Battleborn, the new IP from Borderlands creator Gearbox Software, has "gone gold," meaning development on the console and PC shooter has wrapped up. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford made the announcement on Twitter, pointing out that work continues on the game for its beta and post-launch content.

Battleborn launches on May 3 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. As Pitchford mentioned, a beta will be held before launch, debuting first on PS4, but a start-date has not been announced.

Talking about Battleborn earlier this year, Pitchford said the game is a huge investment for Gearbox--and one that he frankly acknowledged is not sure will work out.

"We've invested more than Borderlands 1 and 2 added together into Battleborn," he said in February. "And we don't even know if people will be interested or not."

GameSpot recently played four hours of Battleborn and editor Mike Mahardy shared his thoughts in the preview piece, "How Battleborn's RPG Mechanics Extend Its Replayability."

"Battleborn's RPG elements hint at a longevity sometimes absent from multiplayer shooters," he wrote. "The extensive web of unlocks, items, improvements, and challenges are enticing, and could be the thing to set Battleborn apart in the multiplayer shooter landscape."
