When most people following Battlefield Heroes were expecting the free-to-play PC game to open up, EA DICE was shutting things down. Having previously pegged the game for a late-2008 rollout, the Swedish developer abruptly put the skids on the heavily stylized installment in its popular open-warfare shooter series, saying it would be shutting down the game's closed beta test until early 2009 in order to put a layer of polish on Battlefield Heroes' backend systems.

Earlier 2009 having arrived, EA DICE said today that it plans to reopen the Battlefield Heroes closed beta test tomorrow, February 11. Those who had previously been involved with the beta test will be able to resume playing the game, and DICE plans to continue inviting players who have signed up through its official Web site.
The developer gave no indication when Battlefield Heroes will enter its open-testing phase. However, EA said during its most recent earnings report that it expects to officially deploy the game during its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009.
A free-to-play game, Battlefield Heroes will earn its keep through microtransactions, the purchase of in-game items for real-world money. As detailed in GameSpot's most recent hands-on with Battlefield Heroes, the game features a robust lineup of character customization options, which play into the game's over-the-top aesthetic. Staying true to the series' roots, the multiplayer-centric game offers a number of vehicles and weapons that players can maim one another with.
Battlefield Heroes is just one of several franchise titles in development at EA DICE. Earlier this month, EA announced that Battlefield: Bad Company 2--a sequel to last year's well-received console shooter--would ship out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in early 2010. This summer, EA will deploy Battlefield 1943, a WWII-set downloadable multiplayer-only shooter available through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, as well as for PCs.
