Battlefield 3 novel due this fall

Ex-British military man Andy McNab penning new book based on DICE's upcoming shooter, according to the book's publisher.

DICE's Battlefield 3 is waging living room war this October when the game arrives for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. However, those platforms might not be the only place gamers can look for some Battlefield 3 action.

A Battlefield 3 novel is coming to bookstores this fall.

Listings at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Hachette Book Group for a $10 novel called Battlefield 3 strongly hint that there will be a book based on the title's narrative for gamers to pick up.

According to the publisher's listing, ex-British military soldier-turned novelist Andy McNab (Bravo Two Zero, Immediate Action) is writing the fiction with help from DICE executive producer Patrick Bach.

According to its product description, the Battlefield novel--which spans 400 pages--will ship alongside Battlefield 3 on October 25. McNab is no stranger to Battlefield 3, as he helped with the motion-capture recording for the game. McNab's military knowledge runs deep, as he served many years in the military, enduring torture in Iraq. His true identity remains unknown.

A novel based on either Battlefield 3 or its universe would not come as much surprise given the precedent that has come before it. Franchises like Homefront, Crysis, Halo, Uncharted, Resistance, Rage, and Mass Effect all have been novelized.

@ mikees1 What rumors about 1943? I've never been able to be on line for more than two games and you just have to google "battlefield 1943 server problem" to find out that MANY people have problems with that game. It's not a rumor, it's a fact. Get real.

@Vishant Andy McNabb uses an alias because he's still in the security buisiness. He is an advisor on certain matters in UK (though what,we'll never know). He pops up now and again in the sun newspapers (complete with blanked out face) and funny enough the last time i remeber reading something he put in the sun was when MW2 came out......he reviewed it and said how close it was to real combat......he obviously hadn't heard of BF at that point lol.

"Ex British military soldier turned author"?? Ex SAS does not deserve a mention then no? And i do not think its because the rest of the world do not know who the SAS are as quite simply pretty much everyone, well certainly anyone who keeps up with the news/games and reads will know of them. @jm3811 i have just finished playing Air superiority on Battlefield 1943, in a minute im going to play conquest on 1943.......So the rumours you're spreading of its demise are extremely untrue. Its still one of the best BF games out there, Vietnam is excellent too, but what i find is you hardly ever get a full lobby.Where as 1943 is STILL full, 3 years on!

@pataponplayer Sorry if you had bad experiences with Japanese animation. Though my comment was meant in jest, I wouldn't mind seeing one if it was good.

@dstv. Price and Soap are probably not real characters but are probably based on the archetypal SAS officer, self-reliant, calm under pressure and will get the job done. and I completely agree with u, will rent MW3 simply cos of Price and Soap, the war in the US is a distraction and MP holds no attraction for me

Is the book like a prequel or have a different story than the game or does it have the same story?

A book and a game, and where's the t-shirt or other gear? Are we trying to milk a game which was fun?

@gwailo2470 Well, that CoD-boy part was because I was mad, because I only saw CoD on your game list (no BF), and still you think you know what you're talking about when it comes to Dice and their Battlefield games. I know enough of how Dice "rolls" because I check the Battlefield blog and every fan site there's out there almost every day since I became a gamer. You're just stupid you know, because we're actually on the same line... I mentioned Origin because I think they've actually created Origin from a money perspective. And to get further into that money perspective of yours; If they're gonna top that biggest entertainment release ever of Black Ops, why sell the DLCs then, when Dice doesn't want to? I partially agree with you, like you partially agree with me. You see what I did there, that's Yin Yang baby! LOL I don't wish anything to be reality, because if I did, we would be dead right now. You know, if earth didn't excist there wouldn't be anyone bothering. =D ROFL

Funny only the free DLC's worked fine with BF2. Onslaugh is a server disaster. No, ok, Vietnam works well. Not 1943 though. Weird.

@captain_hitec Ah, I get it now. Because I'm saying something negative about BF, that makes me obviously a COD or Activision fanboy. Because you cannot grasp something being messed up on its own merits, it has to come from some kind of fanboy mentality. Let me spell it out for you. EA, who has the final say about what happens to BF3, not DICE, has decided that BF3 will not be sold on Steam because Steam requires that all DLCs be available through Steam. The logical conclusion is that EA wants to distribute DLCs on its own, exclusively. Ok. Next, you're saying that BF3 will have free DLCs, because that's how DICE rolls. Ok. So taking those two concepts together, EA is not going to sell BF3 through Steam because they want to give away DLCs for free, and they don't want Steam to give those DLCs away for free as well. Does this make any sense to you as a regular person, let alone a major corporation like EA? EA is damaging its relationship with Steam, losing game sales through Steam and so forth, for the sake of releasing free DLCs for BF3? Obviously money comes into play here. And the only way that money would be involved in this DLC situation is if money is involved. Why don't YOU use your search engine of choice and do some research on this topic, and get back to me, instead of your fanboy histrionics based on what you wish is reality.

This is what MW3 needs to do. Make a novel of the SP play campaign so we don't have to buy the game. After all they spend more time on their horrible MP game and give us a joke of an SP campaign. Although, I'd still run through it in about 6 to 8 hours. lol. But its a better way use of my money..$60 dollars or $8 dollars. ~grin~ Back to the BF3 novel, at $9.99 I could get a three novel omnibus from Black Library. Maybe Amazon will offer a discount at some point.

Well this could be cool, I never read a modern war story before and I would like to see if this is any good, if it's as good as the Gears books for sure I would love to own a copy.

@dstv. McNab left the SAS in the early 90s after the first gulf war so he's been out for a while. His novels aren't the best quality and the writing quality could do with some work but this book will sell. Just wish he'd use his real name like other ex-SAS troops do

BF3 is going to be a great game but... It's a moderen military shooter game... Do we really want to read a book based it. Sorry but if I was going to read a book I could find something a h*** of a lot better than that.

I can see a book based off Bad Company, but not the main series. Bad Company had fun characters. This will probably be tom clancy-ish (dull).

What a novel based on a shooter might look like: As the map had finished loading, I picked my load out and rushed the on to the battlefield, only to get sniped from afar.

A fictional book about a game that wants to simulate REAL modern warfare? Please guys pick up books written by real soldiers on a real war instead.Get a real point of view what war is. Tons of ex soldiers with more combat experience than this guy release books. If not get a Tom Clancy book.
