Battlefield 3 producer 'ashamed' of Bad Company 2

DICE's Patrick Bach says he "can't even get himself to start up" 2010's first-person shooter because he only sees what could have been done better.

In July 2010, just a few months before Fable III was due to ship, Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux declared predecessor Fable II had "huge design flaws." That distaste for previous work isn't unique among developers as Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach had harsh words for his previous project, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, saying he is "ashamed" of it.

Bach hangs his head in shame at the thought of Bad Company 2.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal largely focused on game testing, Bach explained how he often finds himself critical of his previous titles.

"I don't know why, but I always feel ashamed about the games I'm involved in making," Bach said. "I can't even bring myself to start up Battlefield Bad Company 2, our last game, because I feel so ashamed. I know it is a great product, but still I only see the things we could have done better."

Due out in under a month, Battlefield 3 is garnering strong reception prior to its release on October 25. However, such pre-release positivity does little to quell Bach's anxiety about the game's release.

"I'm still extremely nervous, not about what other people will think, but about how I will feel about the game," Bach said. "My biggest worry is that I will feel bad about the product. For me, my job is very personal."

Though the game isn't due out until October 25, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC gamers can try out the title today. An open beta for Battlefield 3 is now live, with players able to sample the game's Rush mode on the Operation Metro map, set in the subways of Paris. The Rush mode has two teams fighting over key strategic points on the map, with one squad designated as attackers and the other ordered to protect the locations.

Despite the game's imminent release, Bach said the beta is for more than just marketing purposes.

"We couldn't release the game today," he said. "You can't just put the bonnet on the car and drive it out of the factory before you have assembled the stuff inside it and know that it works."

Battlefield 3--which EA says has been in development for three years--will sport both a single-player campaign and an online component, which can be played with up to 64 players (for the PC version only). It will also support co-op play for its campaign and will let gamers pilot jets, among other vehicles.

Its more like you should be ashamed at what EA did to your Game.

sit down Patrick..... your pathetic attempt at creating an awesome game with an awesome name failed big time..... you put the bf series to shame with your BF3 piece of crap.... BFBC2 has far surpassed battlefield 3....

cant wait for bad company 3 and put the next battlefield 4 to shame as well

bad company 2 is way better than this, I mean at least bad company 2 had some decent humor and a little more originality on it, battlefield 3  pissed me off, just beat the shitty campaign, and then it wants me to pay to play online? Screw them.

Screw EA not gonna be buying their games anymore if they expect me to pay to play every ea game they release...it's pathetic.  I'll stick to playing Halo.

Holy crapola, BF3 is a turd compared to the brilliance of Bad Company 2. BF3 is glitchy, erratic, and has an awful campaign.  BFBC2 was a masterpiece, and it is still my favorite MP shooter.

Please do not change the format for the Bad Company title because it is the best FPS shooter on the market for me it is easy to see all of the landscape UNLIKE BF3 which is so polished I cannot stand the shiney surfaces BC is also a very squad friendly game as opposed to BF3 which still splits squads up.

I have been waiting 2 years for BC3 and I am still playing BC2 Please make it soon.

I think Bad Company 2 was a way better multiplayer game. Battlefield 3 is easily the glitchiest multiplayer game I have ever played should have gone back to the drawing boards for another year when the game is actually ready, because even now its still needs a Shart ton of work, update 3 coming up 1GB at least its not 2GB this time haha.

Battlefield 3 producer is just hating. I personally liked Bad Company 2 more than Battlefield 3 (and just about every game reviewing source gave Bad Company 2 a better rating than Battlefield 3 anyway.

badiie05

umm what? Bad company 2 is to date my favourite fps multiplayer and campaign video game, Battlefield 3 on the other hand is the most terrible fps I have played. The point is, I would probably play BC2 for the rest of my life if a lot of players still played it.

It seems in THESE comments people like to PUNCTUATE their comment with CAPITALS to EMPHASISE a point which rather than ADDING to their arguement or SUCH makes it rather MORE difficult to READ. I know people are comparing Battlefield and CoD because their both fps, but you wouldnt compare Forza and Need for Speed just ebcause their both racing titles would you? They're both different games in the genre, even if the premise is similar.

i think in all fairness CoD is getting really old although i m waiting to see if its going to be good AT ALL... i m done with just shooting guys who go RAMBO (i m talking about the bad guys) . Remember the number of times you have to shoot at them till they actually FALL??? i remember a time (or countless) in COD series when i shot a guy 5 or 6 times (maybe more and that guy slipped and fell down and i thought he was dead but he got up again) got up like he was shot by a water-gun. i admit that for the sake of an arcade style gaming CoD made it that way but REALLY... shooting a guy like 5-6 times for him to really die is really boring.....and its not just one guy... its the whole army ... what did they take?? did they get high before they started running towards me like crazy?? same thing with other games like Crysis 2 and such... Battlefield AT LEAST has the decency to know that if i shoot some random bad guy then HE ACTUALLY GOES DOWN with a shot or two.... and the stories ARE INDEED ORIGINAL... not to mention the one liners are hilarious too...THANK YOU BATTLEFIELD DEVELOPERS (and dont forget Operation flashpoint series except the RED RIVER which was a really a sad game to play)

I really want a game that actually have long lasting appeal, and being a non-US customer a game from EA, Activision or Capcom is a pricey option to choose. And I don't use steam except Team Fortress and Half-Life 2 simply because non valve game on steam are unreliable, with patching game turn nearly unplayable (Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 first, then Shogun2 ToT) And I buy games that worth it, and my eyes spot on Battlefield 3 :3

@grove12345 There is no way the beta represent the game itself, cause for I remembered my freind tells me that the beta is a mid development of the multiplayer game, the final product is to be assure as the best quality money can buy, I played Starcraft 2 beta and it crash a lot but the real game rocks, and i highly doubt they spend 4 weeks to fixed the game, they may just fixed the server and tweak it. That 4 weeks for the game is to shipped it worldwide for audience to buy with confidence, and DICE never shipped out a half bugged game, its their reputation at stake man!!!

OLVER79

Some people are confused. This isn't Bad Company 3 sebs3, it is Battlefield 3. Who doesn't want prone position? no Battlefield 2 fans.

Devin-B

I'll make a promise to everyone here and say that if the final copy of the game looks and plays EXACTLY like the beta, I will video myself shooting the game with my .45 and link it to every one of you. Then, if you like, I will eat a pork chop sandwich while playing MW3.

Devin-B
Devin-B

@grove12345 Releasing an open beta was a very smart move by DICE. They had to know how many people to expect on their servers and to make sure their servers would not crash on day 1. Perhaps your right, they probably shouldn't have released early code, but DICE probably didn't expect people to think that a beta is the same thing as a demo. They said that the purpose of the beta was to test their servers and that the beta in no way represented final code. Apparently that disclaimer wasn't good enough and people started spouting off very nonconstructive criticism.

grove12345
grove12345

I think people are also defending the beta too much. Soooo many problems on 3 different platforms and with only 4 weeks to fix them, not to mention gameplay i think is absolutely horrible. Like BADDDD. This is the worst BF game i ever played by far. Even if you believe they will fix everything, or this is an old build..... DICE just released to millions of players a HORRIBLE demo of their game to people they want to sell this to. Closed beta with 100k people okay. Not millions. By all rights they deserve the negative remarks thinking everything would be cool releasing to the public a rough release. I liked almost all the BF games. And DICE doing BC1, BC2 and even BF 1943 I loved. Who would of thought 24 players would play better than 128 players. Not sure what this fool is blabbering about.

Devin-B
Devin-B

I can only speculate at how disheartened DICE is at the fact that their audience has no idea the purpose of a beta nor are they grateful for something that is free and open to everyone. Criticizing a beta is like attempting a legitimate review of a movie based on its teaser trailer.

CIAxKillShotx
CIAxKillShotx

i think people are expecting a little too much from the beta, there will be flaws (there is a reason its a beta and not demo). also you have to remember that the vehicles is what makes battlefield, so i dont think you can say its going to be good or bad from an infantry map. im not convinced this game is going to live up to the hype, but im still going to enjoy it.

The_GooBear
The_GooBear

I've never been so disappointed in a game that was this hyped. BF fanboys like to title the CoD lovers as sheep, claiming the franchise has turned "rinse and repeat" but they can't make an individual opinion on the matter. Have you guys played the beta for console. It looks identical to BFBC2 and i don't think the full game is gonna make that great of a change. yea the lighting is better but big whoop, the core gameplay hasn't changed and the bugs from the past entries still exist. Don't get me wrong because CoD has gotten stale since MW2 but this isn't much better. If you're not a PC gamer then don't waste time with this if u never played the BadComp because the console port is practically a carbon copy.

sebs3
sebs3

No matter what the developers do, they won't please everyone. Some want prone, some don't. I know I wasn't for it. And with the beta released, not only am I finding it difficult to shoot players in prone positioning, but there are many bugs affiliated with this most recent addition.

nyran125

i agree with the producer Patrick Bach, your games are horrible. Ever since you strayed away from BF1942 gameplay, ive hated your games ever since. Arma 2 and Bohemia Interactive OWNS patrick Bach and DICE!!!!! Ive never seen a game that had so much copycatting in my life. The snow red flare scenario? ripped STRAIGHT out of Crysis done really badly. The intros? Ripped straight out of call of duty , done badly. Even the crates you see around the stages in Bad company and BF3 are ripped out of Crysis lol. It was awful. Im surprised even 2 million peopel played this stupid game. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare at LEAST tries to be its OWN game and doesnt bother with what everyone else is doing.

@lister82 The only reason they brought prone, was because a lot of people kept on requesting they add it. Yes i do not like prone because i feel it is very cheap in some ways, but it is what it is =_)

TigusVidiks
TigusVidiks

@lister82 I understand what you are saying, but regarding Camping vs Running and Gunning, that's a matter of personal tastes. You prefer R&G, others prefer Camp. BF was always more suited to Camping than CoD, because of the maps size, and because Sniper rifles behave like sniper rifles, and not like shotguns like CoD. A sniper is suposed to take down an enemie trooper that goes arround runing in open ground making noise and shoting like crazy. That's realistic. A sniper is not suposed to run arround with the rifle in their hands shoting people at close range like if it was a shotgun. Guns actually are heavy, so, changing weapons is not a instant move, that only takes a couple of seconds like you want. I think your point, is more that you prefer a more arcade style of shooter.

TigusVidiks
TigusVidiks

@MEDzZ3RO Maybe, we'll see. I also said that maybe the cars and diferent maps show something diferent and change what we are seing in the beta. But so far, and that's what I'm talking about, I'm not pleased. It's a Beta. It's Glitchy. But I'm not complaining about the glitches, that was my point. I'm complaining about the game spirit found in the beta, which doesn't appeal to me. It was a downer for me. That said, it's not like I'm gonna judge it for the one map beta, to decide if I will buy it or not. I was expecting the beta to hype me even more, and it didn't, that's all.

quick, stomp out the front door, through the car window, keys in the ignish, floor the pedal, cruise past the silly cod billboard advert and crash park through the game store glass display. get out and pull out my over sized PA system. I WANT BF3. NOWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahaha

lister82
lister82

@akuya32 The problem is the way they obviously want the game to be played. I know there aren't vehicles and gun combat isn't the only method of killing enemies, but the ground combat is so campy. I don't camp in games because it's just retarded, but I found that I was camping myself because of the high gun damage, big detailed environments, and other players camping as well. Between squad spawning and prone being allowed, camping is highly encouraged.

lister82
lister82

"..but still I only see the things we could have done better" Allowing prone was something they didn't do better, crouch only was a step up and a good idea, not a bad one.

@MEDzZ3RO Just because BF3 has a new engine doesnt make it different from other BF games, just new maps and same old game play like MW games, you make it sound like BF3 is a completly different game and its not. I have only played MW2 and have only bought one map pack so MW3 will be a good buy for me. Plus BF3 graphics are not as good on PS3 or Xbox and from what ive seen so far MW2 has better graphics and you do feel a difference with 60fps on PS3. Going from MW2 to BF3 was like a step backwards for me.

The only thing I see wrong with the beta (I know there are bugs and issues they will address later) is all the hype that is coming with this game. Before I even starting playing it last Tuesday I already had this notion that this game is going to change the way shooters are going to be looked at and played. After playing it for awhile, it feels like a little better version of BFC2. I loved BF and I think it is a better product then COD, but I do not believe it will live up to the hype. It will be a good game and I am going to get this game day one (just like I will for COD), but for the first time in a long time, I got caught up in the hype of the game and it feels like the game will not live up too it. I hope it proves me wrong.

@Edged_out Subject to opinion it depends what you're after because on console 30 frames plays a lot smoother then a 30 frame game on PC. As Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 have demonstrated, 30 fps is more then enough and highly playable. I believe DICE are after the more old-school feel in BF3 more like Counter Strike. In Battlefield 3 on consoles you get a good looking game running at 30fps; with Modern Warfare 3 you get a mediocre looking game running at 60fps. I know which I'd prefer seeing as the differences between frame rate are few and far between. Not to mention many 30fps games use clever mechanics to make it feel faster. My main issue with Modern Warfare 3 is this, why would you buy it if you already own MW2? By all accounts it's running off the same engine, has the same multiplayer design and near identical visuals. Why pay for something you essentially already own? £40 for new guns and perks sounds like a rip-off to me. I loved CoD 4 and World At War but it's now a "been there, done that" affair.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@TigusVidiks Everyone these days seems to compare every fps to Call Of Duty in-terms of fast CQB game play. Has it never occurred to you (and anyone else) that it's how modern shooters are now. Times have changed, the genre's changing. If I wanted BC2 I'd play BC2, I wouldn't bother with BF3 if it was essentially BC2 in a new skin. I loved BC2 but I wanted them to move on from that, I'm glad they proved me wrong. I'm glad it feels different, if I had to compare it to other games I'd say it's closer to Counter Strike or Medal Of Honor then any other game apart from Battlefield. The similarities to Call Of Duty are few and far between and no more significant then with any other fps. Shooting faster is one element but accuracy is more important (as it's always been as early as the Quake days). Nothing's changed, more gamers are just got better then they were years ago, having had years of practice in the over-saturated genre. Rush and the lack of vehicles is the factor here; it's notorious for being more of a "run 'n' gun" affair . Come release when you play conquest on a large map with loads of vehicles I'm sure it'll feel a lot closer to Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2. Chin up, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

Umm, Bad Company 2 is the only modern military shooter that I own because it was the only one that I thought was fun. I still play it, it's a blast online and off. The only thing he should be embarassed about is not having a co-op feature for the campaign. There are 4 freaking guys with you at all times during the entire single player campaign. WHY OH WHY couldn't anyone with the game on my friends list just jump in with me and play? That was the only design flaw I saw. Thankfully, Battlefied 3 will have co-op!

I like the beta now that I've played it more. But, whats up with the seizure inducing white flashing? It's dumb that people say to chill out cause its an OPEN beta. These bugs seem pretty substantial. Regardless, I believe in DICE and hope they fix everything in time because we all know, we will be buying this game either way. Please just leave the Apaches/Havocs the same, and i'll be tickled pink. :P
