Battlefield 2142 Preview - Customization and Persistence in 2142

Battlefield 2142 isn't just about intense online battles, as the game will feature customization features to let you create your own soldier.

The future doesn't look pretty in Battlefield 2142, but it certainly will offer plenty of combat. Battlefield 2142 is the latest game in EA and DICE's popular multiplayer action franchise, and it's set in a future where a new ice age has created a desperate war for the last ice-free places on Earth. The game will feature a mix of infantry and vehicle combat, with support for up to 64 players on maps that are set in war-torn Europe and North Africa. Of course, as this is the fourth game in the franchise, Battlefield 2142 will build upon the ideas and features introduced in earlier games. This is especially the case with Battlefield 2, which was released last year to critical and popular acclaim. Battlefield 2 introduced a lot of new features that Battlefield 2142 will build upon.

The developers at DICE are aware that the persistence and customization features of Battlefield 2 are a big reason why that game is so popular. Battlefield 2 keeps track of a myriad of different statistics as you play, which are tied to your player account. Everything from how much time you spend on each map (right down to the second) to your hit accuracy with each weapon to your favorite victim is logged and recorded. Battlefield 2 wasn't the first game to track statistics, but players really embraced its system. The game rewards long-term play, because not only can you build up your stats, but you can also gain rank in the form of promotions.

When you create an account in Battlefield 2, you begin as a private, but you can eventually work your way up from the enlisted ranks into the officer corps and even the general ranks, though that requires hundreds of hours of gameplay. And rank isn't just for bragging rights (though that's certainly a big part of it), as ranking up does have its privileges. For one, players with a higher rank get priority for the commander role in the game, which lets them control the artillery, recon-drone support, and more. But the major reason to work your way up in rank is so you can unlock new weapons. You earn a weapon unlock each time you're promoted. It's not unusual to see Battlefield 2 players debate which weapon to unlock next. After all, if you had spent days or weeks to earn a promotion and a weapon unlock, you'd be cautious, too.

Battlefield 2142 will have a lot more customization options than any of its predecessors.

With that in mind, the team at DICE has embraced persistence and customization in Battlefield 2142. The sequel will feature deeper versions of all the aforementioned systems. Battlefield 2142 will offer even more detailed statistics tracking and a lot more weapons and equipment to unlock. The idea isn't simply to give the player more stuff to play with, though. Since there are approximately 40 unlocks in the game, ranging from weapons to equipment to abilities, but only four classes, this means that you can customize your character considerably.

Players in each match can have different weapon and equipment load-outs, depending on what they've unlocked and what they chose to bring along to battle. The slot-based inventory system limits how much gear you can tote along, so you might have to choose between carrying the defibrillator (used to resuscitate fallen comrades) and taking along extra grenades. If you're a squad leader, you might have to choose which sort of support drone to carry along, such as the gun droid that flies along with your squad and provides extra firepower (at the price of pointing your squad's location out) or the respawn beacon, which can be planted anywhere. Of course, this makes teamwork all the more important, since everyone in a squad can carry different equipment, so the trick will be to make sure that someone has the gear that you need for every contingency. For example, if you battle your way onto a Titan (the floating aircraft carriers in the game) and make it to the reactor core, it's a bit embarrassing to get there and realize that no one is packing explosives. Sure, you can destroy the core by firing a lot of weapons, but the faster way is to make sure someone has the explosives that you need to bring the Titan down.

Having customized characters also means that you might not know what the person you're shooting at is carrying, either. DICE expects that this will create a bit of a tactical dilemma, as you'll have to make sure you can counter whatever the enemy might bring to battle. Of course, you'll be able to redo your inventory in the time that you're waiting to respawn, but you'll only have access to those things that you've unlocked, so you can see how this system is geared toward rewarding long-term play and teamwork. The more you play the game, the more items you'll unlock and the more versatile your customization options will become. On the other hand, you'll still need to make sure that you work with your team, because no single soldier can carry everything that'll be needed in battle.

New weapons, equipment, and abilities can be unlocked, if you're good enough.

Finally, you'll once again want to make sure you rise in rank, not only for prestige's sake, but also because your chances of becoming a commander increase. Like commanders in Battlefield 2, commanders in Battlefield 2142 will be able to direct the efforts of multiple squads, as well as call in support in a number of ways. For example, in Titan mode, commanders are able to steer the Titan around the map to try and avoid enemy assaults, but the Titan can also deliver a withering barrage thanks to its many cannons mounted on its underside. This makes it a mobile artillery platform, capable of pummeling opponents on the ground below.

By building upon the proven persistence and customization features in Battlefield 2, the designers at DICE hope that they can make Battlefield 2142 just as compelling of a game. Of course, that will also depend on if the game can deliver the same kind of intense and dynamic combat that Battlefield is known for. Still, considering that Battlefield 2142 is the fourth Battlefield game, the folks at DICE have a lot of experience under their belt. We'll see the fruits of their labors when Battlefield 2142 ships later this year.

This totally will kick butt i mean halo 3 looks like, well I don't know they still wont finish it or even show us clips cause they having a hard time fitting bots into the game (lowsy game creators). It will definataly be the best game and most thought out fast created AWSOME game of the year. This is the most brilliant sci-fi shooter ever devised. Any person who likes shooters and don't like this should smacked.

As long as the server browser works, and is responsive, not the clunky mess that BF2 has, and as long as it has proper native widescreen support (like all modern games should have), *only then* can this become the 'best game of 2006' like they are hoping for. As a nice extra, a hardware cursor that runs at the same frame rate as the game would be nice.

Have you read what the feature even consists of? I'm guessing you haven't because they aren't even remotely simmilar. It's nothing like Onslaught. That's why I said it was like UT Assault. Have you read the post you are referring to? I'm guessing you haven't because those two words aren't even remotely similar.

note to developers: make sure you actually beta test this thoroughly. In particular, design a server browser that actually has features essential to online play FROM THE BEGINNING and not three months after launch. That means: Sort by ping actually works (!). Favorite server list Filters that work Buddy list Refresh list does not update the entire server menu Better response. The 2D server browser shouldn't have worse performance than the 3D engine. Joining expansion packs from the server doesn't require a restart of the whole game. If you need some tips try looking at UT2004. Epic have been doing the online multiplayer thing a while so they actually know how to create a working browser.

Titan mode shouldn't last for that long as the missle's you use to destroy the shields can also destroy the titan. It just takes a bit longer then if you were to go inside and destroy the core

Titan mode: have 2 squads fill the place up with claymores and 1 guy resupply them = a round that could last around 4-6 hrs! SWEEEEET! Sign me up!

Actually, I think casting shadows while you're pseudo-invisible is deliberate. I think I read about that in one of the articles here on Gamespot. I know, it's kind of silly, but I think it's just a way for them to leave some vulnerability to the feature. ps: um, I just spelled checked my message and "Gamespot" got marked as a misspell... all righty then...

I'm going to attempt getting a BETA key the day they allow subscirbers on fileplanet to register (for those who didn't do pre-registration) to see if I like it. Then, I will wait for the open demo to be released and see how well of a game it turns out to be. The POE2 mod is being released for BF2 this week, that will hold me over a for a little while. For those that hated BF Vietnam, psssh.. I clocked several hundred hours on that game, and almost half that with the original POE mod. It was a good game for its time, definitely worth my money...really the only reason I bought BF2, since I already perfected the art of flying a helo! :) I'm excited to see what EA/DICe will bring, but this time I will definitely give the game approx. 1 week before buying, just so I can see what others say. PEACE

I personally feel that Battlefield 2 was one of the best games in the FPS Genre. I have great hopes and high expectations of Battlefield 2142, graphics and sounds are brilliant, and so is game-play, but as with most games, there will usually always be some unanticipated downside that will only be know when you have played the game. Looking forward to its release date and I am sure many here are as well.

i'm just glad the graphics are looking better than BF2. At first I was worried this was just going to be a $50 mod for BF2 that would be exactly the same as the original with different models and skins.

I personally like BF2 and think 2142 will be a good game. I was just saying that the patches they come out with just screw it all up....BF Vietnam was a wonderful game when it came out but all these patches they released seriously messed it up. Some believe they purposely released the latest patch for BfV jsut to screw it up and force people to go to BF2. As with the Vehicle Drop kills being banned is because they are accuate. If you watch a Vehicle drop you will see that it actually lands on the spot where you dropped it. As with the supply crate, it tends to veer off course and land near but not exactly on the spot. Most of the servers for BF2 run the original maps and not the booster packs. I have all the packs and dont really like them because they are focused too much on armor and not infantry. That is just my opinion.

"i think this is the battlefield Vietnam for bf 2" My thoughts precisely! I thought BF Vietnam looked fantastic and i couldn't wait for it to come out. And when it finally did come out, it was fun for at-least a HOLE day. Complete pip off!!! Will this be the case this time? It's possible since its the same engine as BF 2. But at least it can't be as bad as BF Vietnam, witch i threw out last year, and i enjoyed that :-) I guess we will just have to wait for the demo, and hope for the best :-)

I was/am a Fanboy of the BF2 series (have all the addons etc..) but I do not see this as innovation as much as the Consolization (is that a word??) of the series..I can see XBOX 360'er and PC'ers on the Same Network playing this new style, bunny hopping, fragfest.. I like the slower, team/strategy based play..squad level stuff.. And as much as I hate to admit it.. I think QuakeWars will be the way to go for that... (Although Armed Assault still will be my great hope)...

to Entropy730, I think your over reacting a bit. I've played BF2 and 1942 for years and I have never bought an expansion pack, but there have still been hundreds of servers to play on. And $60 for a game! Where on earth do you shop. I'm from the UK and I just d/l an ISO then head over to eBay find a seller with a lot of feedback and buy a serial key for $15-20. When it's that kind of price it's well worth buying. I will definitely buy it as I loved the past games and see no reason why this wouldn't be better.

Replying to swordsman464: If you're going to be THAT ignorant about the "losers who have nothing better to do", why don't you actually read a review of BF2 with pros AND cons, and they might show you something you didn't think of. Otherwise, don't post here if you're going to blab out the first thing that comes to mind rather than critically thinking about what you're going to say. You basically wasted space right there. Thanks. About BF2142: I'm personally not buying it because it really seems to have no innovation. Titan Mode and customizable characters? Wow that's so worth my $60. I can get better and more game mods playing a game as old as UT2004, and I can get customizable characters on, well, any other game but the BF franchise. They're the last ones to hop on the band wagon. And it's so sad that people expect to be heard on forums AFTER they buy the damn game. If you want to be heard about issues you have with the game, don't buy it. EA loves milking money out of all of its franchises. In MY personal opinion, if you want to get robbed when you can go buy a better game like Company of Heroes (Yes, it's an RTS. And I've played the Beta. It is truly one of the best RTS games ever made in history) or you can invest your money in BF2142..... and buy 3 booster packs to add 5 SUPER DUPER COOL MARKETING TECHNIQUE - I MEAN COOL INNOVATIVE ITEMS!

I have personally never liked a futuristic FPS, but this looks great. The ideas of the mechs has got me hooked, I used to love the old mech warrior games. So that idea combined with the battlefield engine should make for an awesome game. CAN'T WAIT!

Er... someone mentioned planetside and this guy said: "thought_1 [...] but I admine their ambition. and well... its a neat looking futuristic mmorpg (to some degree) and its the only one of its kind." Am I missing something, or are some people thinking that Battlefield is an MMORPG? And exactly what game destroying bugs does BF 2 have? Speaking of the patches, why are vehicle drop kills banned on so many servers? No one bans supply drop kills... Besides, avoiding them is easy: if you see a shadow, or are sniping from a roof, hold "E."
