Battlefield 4 Player Testing Results in New Update Improving Netcode

DICE releases the first patch to make use of code tested in the Community Test Environment.

DICE continues to work on fixing Battlefield 4, the latest evidence of which can be seen in a newly released patch improving the game's online performance.

The new update is now available for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases coming "later this week." One of the changes included in the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 versions of the update is what's called the "High Frequency Bubble." This allows the game to receive updates from the server more frequently for things going on "within a certain radius of the player." According to a DICE blog post, "This normally results in a smoother, more 'correct' player experience."

By default, this option is turned off in this initial patch. You can enable it from the Options menu, and depending upon your Internet speed, you'll have three different settings for doing so. (If your connection is at least 1 Mbit/second, you should be able to make use of the "High" setting.) Those who rent servers on PC will be free to enable support for High Frequency Bubbles; on Xbox One and PS4, all 48-player servers will have the feature enabled right out of the gate, as well as "a small set" of 64-player servers. DICE hopes to turn the feature on within 24 hours if all goes well.

The video above demonstrates what the High Frequency Bubble makes possible--put simply, what you see on screen more closely represents what's actually going on. There will be less of a delay between the time a player jumps or shoots, for instance, and when another player sees that action take place.

This is the first patch to be released that makes use of improvements tested in the Community Test Environment. The CTE launched last month as a platform for allowing DICE to test new fixes and improvements with a larger group of people--specifically, PC players who opted in--than it otherwise would have access to. DICE recently promised that the announcement of Battlefield Hardline wouldn't impact continued support for Battlefield 4 and announced that a "major update" for the netcode was in the works.

"The number of changes possible in this update would be difficult to pull off without the continued support from our community, both through direct constructive feedback and telemetry data gathered on the CTE," DICE said. Battlefield 4 players on PC with a Battlefield Premium membership are free to register for the CTE at the official website. The developer plans to continue making use of it as it works on more improvements.

A full list of changes in the new update for all five versions of the game can be seen here.

The damage has been done on BF4.....save your time and fix Battlefront.  I'm sure your testers are saying its broken too.

So after downloading the patch I try to launch the game and get:

"Problem contacting EA Login, please try again in a while"

Thank you Electronic fArts and MICE for wasting my time again.

Still having the same issues myself. Bullet hits aren't registering, enemy hitting me before I see them and of course getting killed after running behavior wall. Metro is very bad at this and a good example of how screwed the game is.

Yeap. Definite improvement. Game plays like the beta did now. Guns feel accurate and people die when I shoot. Keep it up DICE.

So the game finally got out of beta?

I believe Battlefield games are the kind of games that are developed in a non linear way (sorry I don't know how to say it). I mean, if you look at Call of Duty multiplayer Maps and Mechanics, you'll note that every map is designed in a way that everything you can do on it is predefined by the developers, let the bullets go through here but not here, let the player climb over this fence but not this wall, etc etc. Even in singleplayer, the AI which appears to be smarter but is scripted to work in specific situations only, instead of making one smart AI that can work in any situation.

Whereas Battlefield (multiplayer)maps are constructed in a less predefined way, where if you encounter say an hydrant, and it happens to not be really tall, the player will be able to climb over it, or if you get on a tank, and it fits through a certain door or place, you are free to try that. It could be said that battlefield maps are made in a way that the games physics and mechanics dictate what the player can do, while CoD maps can (almost)only be played the way developers intended to.

My point is, a game like Battlefield which gives the player the "freedom" to play how he wants, is more likely to have more bugs and be harder to test than a game like CoD or other restricting shooters. In a way Battlefield games are much less predictable than CoD games, which makes tham much harder to test.

I keep seeing "the QA team should have done this not paying customers" yada yada the time for sole QA adjustments has passed.  I've been a pc gamer for years and have been through many betas as well as test realms of live games.  The truth is a small subset of payed testers can only do so much.  Things often only break when you put it out into the wild (release the thing) and once it's out you can't fiddle here or there to fix it.  Especially for consoles.  The more people on a test realm the easier it is to see things that a few payed people can't see by itself and then adjust here and adjust there until it's right.  I'm not saying that they shouldn't have released as it was but I might be saying that they should do more beta testing that isn't based on just giving people a marketing preview and do more actual fixing.  Anyways there never was a question as to if the core bf4 game was good... the question was how fast they were going to fix it... guess what?  It's getting fixed and late or not that is a good thing.  Perhaps people should stop looking at the glass half empty and at least acknowledge the fact.  Now if only EA would stop trying to release on five platforms and expect good results.  Time to axe the last gen.

Not looking good for Star Wars Battlefront :(

Well, unless all of these things are in the game day 1.

"code tested in the Community Test Environment."

I love how the people that pay for the game (because they love the game so much and want it to do well) end up fixing it for people that are being PAID to make it.

Also remember to VOTE with your money, if BF4 sux, for example DONT buy BF5 :) Dont support the bullsht with cash. They get away with garbage, because we fund the garbage. Same goes for microtransactions, just stop buying it.

Trade my PS4 copy months ago. Far too little, too late EA.

This is what the Q&A team should have done. It's their job. These guys are absolutely hopeless, it's unbelievable. People will still buy millions of copies of their next piece of crap this fall, so I guess they're doing something right. That, or "gamers" are just extremely stupid. It's probably the latter.

so, this update includes, the freezing frenzy on 4 out of 10 games, the 1980's graphics at the beginning of EACH game, the sound drop every time a game start that goes on for at least 30 seconds, DOWN BRAKE!..... or is just this 2 things? the what ever millisecond between click and jump/shoot?

and the beat goes on.....

Remember all the people hell bent on defending the games lag and rubberbanding saying it was all on the end of the user...?

Yea...  you don't see too many of those comments now!

This is just pathetic though, for a company the likes of EA and Dice, with over a decade of experience making online games like this.. INEXCUSABLE is the only descriptor that begins to fit.

Time to increase the TTKs... It's getting crazy.

They made a promotional video and are almost bragging about this? I'm in shock. I guess they're finally admitting some problems in the "before."

And note that those 2 monitors, are the only 2 that have been fixing this game over the last year. No really; I would bet anything. See Hardlines for evidence of that.

Just had  few rounds after the update and I have to say dam well done, my issues were reduce by allot and that proves on my K/D that just had an increase of almost 50%...Better late then never.

Baconelite

I think they didn't fix these problems until now so people wouldn't hate on Punkbuster so much. It's actually funny - BF4 is the only Battlefield game where I have not encountered any problems with Punkbuster.

I have near 250 hours into bf4 and my friends have more then me. We all seem to have been playing just fine on PC for a long time now.  but this is Dice we are talking about people, they will patch until it's done. Also are some of the smartest game developers to ever live whether you like to believe it or not.

Baconelite

The netcode was never my main issue with the game. It was a problem for everyone so it wasn't really unfair in any way. I've had some sound issues where the sound would just turn off for some reason. Having no sound at all when other people had was incredibly unfair and it took them too long to fix that too. That was, in my opinion, more game-breaking than the netcode.

All that sounds great but when are they going to fix the ceiling glitch in the Metro map? The cunts running around up there ruins an otherwise fun map.

Psycold

Even though I bought this and basically gave up because of all the annoying issues, I still feel bad for DICE. EA turned them into Bioware, a company that was once hugely respected and now has their name tarnished by a publisher who forces developers to rush their products. I guess you can only feel so sorry for someone who signed their soul away to the devil...

when are devs and players going to realize that mp fps games need atleast update rates of 60hz and frames locked 60fps.

update rates of 30hz isn´t enough like the video shows. nextgen console games are worse than 10+ years old pc games. what is wrong with devs today? did they replace their brain with money?

TheWatcher000

Here's an idea, DiCE.  Just pay the players to fix the game.  You obviously can't.

High-Res

I knew I didn't suck that bad! I stopped playing, I got sick of the cross hairs being on someone, shooting the hell out of them and no one ever dying but me! What is this? 6 Months after release? Who cares at this point. The only ones left playing are the loyalists that aren't going anywhere anyway! I totally kicked arss in the X360 Version of BF4. It was the XOne version that seemed broken to me.

@nyran125tk Good thing is, now that they've got the tech, it can be used again. Battlefront will benefit from this.

@danielcliment I was thinking the same thing. A little tweak here and a nerf there is not fixing the freezing problem, How can all these updates be released and no one has fixed Dawnbreaker or even confirmed it is being looked at???

@djpetitte I have every bit of personal experience, as well as the majority of the community to believe- not.

And is patching it until it's done a badge of honor? How about patching it in a timely fashion. Also, many of the same bugs from BF3 carried over to BF4. So you're wrong on all fronts; just stop.

jhpiv4

@Halloll It should still give you about a 150ms improvement in responsiveness compared to what you experienced before. It won't make your actual ping better, but your experience will effectively be better.

@Halloll  find a more local server with a better connection. I've seen my ping hit 13ms on Chicago servers.

@Psycold but DICE have fixed a big deal of problems with BF4,hardly have any issues nowadays, the game is awesome and dont regret taking the premium deal...sadly everything else u said is quite true...

@High-Res Yeah, I sold my copy finally a month ago....I kept thinking it would get better, never did. Too little, too late.

Pyrosa
Pyrosa

@High-Res Yeah, but you bought it TWICE?!?  That's rewarding EA twice as much for making a bad/broken/unfinished game.

Next year, just skip an edition -- wait a month or two, and at least make them PROVE that they're "not going to screw everyone a third year in a row."

Psycold
Psycold

@Pyrosa @High-Res Did you see that leaked BF Hardline footage? I'm not talking about the E3 trailer but the gameplay footage...it looks EXACTLY like BF4, the cops even have a little bird with mini guns on the front, all cops still have parachutes and everyone carries giant assault rifles instead of starting with pistols and moving on to bigger weapons depending on what they were facing. It is nothing more than a re-skin of BF4. Shouldn't be hard to skip that one.
