Battlefield Play4Free firing up PC in 2011

Electronic Arts dishes details on new free-to-play franchise entry; will contain maps from Battlefield 2, weapons from Bad Company 2; beta goes live Nov. 30; Battlefield Heroes recruits 6 million.

On the same day that Electronic Arts reported its mostly dismal second-quarter earnings, a company spokesperson teased the announcement of a new Battlefield series entry. A full reveal was promised for Friday, November 5, and now the publisher has made good on that pledge.

He's screaming because he can't believe the game is free.

Today EA officially announced Battlefield Play4Free, a new first-person shooter due for the PC in spring 2011. The title will be the publisher's second free Battlefield-themed shooter, following the stylized Battlefield: Heroes. EA also noted that Heroes has registered more than 6 million users, double the recruitment tally the publisher announced in December 2009.

Battlefield Play4Free will be decidedly different from Heroes, in that it will sport realistic characters, weapons, maps, and environments. The title will feature 32-player multiplayer support and will contain maps from Battlefield 2 as well as weapons and classes from Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Players will have access to 16 vehicles in Play4Free, including the Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the Russian T-90 main battle tank, and the light strike vehicle. Further, players will earn in-game currency as they progress through the game. That money can then be spent on weapons and equipment. A teaser trailer (embedded below) shows off the game's environments, weapons, and vehicles.

EA did not announce if Battlefield Play4Free will contain an in-game marketplace or any other details regarding how the publisher will monetize the shooter. A beta for the title will kick off on November 30. Players can sign up for the beta through the game's registration page.

With the success of Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 coming out. more and more gamers are demanding free online play. With Champions online and Lord of the rings moving in that direction. Could this trend hurt WoW

I find it funny how they show the game with and outstanding teamwork on trailers, and when you go play online team deathmatchs become free-for-all with restrictions. If in CS and in Killing Floor are this way i don't believe this one'll be different

what's that. EA? It's not a remake of 1942/a fleshed out 1943 for PC? Oh well. Wake me up when you've got something worth caring about.

Nothing new, I'd still rather play Day of Defeat. But maybe they can pull it off! It'll be an exciting ride if it lasts.

@GrgSpunk Don't talk if you don't know what you are talking about. You console gamers have basically everything. We only have a small amount of things. So just.. don't talk.

Why is it always just the PC versions and not the console versions that get the jets?

"EA and free?! Where's the catch?" Play-for-free = Pay-to-win The default weapons will suck in comparison to the paid ones, meaning the players who pay the most will win since they'll have by far better guns than those who paid nothing. Just like BF Heroes, it will start out with equality and after a while the paid over-powered weapons will rain down and destroy the fun. I would so much rather get ads forced down my throat and keep all weapons free to be honest.

looks exactly like battlefield 2 which was a great game. Hopefully we will get a battlefield 3 or a sequal of 2142 for PC, they were some of the best games.

@jackbananas Dungeon Fighter Online and Vindictus are excellent (more so DFO) if you can keep an open mind before playing them. If you can give DFO a chance (yes I know the graphics aren't next gen 3D durrrrrr hurrr) then you will probably fall in love with it. It has some of the most fun pvp out there, and all of the classes and subclasses are completely unique and fun to play.

I love the concept of these free to play games. But I'm the kind of guy who can't stand having to pay extra to 'unlock' certain parts of the game. Especially in multiplayer games I hate the fact people who want to spend more on it, will have a definate edge in terms of guns/vehicles and options. But hey, to each his own. I'll stick with the flat-rate battlefield games.

This looks like an excellent deal. BF2 was and still is one of the best games I've ever played. I actually miss playing that game, but I cant due to technical difficulites with my laptop.... But this might motivate me to go buy a new laptop that can handle modern games. To me BF2 is STILL the best fps out there...

ea doing something for free hHAHHA i must be dreaming

super_newber

@pubboy That's because Valve has Steam, which thousands of people use anyway. If they post a free game, everyone would know it and download it instantly. EA on the other hand needs websites like gamespot to promote their free games, otherwise no one would know about it for days. Once everyone found out that EA did release a free game, they would be peeved for not knowing about it sooner. As to everyone else, the game's free. I can't even comprehend how someone could complain about something that costs them little more than hard disk space, and a few minutes of time to decide whether they like it or not. From the looks of it, it seems to be BF2 (awesome when it first arrived) with better graphics, and it's free.

pubboy

I love how EA feel the need to make a big announcement about a free title every single time. It just makes me think its all a ploy to get people to like them. Valve on the other hand dont make big announcements to the press they just do it, upload it onto their steamworks network and everyone gets a surprise. Meh I'm just an EA hater.

okassar

Comeon guys, we're suppose to encourage them to continue down this path...if it's even semi decent there's nothing to complain about.

"32-Player" wow, why can't we go back to the way it was in BF2? It's still the best game they've made because they aren't trying to do better for some reason
