Bayonetta Updated Impressions

We saw more of Bayonetta's story, characters, and weapons in an all-new demo at GamesCom.

When we last saw Bayonetta, the titular demon witch with the killer hairstyle was being played on the E3 show floor. PlatinumGames' Hideki Kamiya had a brand new demo in store for us at GamesCom 2009.

What's New: Before we got to see Bayonetta in action again, we were presented with a lengthy new cutscene that answered some questions but asked many more. From what we know, Bayonetta had been sleeping for 500 years and was suddenly awoken in order to battle for forces of good. We're introduced to a new character, Luka, a debonair human who briefly met Bayonetta as a kid and has grown into a man and possible love interest for the seemingly ageless witch. Unfortunately for him, Luka and Bayonetta both exist in different dimensions, and while he can smell and hear her, he can't reach out and touch the alluring witch. Some of the cutscenes we saw used the in-game engine, while others were prerendered and had a cinematic look complete with sepia and film roll effects.

What's Different: While Bayonetta usually equips pistols on her ankles, this time around she was sporting two rocket launchers attached to her lower legs. While slow, the rockets pack a hell of a punch and can take out certain enemies with just a single round. You can also perform an ultracool handstand move where she fires both rockets at once. From what we saw, it looks like you can also lift any weapons your victims leave behind, as well as objects. At one point, we saw Bayonetta raise a car and effortlessly fling it at an enemy.

The demo ended with Bayonetta, doing battle with a monstrously large angel in midair. The menacing celestial being had a huge, faced tongue (think Aliens) and spiked tendrils. After attacking the tongue for a moment, Bayonetta was able to run up to the head and cut off the tongue in a satisfyingly bloody and brutal animation--something we've come to expect from this promising gorefest.

What's the Same: We got a chance to play the same demo that we first saw at E3 2008 and got hands-on with at E3 2009. We also saw some more witch time moments, a slow-mo mode executed by dodging attacks at the right time. From what we can tell, the ability looks like it will play an important part in the fast-paced combat.

What Impression the Game Made This Time: Bayonetta is looking great and seems to manage making ultraviolent action both rewarding and humorous. The game packs plenty of action, drama, and sass together, and while we haven't seen a lot of the story, the combat looks and feels both intuitive and fun. We look forward to getting more time with Bayonetta before its launch in early 2010.

Besides that it seems there's little magic attacks involved in this witch game, the sexual suggestions turn me off. Rocket shooting, hmm, half naked, hmm. No thanks. Graphics look great though, so I keep tracking this game.

Hmmm, visualy it's nice, but I don't know what to think about, when concidering what I will get for $60.

i agree with some that the use of guns and or guns may just mean serious amount of button mashing

tons of potential. this is something you can work with and make huge, if you know how to carry the ball. can't wait to see what it's like :)

@Kyuubi_Vegetto, well, I loved Royal Guard, personally. The perfect timing of the just guard and just release techniques required a lot of skill, and when mastered, it made most boss fights a cinch. I preferred Trickster for all out fun, but Royal Guard was what I used on bosses the most.

people talking about dmc styles: i definately use gunslinger more than anything. anyway looks like it could be quite fun, but they should probably start looking at spells and such too along with the guns.

I think this game could turn out really, really good or really, really bad.

Still hate the main character, but the Devil May Cry influence is enough to make me keep an eye on the game.

Generic action platforming garbage. It will sell like hotcakes.

Ehh.. it dosent look bad, but it looks like DMC without the sword play,-shruggs- I'd rather have another DMC staring Dante to be honest, im not saying this game will be bad ok, yes yes I am.

Kyuubi_Vegetto ... royal guard was my second most used next to sword master... but whatever lol, its made by the same people who made dmc4 so it's bound to be descent atleast

Dualmask I'll always give a good looking game the benefit of the doubt, and I like the unusual approach, but I'm with others about the heavy concerns regarding the combat. No matter how flashy or cool gunplay is, from a gameplay standpoint it's just mashing buttons. Who here played Devil May Cry 3 and spent more time with Gunslinger Style than Swordmaster or Royal Guard? Not many I would imagine. I'm pretty sure that of the 4 styles present Royal Guard was the least used style in that game.

this looks really cool its interesting to hear about this one and how it will progress. it sounds like the player might be able to play both luka and bayonetta in the different dimensions back and forth.

im seriously trying to get into this game but i cant get past of the main character and how stupid she looks... and also the trailer i saw of the game there the main character was sluttier than mtv music videos

Looks interesting. I still need to see more previews and probably reviews before I decide to buy it. I can't see how mixing gore with humor can be good. I would love to that in action.

will be interesting to see how this compares to DarkSiders which comes out at roughly the same time. (for the rest of the world, japan gets it waaayyyy in advance) but they are spending more time on guns than melee combat which was the down fall of DMC 2 and 4. lets face it, in these types of games the enjoyment comes from getting up close and personal and hacking a gorey path to ultimate victory. button mashing shooting just doesnt cut the cake here...

I can't wait either...DMC is boring to me, but the movies were cool. Only thing I liked about DMC ever was I think on part 3, the Ice Bone Dragon.

I just bought DMC 4 and I Think shinkada is right they should focus on more cool looking sword moves

Shinkada
Shinkada

If they're going to keep focusing on boring ranged weapons we're going to have a problem. As far as I can see it's taking everything that made DMC4 inferior to 3 and following through with it even more closely. More effort put into ranged weapons than melee weapons, not enough weapons in general, more effort put into the (inevitably dull and predictable) story than the gameplay itself. And, of course, following the God of War style rather than the Devil May Cry style, where combat versus bosses is just something to waste some time while you wait for overpowered grapples/special attacks to show up, instead of requiring different combos based on enemy movements and habits. On top of the ludicrous time between its release in Japan and the rest of the world which has almost killed any anticipation I had for the game, I really don't have high hopes for this one.

In hindsight, not all the DMC games were all that great. The third one was really the best as a whole. I don't know that I care for this much anyway, but if I play it it'll either be as a rental, or after it's dropped in price by a fair amount.

Hmmm... definitely will get it but not sure if this is a "pre-order" type of game for me yet.. I think it may drop to $49.99 pretty fast, like Prototype did. If they include something cool in a Collector's Edition, similar to what they have with Assassin's Creed or Batman:AA then I'll definitely consider it, otherwise, I'm still on the fence..

Still kinda uneasy with the main character... so shes kind of an old witch with a weird bun looking thing on her head that makes her look like a cone head, and shes COVERED in hair..... am i the only one not turned on by her quote on quote "allure"? Considering how much sexual suggestion there dishin out in the trailers for this game, this seems to be a defineing factor here... and its creeping me out lol

Bayonettas producer is the same as DMC. So.. you were saying? Both rocks.

it looks neat, but just a Devil May Cry clone on steroids.
