Battlefield Hardline Development Began Over Two Years Ago

Developer Visceral started on the cops-and-robbers FPS "about a year before" Dead Space 3 was released in 2013.

Development on new games often begins before a studio's current project is complete. But with Visercal Games, not longtime Battlefield series developer DICE, being the one behind the upcoming Battlefield Hardline, just when did work on the game begin?

More than two years ago, it turns out, according to Hardline creative director Ian Milham. Posting on NeoGAF (via VideoGamer), he responded to a question about whether work began before or after Visceral's last game, Dead Space 3, was complete. "Well, development sort of ramps up rather than begins all at once," he explained. "There was a core team on this for about a year before DS3 shipped, then the bulk of the team came over."

Dead Space 3 was released in February 2013, putting the start date for Hardline somewhere in the early-2012 range. With it scheduled for release this October, that means the game will have had more than a two-and-a-half-year development cycle. This tracks with what DICE boss Karl-Magnus Troedsson wrote on the officially Battlefield blog recently when he said he has "been working with Visceral GM Steve Papoutsis and his team for several years on the cops vs. criminals concept."

Milham was also asked about the studio's new IP, which job listings from several years ago revealed it to have in the works. "We always have multiple things going at different scales," he said. "Star Wars is our other thing currently going, but we always have some other stuff simmering, including the New IP."

The Star Wars game he refers to is rumored to be an open-world game of some sort, and is not the new Star Wars: Battlefront, which DICE is handling. Little about the Visceral game is known beyond the fact that former Uncharted creative director Amy Hennig is at work on it and, like all future Star Wars games, it will be part of the official canon.

Many of the details about Hardline, including its very existence, have become public as a result of leaks which forced EA to make its official announcements sooner than it had planned. The latest such leak came yesterday when the trailer above was posted online, revealing the game's October 21 release date on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Just how much new stuff it has left to show at this point is unclear, but EA will nevertheless be showcasing Hardline next week at E3, so stay tuned to GameSpot for the very latest.

People are surprised that it take times making a game?
That it wont magically pop up one week before going gold?

For a good while I kept saying this game wasn't going to be all that to myself and casually to a few friends. I was skeptical till I found that DICE isn't exactly behind this one. I will admit Battlefield is fun to me but my god I was not willing to shell out money for another possible broken game like BF4. I like BF4 don't get me wrong, its the title that truly brought me into the franchise. I had played 3 before and wasn't too impressed overall. But for the newest installment to have so many bugs coming out because they rushed to compete with COD: Ghosts was just stupid on their part.

COD will always have their following, and they will have theirs. The chances of them "swaying" some causal goers away from COD probably would've been greater had they not presented something that felt half finished and is steadily being touched on. Freezing, and having your equipment disappear, etc is just frustrating...and does not make your product look good. Especially when such thing should have never been in the finished product, or at least shown up so frequently. I had thought they were just tossing out another to see what happens, glad that isn't the case. But here is hoping a lesson has still been learned and something similar does not go down. Glad to have some interest now instead of disgust.

It amazes me how so many people are so quick to downgrade this title. Like seriously, this game hasn't even come out yet and let alone have an actual trailer for this game. Its a teaser trailer for crying out loud. Am I disappointed that they are going the Cops and Robbers route? Yes. Was BF4 a complete disaster when it was first released? Yes. Do i still love playing BF4? Yes. Regardless to all of that I probably will still get this bc I cant stand CoD anymore. It annoys me to the max that people think this game is going to come out exactly like the latest BF installment. Give them a break. Not every game release comes out perfect and you judge this game like its going to be the same trash release just like BF4. For one thing, its not the same developer and another REAL argument is its not the same annual Madden crap CoD puts out every single year. Not a lot of true BF fans on here I get it...

does that mean that this game was made with a different engine from the ones dice made? or the engine that made bf3?

"if" members of the developing team indeed leaked this, it may be as a mean to put pressure on EA , who might not have enough faith on Hardline. lets face it, how many Battlefield fans r crazy about this Cops vs Thief shooter? I know Im not, if there is going to be a game with "Battlefield" in its tittle it better be a military concept.

at the very least EA should remove the word "Battlefield" from the tittle, if they r going to milk the franchise at least they could do it right.

"Many of the details about Hardline, including its very existence, have become public as a "Result of Leaks" which forced EA to make its official announcements sooner than it had planned"

Yeahhh I don't buy it, also if they have been working on it for two years and they have a release date for October this game better not have any problems within the first few day. I do like the concept tho

I like the idea and I would love to play that game.I am really tired of all the war games that we have these days.

rmartinezdl

lol do they really expect us to believe this? it is BEYOND OBVIOUS, that its just a battlefield 4 copy and paste with a different skin. I mean even the leaked video showed a dawnbraker map from bf4 with differnet buildings skin, in conquest mode with different labels. ea is lame

Gankstar_VX84
Gankstar_VX84

Noone really cares anymore. EA Killed the battlefield franchise with BF4 and Visceral killed Dead Space No faith left...

Popa2caps

Over hyped garbage with a battlefield name. All there using is the name Battlefield and selling a garbage title.

Syphon_Filter2
Syphon_Filter2

Yeah, right. Same words we have heard with the BF4 and its the terrible demo and garbage. No thanks I don't need this crap again and no more COD or BF demos.

Stop ruining the Battlefield franchise by throwing up a battlefield game every year EA... oh wait.. too late.. Welcome "Call of Battlefield".

EA thinks that they make good business by rushing unpolished games to the market, never fix the bugs and release more DLC instead.  But I can tell you that the Battlefield brand has been damaged by Battlefield 4.  I am sure Hardline will have underwhelming sales.

urall

I was fan of battlefield title. But EA will do every BS things they can to make money from this title. Not buying it anymore. They don't deserve a dollar

gearsofgore1

Battlefield 3 and 4 are very similar other than the newer game having waaaay more bugs. EA should have made another bad company game because those games were much better then the plain old battlefield game we have now.

Good luck with that net code.

Yeah, and I started painting the fence 2 years ago. And it still aint done and looks crap.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

Try to be a little bit open-minded about this, guys. EA does have a tendency to release unfinished games, but it is being handled by a different developer, so it's possible that it'll be more polished than BF4 was at launch

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

The amount of battle field hardline coverage is disproportionate to the level of interest in this game. EA trying to drum up interest in this is quite insulting when you consider they haven't even finished BF4 yet, They have taken everybody's money and run, and now they are trying the same trick again, just shows you how little they respect their customers !

Popa2caps

@frontbuttpolack Before i even played Battlefield hardline i thought it was garbage, even after having the beta i think the same.  If you want to see any of the gameplay from PS4 i would be happy to make some videos to show you how bad it is.

You get two modes so far on the beta (heist , blood money) Heist nothing more then Rush from the Battlefield series and blood money takes some parts from conquest. I will say that this should have been a DLC for BF4, But seems like a downscale port are something on my PS4.

There is a ton of invis walls on buildings and killed in action in this game when using a chopper. Ask anything if you would like to know. For your last comment about, being a call of duty trash well this might take the crap this year.

I'm quite looking forward to this, and so are many many others. All are eager to see what it's like because it's original, a new take on a little used genre. Also for the fact that one of specific reasons people brought GTA V was for heists, a feature that STILL hasn't come to fruition (I gave up waiting and sold my copy in January) and at this rate BF Hardline will be here first

If you don't like it don't play it. Anyways that's an opinion not available to you until this game is realeased. So quit bashing it until it's here!

drysprocket
drysprocket

@rmartinezdl Yup. And technically he's not lying. The first year or even 2 of development can consist of only a handful of people traveling around for "research" and just planning stuff out. But it's a safe bet that no real work was done.

stevhall88
stevhall88

@Sadek I love how you and all these other people are b*tching about this release yet you will be the first to pre-order the game.

I on the other hand cannot wait to play this sh*t, it looks cool as heck

valknight
valknight

@berserker66666 OMG... you are so right.. perhaps you should go develop a game and see how you handle the millions of complications tha tthere are with creating simple code, much less an engine or a full out game.. Quit complaining about a game that isn't even out yet.

sortajan
sortajan

@Spartan_418 History has proven that any integrity developers have when they start working with EA is almost completely drained by the time the release their first game. That, or EA declares the game a failure and the developer is axed.

valknight
valknight

@de-astroturfer There is TONS of interest in this game!! just not from you.. That doesnt mean that there is a lack of interest.

Sadek
Sadek

@stevhall88 @Sadek I'm not bitching. There are way too many legitimate problems with Battlefield 4 and EA's Origin service, and EA only does something when it turns into a huge uproar. I've had many many problems with EA and their really bad customer service.. BF4 was the last game I preordered.

I'm sure Hardline will be a good game. I'm not arguing that. But I'll buy it when there's a sale about 2 months after the game release, hopefully I'll know by then how good the game actually is.

I'm done preordering EA games or even paying full price for them.. and thats because of my personal experience with them. You can go ahead and pre order the game if you've had a good experience witht these guys... nobody's judging.

@valknight @berserker66666 haha he cant even move out of his parents house what makes you think he could help in any way to make a game better other than complaining about it hahaha, hes not the only one who complains about everything it seems like its the most that speak on these comment boards.. lol its so overwhelming sometimes i just want to end all of them.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@sortajan BF4 was (and in some ways still is) so completely broken that I don't think it can be blamed entirely on EA.

It's been 8 months since launch and the game still doesn't feel entirely finished; I blame DICE for that. It's DICE's responsibility to support their game post-launch.

valknight
valknight

@sortajan @Spartan_418 Thats nto completely true.  Titanfall was backed by ea.. as was dead space.. Both were great games. I'm not saying this doesnt happen, but it's not really all that bad.. what's the alternative.. activision?

CnConrad
CnConrad

No it's mostly hate.

There is tons of interest in the new home front destiny and the division.

Not in a cops and robbers mod for a broken game.

valknight
valknight

@Popa2caps @stevhall88 @Sadek I still play bf4.. What issues are you all referring to? It's not somethign that breaks the game, and yeah they should stop holding certain players hands but still...

CnConrad
CnConrad

Titanfall was a new IP so was dead space. Look what EA did to dead space 3.

Microtransactions in a SP PC game :/

This is a reskin of BF just like MoH Warfighter was.

daforzaking
daforzaking

Cnconrad, what is the point in complaining and keep making posts on the subject of a game that you are not going to play. Disregard Battlefield Hardline buy destiny.

yngsten
yngsten

@valknight @Popa2caps @stevhall88 @Sadek

He is not referring to current issues, but issues at release before people moved on. We were a bunch of guys playing together but there was always a problem when joining a match together, and when everyone was on the server we were lucky if one of us didn't freeze during the match.

valknight
valknight

It's got nothing to do with hating his opinion.. I get tired of the whiney crybabies saying OOOOOOH my 60 dollars is worth gold.. so give me gold.. give me more gold.... then give me extra gold for free.. Oh no this gold has a ding in it.. It's not worth m 60 dollars.

valknight
valknight

@CnConrad LOL medal of honor and battlefield have never even been similar. The series has been around since ps1.

CnConrad
CnConrad

I really hope you are laughing at yourself. Because if you don't think Medal of Honor warfighter was not a close quarters knock off of BF3.

Same engine same game minus the vehicles.

I Love the battlefield franchise but these low quality yearly releases are killing it.

valknight
valknight

@CnConrad Battlefield came after medal of honor.. I'm sorry perhaps I didn't say that loud enough for our ignorance to let it through... .MEDAL OF HONOR CAME BEFORE BATTLEFIELD...  yes the new one uses the same engine.. that's not uncommon.

CnConrad
CnConrad

Shouting nonsense doesn't make you correct, it just makes you loud and wrong.

The Medal of Honor you are talking about ended in 2007. The 2010 and 2012 games were made by a small EA studio with help from dice.

Other than title it had NOTHING to do with the MoH series. It was simply battlefield without tanks.

Try doing a little research before spouting off buddy.

valknight
valknight

@CnConrad  So when a game doesnt come out for 3 years it can't possibly be the same game even with a new developer.. hell this battlefield isn't even from the same developer... and took almost 3 years to make so it could have been the exact same case with MoH... and the reason MoH stopped being made in 2007 was because that version of it became the earliest call of duty.  They brought it back because they wanted to tell a specific soldier or group of soldiers stories..

CnConrad
CnConrad

You realize that the MoH in 2010 had its multiplayer entirely developed by dice right?

It was simply a way to annualize battlefield without actually releasing a battlefield every year like they are doing now.

Well I'm done explaining things to you. I have better things to do with my time. Next time Learn to Google it will save us both some time.
