Battlefield 4 players can now rent servers, unless they're playing on Xbox One

Xbox One server rental temporarily offline for BF4, but at least the pesky death shield bug has been fixed.

DICE has now launched its rent-a-server program for Battlefield 4, which allows players to hire their own private and public servers, allowing them to set their own player count, map rotation, and other settings.

Except if they're on Xbox One, because nothing in the world of Battlefield 4 can ever go off without a hitch. "We have identified rental time issues with the Rent-a-Server Program release on Xbox One," says DICE, "and have temporarily removed the feature as we investigate. The servers which were already rented will still be available for play, but admins may not be able to access all the management features at this time. As soon as a fix is in place we will announce its availability."

DICE adds that this is currently a soft launch, and is currently running with a limited amount of servers, and the developer will add additional server capacity over time. Servers can be rented for as little as one day, or as much as 90 days at a time. Here's the pricing information:

  • 1 day: $1.49/£1.19
  • 7 days: $6.99/£5.49
  • 30 days: $24.99/£19.99
  • 90 days: $59.99/£47.99

Alongside server rentals, DICE is now also deploying a fix for Battlefield 4's frustrating death shield bug. This bug caused dead players to block incoming weapons fire, effectively turning their corpse into an invulnerable bullet wall. It's how I'd want to remembered!

What is the point of private servers?

How the bleeping bleep do I get out of BF4 "CONSOLE" which automatically appears in BF4 and locks me to the spot and causes me to be killed dozens of times?

Ever since getting the game after the preorder, 50-per-cent of the times I play I get locked to the spot and cannot move and get killed....And all I see it a freaking text box in the top left corner of the screen really peeving me off with text appearing.

I dont know how I get into it (I only use the number keypad) and I don`t know how to get out of it except switch off the power to the PC, or mess about with CTRL, ALT, DEL repeatedly.

No other game has any issue with my Haswell i7 GTX 780 rig. Just this rotten BF4 one (and problems with the BETA of Hardline) ..... and when I complained about the issues, ORIGIN banned me from commenting for five years.

Its a seriously bad managed franchise with pink panty mods...

Other companies get my money now; no more Origin..

Rental servers is what I absolutely hated about BF3. Could never get a decent game, extreme admin abuse everywhere.

For putting up with all the issues that we have encountered since launch, don't you think the least EA can do is give us premium members free server rentals for a month or so at least.  after all we have spent a fair bit. I mean no matter how bad the issues were, we BF4 enthusiasts still kept playing and supporting them, it'd be nice to get something in return.

Isn't it called private matches in COD ? And it's free?! Short cuts and renting servers , that's why I don't play BF4 that much . Do Dice and EA want to retire this franchise ?

UnrealPro
UnrealPro

Paying to use custom settings for custom games? What a joke. I remember when you could do this on Unreal games and Halo PC for free. It's not enough that they charged us $60 for a broken game, $50 for premium, and $75 for those dlcs purchased separately. Nothing but greed on EA and Dice's parts.

Why do people moan about server renting? Server renting is pretty much to be expected.... it has been tradition with BF since the first iteration....clearly console players don't understand the purpose or benefit of it.

Good news! I'm on X1, so I hope they sort that out soon. I know a lot of people were upset by rent-a-server last time, but it gave the game longevity for me. I found about six mic-only servers that I really liked playing on regularly.

That said, I'm not dropping another dime on this debacle until most everything functions right. Even then probably won't do Premium again, and definitely won't pre-order next time. I'll wait the, what, seven months for the game to work and the price to drop.

Glad im playing BF4 on the Xbox One then.I hate the rent a server it destroyed BF3 when they did last gen.

Well I won't be wasting anymore money on BF4. all I can say is BF5 would wanna be a damn solid game

Senor_Kami

They wouldn't use MS's cloud servers because they said they wanted parity across all platforms.  Now they do this.  It's clear who they favor this gen.

so lets make the online experience so bad we will force our customers to rent servers.     Congrats

I would go so far as to say that this is a victory for Xbox One because fuck the shit out of this shit.

Does BF4 allow you to host a dedicated server from home? Because if not then they're really fucking their customers.

DiamondDM13
DiamondDM13

Wait what? They are asking you to pay for servers? Jesus Christ how much money they do want out of people? It's the 60$ enough? Now people have to rent servers to play? Can't you just create a party with friends and play?

Death_Masta187

@wizzzer_thy_133

no they haven't. this started with BC2.

sure you could rent server space in a data center and host your own server there for a better experiance but you were not forced to do this.

but this was back when devs still put LAN mode in their games.

Not a lot of point in letting thousands of players have a month of server rental. You'll just end up with a ton of empty servers =\

hystavito

@kahnseal  You don't see any value in being able to run your own server?  I don't like rentals really, and I think the prices are too high as well, but I still like the idea that you can run your own server.

triton1977
triton1977

@randomkidlol Exactly.

Servers are not hosted by MS cloud.

I hope they will on BF5 if they even make another game...

Private match in CoD is p2p, okay for 8 player game but no way home connections can handle 64plyrs

sirchick

@JalalBlack  Renting servers has been part of the BF franchise since the start. It is for clans/platoons, scrimmage matches with password protected servers. You can't do that on EA servers where any one can join thus competitive matches against platoons cannot be organised.

And user run servers allows better and quicker response times for people getting banned for cheating etc.

It also used to allow BF modding, though they have some what stopped that, some minor script mods can still be done for custom setups.

sirchick
sirchick

@UnrealPro  Renting servers has been part of the BF franchise since the first game...it has nothing to do with greed clans/platoons often make profit from it either by adverts or people donating or paying for a VIP slot.

The lack of rented servers on PC version sucked... we've been waiting ages for this so we can finally have servers moderated for fair gaming by actual players.

The EA ranked servers kinda suck and lack performance too. Its also harder to hack and cheat on player owned servers, because they are able to report to the admins and they forward it to punkbuster etc. Ranked servers are rarely moderated so they get away with it.

Yes. Please explain it to us as we're clearly so f*****g dense.

You don't have to rent servers to play, there are tons of official servers provided for free. You can party up and join a game no problem :)

Agret

The prices are really cheap compared to PC rentals. Its like $60/month for 64plyr server on PC

cole2012

It also means the return of the infamous 'No Shotgun' and 'No Anti-Air' tyrants

sirchick
sirchick

@cole2012  grow up ? I'm being quite serious.

Since the first BF franchise the game has been given rented servers, ranked EA servers are not the way the game is done.

Firstly it allows protected password servers for platoon vs platoon matches. Second the admins that run each server are actually online so people who are dicks or cheat get banned, which does not happen on EA servers as no one moderates them.

Thirdly, script mods allow balancing and game tweaks to even the game out. It also allows Platoons to get recognition by running popular servers and thus members join and they enter competitions.

So yeah - clearly you're very fucking dense because you're obviously a console player or very new to BF franchise and immediately must think its a money grab..when it is important for competition matches.

You can't have open EA servers have platoon matches then a random user joins and messes up the competition.

Also people who rent servers also actually earn profit from it from donations and VIP reservations and some platoons require $ for you to join them and become server admin.

Those are for the more serious BF players that enter competitions though.

Its a non issue for those who don't want any of these features, simply stick to the EA servers if you just want load up and play.

@nazgoroth EA could feed starving orphans and ppl on this website would find a reason to hate. rabble rabble rabble.

These are servers similar to PC servers. They are not peer to peer. On PC people rent servers and it makes for a much better experience.

StHapns247
StHapns247

@origkillmachine @StHapns247 @nazgoroth  I don't think anyone is asking them to lick their ass and cup their balls, they are asking them to fix their broken shit and not try to nickel and dime them.

With the awful rep this game has any attempt by EA to make more money off of it will be met with negativity.

Aaronp2k
Aaronp2k

@theprismhead @origkillmachine @StHapns247 @nazgoroth  but then the server browser would be full of non dedicated p2p severs which are laggy. I think its great they offer server rentals especially for clans/platoons who like to practise on their own servers. people are moaning saying ea shouldn't be charging for server rental but people seem to forget that pc gaming thrives off server rentals, in fact a lot of games which are not officially supported online anymore have rented servers in the list. without server rental games would eventually become unplayable online due to discontinued online support. Basically, server rentals give games more longevity. ea has realised this, and decided to offer them. I think its a smart move, and anyone complaining is really just being bitchy because they don't like ea. other games still do it and they don't get people saying shit about their games/companies.

origkillmachine
origkillmachine

@StHapns247 @origkillmachine@nazgorothSo EA should hand out dedicated server space to everyone who wants it for free? Why does this seem like an impossibly high standard to me!! EA doesn't necessarily exist to lick your ass and cup your ballz. There's a reason they make buck.
