail giant Best Buy is getting rid of its 8GB Wii U stock, according to an internal company flier sent to Kotaku.

The memo states that "stores should pull all new in-box units and send them back" on June 10-11. "Store should expect to see more Wii U deluxe units arriving in the coming weeks."

The 8GB Wii U retails for $300, while the 32GB Deluxe model sells for $350.

Earlier this week, a similar memo from GameStop suggested the 8GB Wii U model was being discontinued at the retailer. Nintendo labeled the report a "misperception" of the issue, saying stock was only being "rebalanced."

Gamers can expect to learn more about Nintendo's Wii U plans this week at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, when the company holds a Nintendo Direct on June 11 at 7 a.m. PDT.

Nintendo had sold 3.45 million Wii U units globally as of March 31, 2013, with fewer than 400,000 sold in the first three months of 2013.

32 GB is really cheap.  They need to really upgrade to at least a 200 GB HDD.  It wouldn't be that expensive.  >.>

OK COOL! So it was the usual Nintendo trying to save face and having indeed all Wii U inferior models being sent back for proper disposal/upgrades.

Nice to see customers are less likely to be ripped off now. You know, aside from how you already are with a Wii U Deluxe anyways.

If only Nintendo had released with a strong library and that Sonic game coming out to back up its system launch. Every kid is going to bitch up a storm when their parents buy them the cheaper Wii U and all their friends at school windup with a PS4 or something. You know, for the kids that give a damn. It's all about what the majority is playing, they don't care what system is better so long as its the most talked about.

Nintendo is going to be just fine when they crank out some good games by years end.

Stunned at how poorly received this sytem is. I never really played nintendo other than the NES, SNES and 64.  I never really felt like I was missing out on anything.  There is only soo many times that I can save the princess or Zelda or whatever.  Still I feel like it's important for Nintendo to survive as they were part of the original systems that really got me into gaming.  Unlike Sony and Microsoft they don't have the backing of a mega software or hardware company.

i need to pick up myself a wii u basic 2001 set.

It's evident this gen console winner is PS4. WiiU is, again, one gen behind, it looks cool now but in a couple of years history will repeat itself and WiiUs around the world will be collecting dusts; and the Xbox One is just a slap in the face of everybody that buy it.

I think Nintendo figured out that the 8Gig is a piece of crap compared to the Deluxe. Either way I think they'll make the white versions the same value as the black.

The question is what is going to happen to all those 8GB units?

I've had my premium Wii U since the morning it launched.  That 8gb model is a joke.  Nintendo would have the manpower to pump games out but they sit on all that money instead of investing in new studios, bigger teams, and new I.P.'s.  Seriously Nintendo, I've been a fan since 1984 but get off your cheap asses and spend the money to compete.  Trying to live off your past successes is going to end badly.  Don't end up like Sega, which I miss as a hardware company.

When Smash Bros IV comes out, I wouldn't mind picking me up a white deluxe Wii U model. I don't know, the color has just grown on me. It looks sleek. And it doesn't attract dust. But I don't want to lose out on the extra internal memory space. Do it Nintendo!

I dont mind the nostalgia. I mean Zelda...freaking amazing. And a link to the past was to me the best zelda game ever. So I like to see the sequel.

But Nintendo doesnt have the man power to release that many great games to compare to Sony/MS 3rd party developers.

If WiiU was like $200 and games were like $40 and there was like an amazing exclusive once per month. Then ya I would find a reason to get a WiiU. But it doesnt and it wont.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

its ok nintendo... just release the games we want and we'll come back and buy consoles and games and you will be ok this generation. And don't worry what the naysayers say. When the gamers finally realize that the X1 is a rape machine you will get some sales from those guys, as well as guys who'll get a ps4. Do a VC Game of the month that you give away for free to your customers, and make it online if possible. Like a online version of golden eye, or bomber man.

You won't even have to worry about next generation either. Because there will be no MS console. Hell there's no MS console this generation. They have a gaming service.

@Ju-noh it's 32 GB of SSD. Which is really expensive and a lot faster than a HDD.

@telaros that´s why i get the Wii anyway, i don´t care what the others think, you know the graphics, the fps

grbolivar

@nathanjones007 Fine? Big names like EA, Bethesda and 2K are totally ignoring the WiiU, history repeats again, with a WiiU you can play only the Marios and the Zeldas, want the Battlefields, the Fallouts, the Bioshocks? Sorry, better get a PS4.

And back to home base to be re-cased in black and remove their SSDs and replace them with 32GB SSDs....

@Incubus420 They will survive. The only year they havent profit was 2012, they've always been crashing up for decades, even if the Wii U totally fails they have the luxury to have another 3 console fails to even begin to question their "survivability".

@Nintyfan95 How can someone call 32 GB Device Deluxe? doesn´t matter the color!

Because is cheap than any console now!

grbolivar

@AlexFili They will take out the 8GB chip, put in a 64GB chip and resell them as "Ultra-Deluxe" for $500.

@AlexFili they will be dumped in a landfill lol.  i doubt they will discard them, might be resold in Pan-american countries.

@sexyeyes79 I don't miss Sega, Sega was a one-hit-wonder with the Genesis, they got lucky because they had a mascot "Sonic" which I love. However Sega could barely compete with Nintendo in the past, neither the significantly cooler Sony PlayStation. I certainly think Sega demoting themselves to software only was a great idea, Microsoft has to be the best replacement, Halo franchise is extremely awsome franchise, despite recent slow down.

devild0ogwhite

@grove12345 so you want a 200 dollar console, 40 dollar games, and yet still expect an "amazing exclusive" on a monthly basis?  Are their fairies and unicorns in this world you live in where this is possible?

Bayonetta 2, wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 . Also Nintendo will make an announcement tomorrow on upcoming games(likely mario kart, super smash bothers ,zelda and some type of mario 3d game perhaps galaxy 3) Whether you love or hate Nintendo they are great at putting out great 1st party games that sells like hot cakes. Yes the PS4 sounds like a great system, i may check it out. When they announce a price cut plus release some good quality games they will be competitive with the PS4 and xbox 1.

Yes nintendo does need to change things out like makes 1st party games with new nintendo character's and attract more 3rd party companies to makes games.

Bottom line is people should not be to fast to write Nintendo off.

@UnbidCube @Incubus420 As you said how many times can you play a game where "the princess is in another castle" or zelda or racing karts!!! Nintendo are dead in the water and in all honestly they deserve it as they have not progressed since i was 10 (31 now!!), working off the same business model as the NES/SNES 20 years on is poor business. They got lucky with the Wii everybody brought one thinking thats interesting idea, played Wii bowling for 6 months then all the Wii's i know of started to collect dust, a few hardcore Nintendo heads got a couple of Zelda/Mario games but when your self publishing the same game over and over for 20 years something has to give. Nobody has a divine right to stay in the market just look to Atari and Sega to prove that!! The only future i see for them is multi platform publishing of their catalogue like Sega cause no other dev's are making stuff for the Wii U, in fact the opposite they are moving away in a very public manner

@silvergol @Nintyfan95 For Nintendo, anything more than 2GB is "Cutting-Edge Deluxe". I stoped  buying Nintendo consoles since GameCube, their hardware are always dated and disappointing, while everybody else is playing Bioshock Infinite, Wii owners have to play Wii Sports....

@snxx @bunchanumbers psh. I am over MS at this point. I already know about the underclocked sram and the overheating issues again.... AGAIN! You'd figure that they would have learned from the 360 but its become apparent that yet again they're gonna rush out a underpowered box with half cooked ideas.

If ps4 doesn't have any of the anti consumer crap that MS does I'll buy that and a Wii U for the holidays. Well for sure a Wii U anyway.

@MikeLirette@Mayleene@patiotom@UnbidCube@Incubus420While this news has nothing to do with Gamespot, if you pay attention you'll see that every Nintendo article written by Eddie Makuch has a negative spin. He always finish his articles about Nintendo with one or two negative paragraphs, usually just saying the same thing over and over again.

The particular last paragraph on this news? I've read it on at least half a dozen of other articles of his. Also he usually don't report the positive news about Nintendo (there are a few), and when he do, he just increases the number of negative paragraphs at the news end. At one time he spent half the news size just repeating old, negative, data to contrast with the good news.

Now, it's true that good journalists have to look at both sides of a story and put the news in context, but take a look at Makuch article's and you'll see he puts way to much effort in being negative about Nintendo and not so much about any other news. And since he's the most prolific news writer here on Gamespot, that makes the whole site looks like anti-Nintendo biased - which is not true, but Makuch sure it.

Mayleene

@patiotom @UnbidCube @Incubus420 They will probably start supporting over devs.  Money talks.......

OH!  it's the EIGHT gig WiiU that Nintendo has recalled anyway.  Why the negative Nintendo press Gamespot?  That's right........yet another CoD game in how many years and it's all glorified.

Gamespot, YOU SUCK!

@blakedaking@bunchanumbers@grbolivar@silvergol@Nintyfan95Really, I own every five consoles of this 7th gen (including the two portables) and everyone who claims again and again that there wasn't much to play on Wii other than Mario and Zelda clearly just wasn't looking. I've mentioned this over and over again on other Nintendo articles, but here it goes again:

- Madworld
- No More Heroes 1
- No More Heroes 2
- Fatal Frame IV
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
- Muramasa: The Demon Blade
- House of the Dead: Overkill
- Last Story
- Little King's Story
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
- Monster Hunter Tri
- Trauma Team
- Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbados Treasure
- Rayman Origins
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- Kirby's Epic Yarn
- Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
- Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- Dead Space: Extraction
- Red Steel 2
- WarioWare: Smooth Moves
- Sonic Colors

Also let's not forget a few early gen/portable games very worthy of a revisit, like:
- Pikmin 2
- Resident Evil IV
- Okami
- Trauma Center: Second Opinion

Also, also, it had an interesting selection of indie games, like:
- World of Goo
- Sword & Soldiers HD
- La-Mulana
- Cave Story
- Tales of Monkey Island
- Sam & Max
- Back to the Future

And, even about the Marios and Zeldas, the system had two huge Mario Galaxy games (most Nintendo consoles only got one main series Mario) and two full sized and original Zeldas (again, most Nintendo consoles only had one). And let's not forget a few spin offs, like Super Paper Mario, which is very good.

Now, everyone may disagree with a few games on this list, but I'm sure there's quite enough there to please any person who gave the Wii a chance and didn't look at it with prejudice while salivating for the next Xbox360/PS3 eyecandy.

@blakedaking @bunchanumbers @grbolivar @silvergol @Nintyfan95 really? after wii sports we played golden eye, then secret of mana on the VC, and smash brothers and bomber man and black ops. It didn't even bother me that there wasn't a bioshock for it. I could think of things I wasted money on that were way worse than the Wii. This generation the bad purchase is gonna be the X1. I really think the Wii U will bounce back.

@bunchanumbers @grbolivar @silvergol @Nintyfan95 Wii Sports was fun, but the Wii was a disappointment in my eyes. After Mario, Zelda and Mario Kart, there wasnt much there for a "mature" gamer.

grbolivar is just trying to say that outside of the novelty games, there wasnt much else and i agree. Wii U is most likely the same way, i will never find out because i dont want to waste money like i did on the Wii

bunchanumbers

@grbolivar @silvergol @Nintyfan95 I don't get it. I spent hours and hours laughing and having fun with my friends because of wii sports. It was a favorite for me and my friends for months. What is wrong with that?
