Blue Byte touts the next game in the Battle Isle series as having a revolutionary combination of turn-based and real-time gameplay. But what's most striking about the game on first impression is its stunning 3D engine. Like Incubation, Blue Byte's previous 3D turn-based strategy game, Battle Isle: The Andosia War will defy gaming conventions by offering turn-based strategy without the flat, plain graphics typical of the genre. Instead, The Andosia War will be chock-full of special effects and cinematic camera angles - but the game won't forgo its strategic depth for its visual flare.

Like in the turn-based strategic classic X-COM: UFO Defense, in Battle Isle: The Andosia War, you'll have to research new weapons, units, and technology and construct new facilities as you advance through the game's two 20-mission campaigns. This research component will presumably distinguish the game from Incubation, which didn't give you a lot of options in between its tactical-combat missions.

The Andosia War's gameplay will tie together with an involving story as told through animated comic-book-style cutscenes, designed by artist Alexander Lozano. Between the science-fiction setting, the story, and the state-of-the-art visual effects, The Andosia War ought to appeal to gamers who aren't usually interested in turn-based strategy, as well as the game's target audience. It remains to be seen how the game will incorporate both turn-based and real-time gameplay, but Blue Byte and developer Cauldron probably have an ambitious idea behind the fifth Battle Isle game. Stay tuned for a hands-on preview of this promising game.
