The DC superhero showdown hits cinemas over Easter.

While big budget Hollywood movies have traditionally opened in the summer, the sheer number of superhero films coming our way over the next few years is slowly changing this. Deadpool has already proved that a superhero film can score big in February, and early tracking for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suggests that Zack Snyder's movie will also soar at the box office next month.

According to Deadline, the DC film is on course to earn between $100 million and $140 million on its opening weekend. The record for a March release is currently held by the first Hunger Games, which made $152.5 million in 2012. Man of Steel, Snyder's previous Superman movie, opened with $116 million in 2014.

The film is hitting cinemas over the Easter weekend, which means that the vital teenage audience will be off school on the Friday (in some regions), providing a full day of extra returns. Other movies that have opened well over Easter include Furious 7, which set a single day record for April in 2015.

Earlier this week it was reported that Dawn of Justice would be available in a stronger R-rated cut when it is released on DVD and Blu-ray. A bulletin released by Filmratings.com listed the "Ultimate Edition" of Dawn of Justice has been rated R for "sequences of violence."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 24, 2016. It is directed by Zack Snyder and also stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne.
