Bejeweled 3 shimmering on Dec. 7

PopCap Games bringing latest iteration of seminal match-three puzzler to PCs next month for $20.

Even before the casual gaming business began booming, PopCap Games was helping gamers idle away a few minutes with addictive puzzle games. One of the most popular of those games, Bejeweled, saw first release in 2000 and has since sold more than 50 million units, spawning a host of copycat and one-offs in the process. Today, PopCap announced that the latest installment in that puzzle series, Bejeweled 3, will be available for the PC on December 7.

Bejeweled is back.

Bejeweled 3 will not stray far from the tried-and-true match-three style of puzzle gameplay. The game's simple play mechanics see players presented with a field of gems, with the goal of swapping the place of two adjacent baubles to form a sequence of three or more and clear them from the board. The game awards bonus points and score multipliers for extended sequences.

As for the changes in Bejeweled 3, PopCap has crafted a 40-mission quest mode, which includes 11 minigames that meld classic Bejeweled play with other "classic game mechanics." The game also includes updated versions of four modes previously seen in Bejeweled 2, which saw first release in 2004. Other new riffs on the Bejeweled formula include Ice Storm and Poker game types.

Bejeweled 3 will be available through PopCap.com as well as other digital distribution portals and retail outlets for $20.

@gamerpipe, to answer your question just look up a little game called the Sims. The most simplistic time wasting game ever made has seen more sequels than South Park has seen good episodes...

Release plants vs zombies 2 instead. The only good game they have ever done.

@denniswzh There is an indie game union called the autonomous regime if you are really interested in indie games.

Bejeweled 2 was just free for a day recently. Be patient.

@kevin-V: maybe GS could make a spot or news exclusively for indie games to help spread the word.. you know, to help the little guys..

I haven't actually played the real Bejeweled, but I have tried the ports they have developed with their Blizzard partnership (Bejeweled WoW addon, StarJeweled Starcraft 2 custom map). Seems to be an okay game for passing the time. It was especially useful when I played WoW and I was leveling the boring Fishing skill.

@Shardz7 -- Unfortunately, not every game announcement can become a news item, particularly with dozens upon dozens of small indie games and plenty of other games being announced--and released--every month. We can't do a news story for all of them--but a sequel in a well-regarded franchise played by millions of people on a number of different platforms is an announcement that should receive one. A lot of people have their favorite pet games from small developers, and I wish we could cover them all with great zeal. AI War is a great game, and we try to attend to as many small gems as we can, but our small-ish staff by very nature must focus on news items that pertain to greater numbers of people during one of the busiest times of the year. That said, I hope you have a great time with the new reimagining of AI War; it certainly looks to be a big step.

@ people saying its a quick cash-in. Not quite. original Bejeweled, 2000. Bejeweled 2, 2004. Bejeweled 3, 2010. Many game franchises get games every year or two to milk the money out of it. With these new modes, etc. Popcap is simply just making sure they stay on top over the countless clones. The new modes do sound interesting too. Ice Storm and Poker =o

@ karnovrpg I agree. The Puzzle League series is easily the best puzzle game, and Bejeweled is obviously heavily influenced from it. But they are made for different gamers. Puzzle League is for hardcore players(at least if you want to be good) and Bejeweled is the "King" of Casual Puzzle Games supposedly.

Never really liked Bejeweled. If you want a real match 3 game, play Tetris Attack. Give us more Peggle. Or better yet, Plants vs. Zombies 2.

With children who are hooked on Verizon Games and a few indies I bought on Steam I softened my stance on casual games. But I still can't see paying $20 for a Bejeweled.

This game has already had its share of success in the franchise. Let's focus on something unknown and extraordinary like AI War 4.0 which was just released this week. Arcen Games also makes Tidalis - a superior take on the match-three genre at an amazing price. I just wish Gamespot was a bit more adverse in their scope of what's out there.

meh I love bejeweled but this is nothing more than a quick way to make a buck. I would just stick with bejeweled 2.

Man if this was on a console I'd be very happy :/ I have bejeweled 2 on ps3.. but it's not much of a looker(seriously couldn't they have HD'd it up like Hexic? :/) and it gets meh after a long while of playing T-T

All PC popcap games are $20 on their website, and have been for quite some time. They have specials sometimes, and im sure the ports to other systems will be cheaper. But there is nothing wrong with captializing in a captitalistic country. People are going to buy it. Stop whining, thanks.

$20? That seems a little steep. But what do I know.
