Battlefield Hardline Dev Explains Why It's Not Just An Expansion

Lead multiplayer designer responds to concerns that Hardline looks too similar to Battlefield 4.

Responding to critics who say that this year's Battlefield Hardline looks too iterative, developer Visceral Games has detailed the differences between Hardline and last year's Battlefield 4.

In an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, lead multiplayer designer Thad Sesser explained the improvements, tweaks, and additions the studio has made to the Battlefield 4 formula. Hardline will be a very different game, Sesser said. Specifically, the team is focusing on making Hardline-specific improvements to the Frostbite 3 engine to make it work better with a cops-and-robbers game.

"We improved the vehicle physics and so on because, in a cops and criminal setting, vehicle collisions are way more important than in Battlefield," Sesser explained. "We're making fundamental changes under the hood to some of these systems. In terms of the UI, we still want it to be recognizably Battlefield, but we've got some changes."

Hardline is also not recycling assets from Battlefield 4. The designer said that the game includes brand new weapons, gadgets, vehicles, and other elements of game. "We got a wide range of maps," he said. "We got a lot more weapons. We got a lot more cool gadgets. We got a lot more exciting stuff to show you in the upcoming weeks and months. We got a slew of new game modes."

"I think you'll understand where the value proposition is with this game," he continued. "There is a lot of new content. It's not just a re-skin or a re-use of assets. We've got all new assets, we got a lot of stuff still coming in."

GameSpot editors got their hands on Hardline recently. You can read our preview and learn more about the game here. The beta for PlayStation 4 and PC is still running and ends this Thursday. The game launches on October 21 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

If they would have just called it "Hardline" I could buy into the idea...if not the game. Tying this into the BF series at all just is not right. It is a different take entirely to what all previous BF games have been. So yes, this game feels much more like an expansion. I MAY purchase it if it ever goes on sale but not at the price they are asking.

I will end up buying this game, id prefer they offered some form of discount to those who own BF4 and Premium for it maybe the game for £20 as ill end up buying Premium for it too so they will still get £60 out of me.  Id complain it should be a DLC if it was a one pack only game but i assume this will have DLC so we can't expect too much.

Call of Duty have been pulling this for years and its only kept the Battlefield name as to keep the same fans, as Medal of Honour is now defunct.  Hopefully they will make something cool out of the new franchise.

I can understand why people are annoyed, £100-£120 every time they bring a new game out is a lot, especially if you are in college or have kids.

I'm not gonna buy it. I've always loved BF but this one, No. They should've stuck with bf4 for a year or 2 and released Bad Company 3 on Frostbite 4. Think about how it used to be. Bad Company 2 was released in 2008. Battlefield 3 in 2011. Battlefield 4 in 2013. Battlefield Hardline in 2014. And of course EA says that Hardline was in production for 3 years? No way if it is that close to copy and paste. Every year Battlefield was getting better and graphically better also, but now the game is going to look like a PS2 game. Developers are getting lazy and the gaming community cannot let this happen!! We just need to stop buying games that are going downhill. Hopefully they come up with some ideas for Battlefield 4. Heck, they might wanna release like 10 more DLCs. 5 for next year and 5 for 2016.  Then release Bad Company 3. That would be the best idea

I Haven't missed a launch for any competitive shooter since BF4. I bought every cod every bf every unreal tournament everything. After BF4 if u gave me hardline free with all dlc, I'd still not play it.

that ea, is how badly you've killed competitive gaming. you think you can release info about how your still actively fixing a year old broken mess but releasing another game aswel? money grubbing scrubs.

Calling Hardline an expansion is an insult to an expansion. It's just a way to cash in on those who quit bf4 within the first few months. Also when steam do early access, it's so people can play the game prior to launch, but when EA/origin do it, it's just so they have an exscuse when the game doesn't work.

I will not buy it. It's ridiculously overpriced. It's also a slap in the face to everyone who bought the broken BF4.

What they should have done/should do is model the locations after real places that players are familiar with.

Would love to have firefights around the Seattle Space Needle. Statue of Liberty, the Arch, the cowboy in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Strip, the Bean in Chicago, etc.--and have the capability to bring them to the ground.

Now that's entertainment!

"We've got all new assets, we got a lot of stuff still coming in." For 50$ if you buy bf premium!!! F*ck you.

Lol of course they're gonna try defending it. It's An updated bf4 game mode with mini game modes. Stop trying to sugar coat it.

The "little differences' *LMAO*  Yeah, that's the exact issue...the differences are so little, they have to be highlighted.  Release this as an expansion pack, like BFBC2:Vietnam, which was their last great expansion pack and one hell of a value.

blkgto

Bottom line: Hardline should be scrapped.  They should be ashamed that they even entertained the idea.

This is an expansion, seems very similar to the Vietnam pack on Bad Company 2. I'd maybe pay $15 for it, not $60 what a joke.

Well, quite frankly. If Hardline really is THAT different, they should have released those game modes and new gadgets in the beta. What they put out so far is fun, but doesn't shake that MOD feel. It doesn't matter if they added vehicle collisions and changed things under the hood.

The point is that it still feels like a MOD rather than a full game. They really needed to bring out some vastly different game modes to make it feel different.

This is Battlefield 4 with needed fixes, different maps and re-skins.  It's basically a $60 Patch for Battlefield 4.  What's worse is so many idiots bought it that it's a top seller right now and the entire industry just realized they can put even less effort than they already do into what they create and charge full admission

I get everyone's frustration. I felt the same thing despite having alot of fun with the beta. I truly enjoyed it but couldn't help feeling bothered by how much it has borrowed from BF4.

But then I thought about it. Knowing EA, they probably didn't give Visceral much time. If borrowing from BF4 means the game is going to be alot less buggy due to EA's terrible deadlines, I'm all for it.

Now, the game is fun and the gameplay does feel different enough from BF4 to warrant a purchase from myself atleast, but unless the single player is actually amazing (which BTW I'm expecting because Dead Space was awesome) and there's a shit ton of online content then i don't think it's worth $60.

Because at the end of the day, it really is just a mod. Bad Company and Battlefield felt very different from eachother. BF4 and Hardline look and feel exactly the same minus a few changes here and there, True definition of a mod.

This coming from a long time Battlefield fan. We'll see how things turn out. Really hoping they do something special with the single player.

I'm all cool if this game has M16A3.

One thing I liked about Payday 2 was how personal those bank heists felt. You had to stealth, calm the hostages, plant the drill, wait and hope a passer by didn't see that body bag and call a cop. One thing I would have wanted, was bigger maps, especially being able to drive a getaway vehicle.

GTA5 can possibly deliver this from a 3rd person perspective but Hardline was what I was looking forward to. The beta was underwhelming to say the least. Standard game modes re-skinned as 'heists'. Other than being able to drive police vehicles, no part of this game felt different to any of the other Battlefield games. I expected a Payday2 + Battlefield crossover. What I got was just Battlefield. Meh.

Sure as hell is an Expansion Pack, Pretending to be a New Game... :P

-But what do you really expect from a company that made you pay $50 bucks for premium on a broke game..

If EA thinks I'm buying this, after that burn, those guys are really stupid.

Sorry, will be too busy with playing new, full games like Destiny, Far Cry 4, Evolve and Shadows of Mordor to be playing an expansion of that game I played last year.

EA says no annual battlefield releases, but to me they are just turning into another hungry corporate American company it's all about the cheese. BF4 was rushed and really, let's be honest here it was just a horrible game following BF3 - this game "Hardline" shows how much EA is really changing for the worst... They will lose a lot of loyal fans if this continues.

I played 3 days of beta and was so impressed that I uninstalled it days before the beta ended. I'll wait until it's $20 or less to play cops n robbers. They are seriously smoking something if they think people will pay $60+for this game. Then again I did hear about people paying up to $250 for virtual items in Diablo 3 auction house. People are dumb. LOL!

More of the same.

The game is going to flop. People are still angry about BF4, Just a re-skinned expansion. If it actually was an expansion for $30, I would buy it in a heart beat, but as the game comes out in a season full on games, I doubt ill pick this up day 1.

ummm so its basically an expansion that is secretly not an expansion!? :D

Origin seem to employ hysterical effeminate mods who ban average/ordinary girls such as me for five years for being openly heterosexual.

Go figure the type of jackboot people who apply for Mod jobs; and the people Origin prefer.

Buy Heist 2 from Steam

A better and far cheaper experience.

Why cant company just tell the truth? All this lying is just making their reputation worse.
Gamers already know that Hardline is mostly assests taken from Dice, Reskinned and then coded properly unlike BF4

Playing the Beta i thought that even for a beta this game works well but it had nothing that stood out. Just BF Trying to be something it isnt without changing the structure of the gameplay to suit the "cops and robbers style.
I think that Rainbow six:Siege or payday is more suited

BFBC2:Vietnam was exactly like the comments they made above so they cant justify a full game price for an Expansion.
We got a wide range of maps," he said. "We got a lot more weapons. We got a lot more cool gadgets

At most its worth £20-30. Sorry Visceral i have nothing again them, instead im against EA rushing Dice into releasing a buggy mess and ruining their reputation. After that mess surely EA could give us a discount on Hardline.

I noticed that there will be battlepacks in the release, I Hated them so much. Being given random sights for weapons i didnt use/Useless battlelog pics/xp boosts instead of being able to earn alot of them thru actual progress. Being Able to Buy them or get an advantage to other players by getting Premium and then being loaded with gold packs. Add to that the premium 2xXp

berserker66666
berserker66666

This game is the very definition of expansion. It's basically BF4 with 2 factions fighting each others or compare that with Payday 2 on Frostbite engine.

@seabass559 Exactly I see this as nothing but an attempt to avoid giving premium users the game for free. Screw EA and BF4. I got my PS4 simply to play BF4 and I will never give them another dollar period. I can wait next time and I'll wait till the game is dirt cheap and make sure to get a used copy so they don't see any of that money.

@saborw Maybe its the top seller or maybe they list it as the top seller and plaster it all over their launcher for the much needed attention trap. I can't help but feel like people aren't going to buy into this one. The "Vocal" majority feels that its not worth the investment.

The teleporters, I mean elevators are still retarded, and people try to shoot you through them because they know it doesn't move, and they are still glitchy af, they should make actual working elevators... its not that hard... this is the only game I've ever played that uses a teleport method

Nobody forced them to buy the game. The problems they are angry about have been the same problems since Bad Company 2 launch. If they aren't smart enoug to wait for proper reviews or for it to be fixed, then that's their own stupidity.
