Battlefield 4 announces player appreciation month with double XP weekends, Battlepacks, and other perks

Hoping you forget about all the launch issues (or that you come back if they made you leave), DICE is gifting fans with bonuses and perks for all BF4 players.

Kicking of on Saturday February 1, Electronic Arts announced a Player Appreciation Month for Battlefield 4. DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson wrote in a press release today that the developer would offer, "A month filled with fun community missions and daily giveaways that you get just for jumping into a match."

In addition to multiple events and bonuses, Troedsson wrote, "We are further improving a number of items commonly referred to as 'netcode.' This will tighten the overall multiplayer experience, and we will be able to share these items with you in detail soon."

Platoons will also make a return sometime in mid-February: "In this added social layer, you can team up with your friends to create your own social space and accumulate stats together. We’re also working on other feature additions that you’ve been asking for -- stay tuned for more."

Other planned perks include:

  • A Battlepack a Day: "Every day that you log into the game in February, you’ll receive a Bronze or Silver Battlepack," which "contain bonuses like XP Boosts and soldier camos.
  • Shortcut Bundles: Two shortcut bundles will "unlock all grenades and handguns for Battlefield 4 (the base game) so you can make up for lost time. Or if you’re new to the game, they will help you catch up with players who have been on the Battlefield since launch." Premium users will get an unlock for DMR's and shotguns.
  • Double XP Weekend: Pretty self-explanatory -- there will be one double XP weekend. But Troedsson adds that Premium members "will also get an additional double XP weekend during the Player Appreciation Month as an added bonus."
  • Community Missions: Global DICE Community Missions will let you work with a team to earn gold Battlepacks. The first mission will task you with "grabbing a set number of dog tags during a specified time."
  • DICE Developer Talks: "Increased developer interaction and transparency on how we work is frequently requested from our fans," writes Troedsson. "During Player Appreciation Month, we will host a number of interviews with some of the core developers of Battlefield 4. In these interviews, you can ask them about their line of work, the effort they’ve put into Battlefield 4, or in the case of our core gameplay designer, what the balancing process of Battlefield 4 looks like.

Judging by the forums, the online problems that plagued the game for several months after launch seem to have calmed down considerably. And no further details have emerged on the potential lawsuits being lobbed at EA related to the Battlefield 4 issues.

More details will be coming soon and specific dates for the player appreciation month will be coming soon via the Battlefield 4 official forums. Is this enough to bring you back if you lapsed (or never even started playing)? Or have you been plugging away at Battlfield 4 despite the reported problems? Let us know in the comments below.

Experienced only a few drop-outs due to 'line connection'. XP weekend only just started on the 8th and i have been heavily collecting. All in all a fantastic game!

One gripe, how do you leave a game in multiplayer without physically quitting the game?

Sorry two gripes, second assault - revamped maps - not very creative really and we are being charged for them!!

The sound is all screwed up.  It keeps playing the end game crescendo and nothing else.  Double XP isn't working at all.  Lag is worse than ever.  Lots of face offs end with my killer running away with zero health, so I'm creating zombies.  Can Dice at least make them look like zombies?  That would provide some much needed comic relief.  Because otherwise this stuff just isn't funny.

EA/DICE should not have this Appreciation month yet, it is like saying the game was broken we are sorry come back, it is better now, and give us a try... oh by the way, the double exp thing is not working for many of you yet, we were not quite ready... we are working on it.

Several times yesterday I played Bf4 (different modes) and kept getting normal exp every kill every match,, even after using a boost to see if that kicked started the process was only getting normal exp, (with the boost, like even the boost was not working...) shame so many issues, great game, but maybe like Ubisoft they should have jus said it is not ready....

Because of this I have canceled preorder for DA3 and will wait for reviews I would not want to find that DA3 was also released to fit a window, when the game was not finished (that was trouble with DA2)

Anyone else not getting any appreciation?

I'm so glad I ended up waiting. Ended up getting this on 99Gamers for only 22 coins the other day using coins I got from trading in other games. EA and DICE totally screwed the pooch on this one. Not only is this game performing badly in sales, but it guarantees that there will be no more Battlefield titles in the near future...they need gamers to forget this fiasco before they release another Battlefield title. I predict it'll be 3 years before we see another Battlefield game and EA will swear how they learned from their mistakes on this game and will even have another developer and not DICE work on it. Mark my words.

So far the only problems I have when I play is when I get in any vehicle (except for the tanks and helicopters) there is really bad lagging while driving. Also, it does seem to me that the one hit bug is still there and the 0 health glitch as I usually use LMGs and will put about 20 rounds into someone and then they will just shoot me with a pistol and I'm the one who dies. Really holds back the greatness this game could have had.

I got this game a month ago and dropped it a week later, because it was such a mess.

Reinstalled a couple days ago and rage quit after 15 minutes: it still crashes, I still get teleported around while I'm sprinting, enemies who I sprayed in the face kill me - and the deathcam shows they have 0 health left; random disonnects; frame rate drops; lag spike; etc.

This game is a disgrace. Total waste of money. Avoid at all costs.

Serves you right early buyers, thanks to you EA managed to make millions out of a game in alpha stage, that's right u bought a game still in alpha stage full price.

Hope the rest of the people finally learn to never buy EA games again or to simply wait for review and feedbacks b4 jumping the gun.

What does he mean by "plagued"? The issues still PLAGUE the gameplay on my PS3. Random freezes, massive disconnection, 0 health kills at a rate of 10 to 20 per day... Last night mt boys and i were playing the server was full all of the sudden 19 people froze at once, only 5 people remained on the server after everyone's ps3 crashed.

This band aid type solution you propose, is a smokescreen to divert the attention of the players off the actual problems. I would rather you keep all your ridiculous battlepacks and your double xp weekends and provide a permanent and solid solution to the problems that STILL PLAGUE the game.

From my experience I'm thinking the hit detection still needs some work.  That or some serious attention to dealing with latency issues because lately I've gotten one shot killed in matches a LOT.

I'm actually confused why I still have BF4 installed. I should get rid of that 25 wasted gb tonight. Then I can download prons. Or something.

Ironic considering the Battlepacks and Shortcut packs are the reasons I refuse to play this game!

If they really wanted to apologize, at the very least the next DLC pack should be free. It's just all the good maps from BF3 again anyway, frankly considering all the new maps are smaller and crappier making the maps that were good from the last game cost extra is already a slap in the face, then on top of that they ship a broken, unfinished game to us. They say in the article problems have calmed down, but I had 3 crashes in less than 1 hour of gameplay last night

Dear EA, I'm keeping Battlefield 4 on the shelves because I will use it to pay less for Infamous second son in March...I do not plan to comme back to your crap game EVER.  Thank you for the worst experience EVER !

If it was player appreciation month literally Premium would be 10 dollars, and it would be double XP ALL month, and ALL battlepacks would contain 100% XP boosts. As if anyone who gives an actual fuck still plays. I'm only like lvl 50 rank and I don't care ifi get to 120 or whatever - I've truly not played BF4 since DayZ standalone came out, and I haven't even played that recently either.

I absolutely refuse to give EA any more money for BF4 but I COULD get a little too many beers in me and part with 10 more dollars,

Dear EA part 2,

Don't worry EA, I don't hate you like everyone else. They just haters. You did a great job on Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag. Great game EA......

P.S. (You did make that right?)

I want the devs to admit that they released the game earlier then intended to compete with COD.

How do i use the shortcut for the pistols? It's quite a pain to unlock a new pistol, let alone every of them...

This needed to happen, too many moaning bf4 girls. I mean yeah the game had its problems, but keep in mind the ps4 and xbox one only recently launched. The developers still haven't worked out all the kinks with the development kits of those consoles yet so there are obviously going to be problems. I have been playing battlefield 4 since early january when I got my ps4 because I am not an idiot who goes out and pays full whack for hardware failure edition consoles (launch consoles) when I can get a much better deal only a month later, and have more reliable hardware. And the only problems I have experienced is a couple of minor glitches here and there (nothing to cry about, all games have them), having to press the touchpad 4 - 6 times to finally get battlelog to connect and 2 crashes with error submit forms (not complete system crashes). I would say these issues are very minor, and people just bitch far too much.

Don't think I've ever seen a game get so slated in all my life (apart from aliens Colonial Marines)

I borrowed the game to play about 3-4 months back and it's an absolute mess - very frustrating to play - don't feel I have any say in where my bullets go - quite important for a first person shooter.

EA/DICE have done a lot of damage with this release and it will take some work to win back the trust of it's core audience.

It really did feel like a beta when I first fired it up - tons of glitches and quite a poor experience overall.

The patches made some headway in fixing quite a few of the issues but that just highlighted how broken it was to begin with, especially when I read through the change list - absolutely unbelievable.

I'd be extremely careful if I was to consider purchasing a game of this magnitude in the future - fortunately, I didn'y buy it this time around but if I had, I would have been mighty pissed.

I'd advise a little  caution before running out and buying something like this in future.

@snglmlt Yeah and another thing when your doing awesome in the game it kicks you out saying lost connection. Also, your running to where your going just to some how get warped inside a building and sent half a mile back from where you started.

@warfacepalm

Take one hand of your war face and put it back on the controller. I've logged in a good 90 hours of multiplayer on my XB1, and 75% has been a good experience. Maybe you have bad karma, or just suck at a solid war-game like BF4. Granted, the launch was a mess and caused me frustration too, not doubt more EA (greed profit vs. quality product) problems than DICE specifically. Anyway, do not avoid at all costs, the game is much better since the last update.

@DarkSaber2k The Battlepacks are a somewhat interesting idea, but I don't like teh Shortcut packs. They make it pay to win sometimes.

@Aaronp2k  wow you sir are whats wrong with the gaming community. i understand your point when it comes to development kits but that is not the problem. the reason why you are whats wrong with the gaming community is because the fact that you will pay for a half completed bug ridden game and accept it as a norm. on top of that do note that there havent been any hardware revisions on the ps4 yet so yes you did get " hardware failure edition consoles". hardware failure edition consoles" on top of that even the pc version is still littered with bugs and errors.

xxmavr1kxx
xxmavr1kxx

@Aaronp2k  Well since you waited you might not have known that the issues people experienced varied from person to person. Some people were fine, then there were some people who couldn't play at all. I think that still applies to today, just not as wide spread.

You could get a much better deal a month later on a new console? Did the PS4 get a price cut? You know even though you got it a month later, it is still a really early build of the console. Not saying there is anything wrong, but the chances of there being a problem, are just as great as a Launch console. It would be different maybe if you waited a year.

Jawehawk-DK

@Aaronp2k You sir, are a naive idiot. The sole reason that the game as bugged up the arse, was because it got released before being finished.

Aaronp2k

@ecurl143  "very frustrating to play - don't feel I have any say in where my bullets go - quite important for a first person shooter."

Are you forgetting to account for the distance of your shots as well as compensating for moving targets (aiming a little to the left or right so the enemy runs into the trajectory of the bullets). Bullets do start dropping eventually just like in real life. I have had no problems at all other than the occasional lag causing hit markers not to appear, but that is to be expected on 8 meg internet connection.

@walkerstempe  I have read about the sound for months but apart from the 10 seconds (or so) at the start, I never had any trouble with sound, until today, three matches in a row with no sound what so ever. If this is a common issue for others I can see why they get annoyed.

@Aaronp2k I have also found sticking with the team helps a lot, when I first started playing BF4 it was my first jump into the franchise and I found I had to alter my embedded solo COD style of play quite a bit.  Stick with your team mates and see how you get on, I think the way the game is setup it will reward you more for team play tactics.
