Battleship FPS strategy game due May 15

Double Helix Games developing genre-meshing title set in upcoming movie's universe; due this May for Xbox 360 and PS3, with later release for Wii, 3DS, and DS.

The Battleship board game is jumping to the big screen this summer in a new motion picture titled Battleship, but the franchise is also expanding to the living room with a new genre-meshing game.

You headshotted my Battleship!

Activision today announced Battleship, a title that combines the first-person shooter and strategy genres. The game is due out on May 15 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Wii, DS, and 3DS versions coming later. Battleship the game will share a premise with Universal Pictures' film, but it will tell its own narrative in that universe.

The new Battleship game follows demolitions specialist Cole Mathis, who is caught up in a fight to defend Earth from an alien invasion. According to Activision, players will be tasked with commanding a U.S. Navy fleet on the sea while concurrently managing troops on land.

Double Helix Games is developing the high-def console versions of Battleship, with Magic Pockets handling the game on Nintendo's platforms.

@Decessus, fair enough mate, and i completely agree with you.

@thenephariouson You misunderstood me. You said the game would get a four out of ten. I thought that was an optimistic prediction because I think it will be lower. It wasn't a completely serious remark though. I was trying to be funny, but the internet makes delivery somewhat challenging. :)

I actually thought it was a joke when I read that Hollywood was making Battleship a movie. What a sad world we live in.

Hmm.... Arh.... .... .... .... ehh... hm.... Dun know about this... i like both Strategy and FPS.... hmmm... Dun know.... I still think a Co-op Action of a Digital version of the board game Battleship may sound like a nicer idea...

why do people keep saying the movie is based on a board game, ive seen the trailer and in no way do i get that impression, just because it has the same name means nothing

Well, if a video game were to finally nail down the RTS/FPS hybrid, and do it right, it'll be a movie tie-in game. ...That makes sense right?

Freezezzy

The movie itself sounds dumb, and now it has a game based on it (big surprise, right?) ... which also happens to be an FPS. A licensed game... based on a movie, which is based on a board game... and both have little to nothing to do with the original game. Sounds like they just needed an excuse to make another FPS.

Why bother? We already have Battlestations: Pacific

Here are the percentage of sales for the games ... 20% : People that loved the movie and bought the game just because they loved the movie. 5% : People that buy the game just for the game. 75% : People that thought it was just a digital form of the actual game battleship.

If this game doesn't live up the old Battlezone standard, I will boo until my throat is raw and can boo no more. Of all the franchises, though, Battleship? Well, here is goes nothing...

Yeah, this game is going to be bad. It's sad that I can say this without knowing much of anything about it and still be right on target with my assumptions. I think by now, we all know how this process works and this game will inevitably be really, really bad or mediocre at best.

Since its a tie in, it'll probably be rushed so the game elements won't gel together properly,

A strategy-FPS game COULD work, but it'd be extremely hard to do. It'd need a big name developer, a HUGE budget, and a really long development period. But all my faith was lost when I realized it was a movie-tie in game, probably thrown together in 3 months to promote the movie. Prove me wrong, Activision.

thenephariouson

well the fact that this is yet another tie-in, i call 4/10.

@kennythomas26 ditto, MAX Payne 3 is more interesting then this game :D But lets hope movie will stand up and get a little more stars.

This movie, and now game, is quite possibly the dumbest fictional piece of entertainment I have ever seen come to life. How the hell do you turn a table-top strategy game that involves calling out grid numbers and sticking pins onto little plastic ships into an alien invasion movie and an FPS!!!?? I have no faith left in humanity.

I just watched the trailer for Battleship. I liked it better the first time when it was called Battle: Los Angeles.

I haven't bought a tie-in game since Goldeneye 64, since they've all pretty much sucked. I'll keep any eye on this one though.

Turning the Battleship franchise into a movie about a stand-off with aliens is cool. Getting Double Helix to develop it is not.

I will not be getting this regardless because Max Payne 3 comes out on the same day so I'll pass on this one.
