Battlefield 4 novel in the works

Peter Grimsdale penning book that provides backstory about game's squad; other merchandise includes clothing and peripherals.

Electronic Arts has announced that Battlefield 4's launch this fall will be accompanied by a suite of merchandise, including an all-new novel that provides the backstory for the game's squad.

Written by Peter Grimsdale, who co-authored Battlefield 3: The Russian with Andy McNab, the untitled novel tells the story of a CIA agent named Kovic, who is stationed in Shanghai.

"How has he survived this long in Shanghai? Has he been turned? When a joint US-Chinese mission to North Korea goes horribly awry and his entire team is killed, Kovic is under suspicion from both sides. How is he the only survivor? But Kovic is about to uncover a conspiracy theory that will make him everyone's enemy," reads the book's description.

The Battlefield 4 novel will be published by the Orion Publishing Group.

Other Battlefield 4 merchandise due out alongside the game this fall will be an art book from Titan Books, specially branded gaming peripherals from Razer, controllers from PDP, mouse mats from Qpad, clothing from Jinx, strategy guides from Prima Games, and more.

Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in the works but do not have release dates yet.

This is sure to be a great work of literature destined to be studied for centuries.

one of the best memories I have playing BF was when me and my friend decided to have knife battle against each other, so we found a server with a low amount of people and would meet each other and just go at it.  he beat me a couple times in a row so I got mad and brought a tank to the knife fight and blasted him higher than the buildings. We both had a good laugh for awhile,  it was tons of fun and we still joke about it.

I will tell you why is crap..

All of this goes for the MP and Campaign....the craps is everywhere!

First - the design and the functionality of the weapons. Very far away from realistic ( the damage , the look, the recoil ) . The damage is not well planned, because you cant have more advance  weapons and make less damage from low level weapons. The snipers - well, there I will not have the time and the space to explain the issues with them !

Second - MAPS -  too many glitches, unrealistic desturctions, boring, there are heaven for the lamers and cheaters ! I have more to say but this is not forum so...

Thirdly  - VEHICLES - just like the weapons - unrealistic ( look, feel, behavior,  damage) - for instance - a sheel exlodes beside a solder and.. nothing. Some time even a plank stops a shell.

and much more.....

I really love BF BC2, but after it - down the hill, and before that - sometimes up, sometimes down. This probably a consequence of crew change or just lack of vision.

Everyone keeps saying Battlefield's campaign is crap.

Please tell me one reason why it is crap... I bet most of you just

instantly say "because it is battlefield"!!!

The campaign on battlefield 3 was a brilliant, well structured and mature story line with a book that complimented it perfectly. I really liked the campaign and I think BF4's campaign will be even better.

But... the community are just going to instantly think "it's battlefield, so I dont care about the campaign and it's going to be crap" even when they havent seen/played/heard ANYTHING about the campaign.

Get rid of this prejudice bias and grow up! Try approaching it with an open mind this time!!!

Been only a year since it came out and now BF4

Books are cool for sure.

But if you want people to read it, make a grappling story line, that makes people want more of the story....only then will they really want the book.

This is a COD milking franchise but better graphical quality.

What would a multiplayer-focused shooter need a novel for?

The plot: Russia is like "we are cooler than you".  And then America was like "No me!".

And then they had a cat fight with dudes shooting other dudes with guns that go "pew pew" and the rest of the world was like "oh noes :(".

The game picks up from there.

The only good video game book i've read was The Secret Crusade by Oliver Bowden. Most other ones were garbage.

The book will be about characters in the single player and will provide backstory to those who care to dig a little deeper into it.  I am in the minority when I say that I loved the campaign in BF3 and really enjoyed the companion novel The Russian.  I think it's pretty awesome that there will be something more to look forward to after completing the BF4 campaign.   And then I will play the sh*t out of the mulitplayer.

I got in the Cobra and started traversing the gun turret searching for targets when the noob pilot flies into a tree! Then I was on foot approaching an enemy flag when we were attacked. I took out the attackers quickly, but was running out of ammo. I screamed "Ammo", but got no response. So I jumped into a tank and quickly mowed down the enemy until I was disabled. I hopped out to repair when some idiot on my team hopped into the tank, tearing off down the street until he got himself killed. By now we were being overrun and I was shot, so I yelled for the medic to revive me, but he never came...

"...and so SexyFox69 leaped out of the helicopter, rocket-launcher in hand, deployed her parachute, and aimed right at the tank hundreds of feet below.  Just as she is about to pull the trigger, an enemy sniper shoots her in the head, killing her instantly.

Seconds later, she respawns at basecamp 'C' hoping to exact revenge on her killer."

I don't mean to be rude, but do the kinds of players that play games like Battlefield, or Call of Duty, even read books? Is there even a story to tell, beyond what the handful of hours the single player content provides?

@sagitarius1978

You sound like such a little whiney bitch.  By the way go back to English class, trying to read you comment made my eyes bleed.

Dice has been developing since you were just a little tike. The chances of you ever accomplishing anything remotely as successful as Battlefield is slim to none.   You act like your crappy opinion's are facts when in reality most gamers who have been fans of BF since 1942 would disagree with everything you say.  By the way, its a video game its not supposed to 100% realistic.  Good luck finding anything like that in the gaming world you moron.  I worked on a military base supporting their training exercise with essentially a giant video game, and let me tell you the software was no where near as realistic or as pretty looking or sounding as a battlefield game.

nothingman97

@warbdaniel Although the majority of my time in BF3 is in the MP, I still go back and play the campaign frequently because it's fabulous.  On PC it is a technical marvel.  After reading The Russian, I wanted more campaign DLC, but we'll never get that because all of the money is in the MP...which I still love btw.

@mokalid

I love how people that don't know what they are talking about make dumb comments like yours.  I get to laugh at how stupid you sound.

There's an updated version of the frostbite engine and it will push the latest gpus to the test when it comes out on pc next fall. There will be release notes and there will be updates.   Your comment could be said for games like Cod because that is truly nothing more than a re-skin and tweaks on a very very old engine.

BF games have done nothing but progress since 1942. The game has actually come a long way and done so much.  I don't think bf3 is the best bf there ever was, but its light years ahead of most games(cod) in terms of technology and what the game does.  The sound is award wining and the games looks amazing on ultra.

If Battlefield ever does get an amazing campaign it will be unstoppable because the multiplayer is bar none as far as online warfare goes.

Go back to your mother to educate you better, because you sound like a castrated dog.
Firstly
I would say that you are a lamer, who is pleased with the way the game is right, now because it gives you the chance to play as a lame ass gamer.
I didn't say that it should be a 100% realistic, but it's so faraway from the reality and this gives bad
experience from the game.

I'm Graphic designer and game physics designer, admin in 4 BF3 and BFBC2 clan servers,
beta tester and I also have military experience with close combat weapons, so I think my opinion is much  more professional than yours.

You play games from a long time ( probably ) but you played like e brainless zombie and didn't even try to see what is going on around you. You miss a lots of details that makes the game different from the rest and from the old  versions.

"...I worked on a military base supporting their training exercise...." -  THE WORLD IS DOOMED !!!

@warbdaniel@sagitarius1978 Man, are you really read what I wrote ??? ..or you can't understand it ??? What the hell are you talking about ???
"..happen in real life.."  - When did you go to battle in real life to know what is it for real ???
When it was released, BF3 announce just that, the realism of the game ! The feeling of the battle, the realistic weapons... rings a bell ???

"..enjoyable and playable GAME (not simulator)."  - If this is the joy for you, just go and play PacMan. In this type of games, the joy is meant to be when you get some challenge. To proof your skills and get new ones. More difficult it is ( more real ) more challenge do you get !!! The game have to include the ability to plant a strategy skills, battle skills and you get a joy when you succeed to do so, and kill many enemies in the process.
If you want to play lame ass game... like I said before - GO TO PLAY PACMAN.  or TETRIS, there you will get just what you want - stupid, unrealistic game!

"Case Closed."  - Man are you 12 years old? (if you are not to bad for you) But I do got a feeling that I'm talking  with a 12 years old ! What did you think that wil happend when you say "Case Closed.".. I will just  stop talking or just agree with stupidity that you are saying ???  :-D :-D :-D

@sagitarius1978 When people play battlefield, what are they after?

Are they after a 100% simulator or even a simulator? Hell No! They are after a fun, enjoyable tactical team-based shooter with not just infantry gameplay but vehicles as well.

Battlefield is a mixture of arcade with simulator aspects to it. It is above the usually FPS however it isn't too realistic to the point where it becomes dull and not fun.

The campaign is similar to this. Do we want a glitch free, dull, simulator style campaign with an everyday story that would usually happen in real life... HELL NO!

For the campaign, we want an enjoyable movie-like experience that is fun to play! We dont want a cheesy movie but a movie that is entertaining with a large amount of elements that could be real.

It is my personal opinion that Battlefield balances fun with realism but isn't 100% realistic. It gets the balance just right making this a enjoyable and playable GAME (not simulator).

If you want an arcadey game, jump back to COD.
If you want a simulator, go and use ARMA 3. Feel free to cry when it is too difficult for your untrained skills.
If you want a fun, playable game that balances realism with arcadey play making it fun and semi-realistic. Stick with Battlefield.

Case Closed.
