Batman saves wiped following Games for Windows migration

Players who purchased Batman: Arkham City or Arkham Asylum outside of Steam will need to start a new game, Warner Bros. confirms.

by

Some Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City players will need to start over on PC.

As a result of the forthcoming closure of Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service, Warner Bros. is moving Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City to Steam for verification and update services, the developer said this week.

Players who purchased either game on Steam can download a patch and play without interruption. Meanwhile, those who bought the game elsewhere will also need to download the patch, but it will wipe all current saves, necessitating that players start over on a new game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are on sale this weekend for $5 and $7.50, respectively. Upcoming game Batman: Arkham Origins will bypass Games for Windows Live altogether.

I feel bad for these users. I have mine on PS3 and have unlocked everything. Every so often, I check back just to fly around and beat up thugs. I'd be furious if my save game got deleted and was just told "deal with it".

I just recently got a PC that is capable of playing newer PC games and I have to say that I am really nervous to purchase games outside of Steam now. Cloud based saving with no backups is insane because of this reason. What a fail.

People shouldn't think of it as having save games wiped. They should see it as having their games cleansed of Windows Live.

But this shouldn't be a problem if we played with an offline profile, right?

That's upsetting that they are just like #dealwithit

Should have been instructions for backup and restore for the game saves.

Thankfully I've got Arkham Asylum on PS3 and Arkham City is Steam.

"As a result of the forthcoming closure of Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service,"

Does this mean every Games for Windows Live title will soon have its saves irretrievably wiped just for migrating? Unbelievable. -_-

So Warner Bros. and Windows Live have burnt us again with Batman: AC!? First it was the missing Robin code, missing Catwoman code and then to top it off duplicate game serials for PC...now this. Way to go Warner Bros!

Seriously guys, think twice before ever buying a game this incompetent company has published.

Uh, can't you back up saves and then paste them back to the proper folder after the patch?

Edit: Apparently these games only offer cloud saves. I will never understand why cloud saving is a good thing. Do people really play the same game on different machines that often?

You have to take the good with the bad, I suppose.

What if I had to use a program called GameSaver, Can I port my saves then?

Good thing I bought the console versions.

Always remember GFWL every time Microsoft announces how great their Cloud service is.

Check the steam forums for this game, there is a stickied post there on how to migrate your saves. I personally think it's a pain, but it was very easy to do. I started a new save anyway though since you need to earn the achievements again.

Supposedly you're able to move your save game files over to Steam if you're handy with a hex editor. I haven't tried it yet.

One last GFWL effort to screw gamers before it finally dies..... (good riddance)

That's why all my GFWL title saves are stored locally in an offline account, i don't care about achievements or cloud backup.

GFWL was more-or-less universally hated for being such a hideous, monstrous, poorly-designed beast. No dev should have ever used it in the first place.

Haha, won't affect me, because I'm shielded by a backlog shield. I haven't even played any of these games. I'm about to play Mass Effect 1 and Crysis 1 for the first time, that's where I'm at.

Well obviously Steam wouldn't want those save files from GFWL.  They're tainted.  Ewww.

And to think that last week I had to fucking reset my Microsoft account (because I obviously ditched that shit a long time ago) and then wait 2 business days for me to actually be able to log in so that I could finally play Batman Arkham Asylum again by connecting to GFWL! I'm gonna miss that service.

Ah, Now i can finally buy the batman games.

Even in its dying throes Games for Windows lives manages to shit over people who were forced to use it one last time.

Shame but good fcking riddance.I wonder who was "touched" enough to think that a service tailored at a console would fit on PC.

It really sucks that GFWL has been discontinued. I know it sucked, but there were many great games on it which will now cause issues due to not having GFWL. Such as in this game.

This is a good thing, it means you now have another reason to re-play one of the best game series in years. :D

I'm glad I didn't start Arkham City yet.

I see that Arkham Asylum has Steam achievements now. Looks like it's time to play that one again. ;)

@lordgodalming

Like with everything else it's good for checking user behaviour. There's money to be made from information regarding how people play games/use the internet etc.

I've played the Arkham games, but I know the feels. My backlog is a nightmarishly long list of games from SNES to the PS3/X360 gens. Handhelds are included as well. Although my reasoning is that real life happened. :(

@Unholy123 When you die, you lose control of all bodily functions which may lead to shitty situations, so GFWL is imitating what happens to a real corpse.

@plaintomato Dark Souls stores the saves in your hdd. Just copy paste to a safe location.

Nobody knows yet.  From software hasn't said anything officially. (The "statement" where they said they were patching it to use Steamworks was fake, apparently.)

Jasbro

@ziproy Nobody can give a definite answer, they usually spout some BS about it making gamers more social and giving them easy access to playing with friends or some other crap.

@LADIES_MAN_2013 Doesnt this just give you a new reason to replay these great games again?, i know it does for me.

pongley

@LADIES_MAN_2013 They had issues due to having it :) But yeah I have a lot of games with no word on patching.

Thanatos2k

@OhNoesItsDobby Why did having a save file mean you had no reason to replay it?  What does the presence of a save file matter at all?

LE5LO
LE5LO

@Saketume That is an awesome point, if you're not in marketing already I think you should be.

@lordgodalming What baffles me is why they didn't allocate a directory for saves on our computers in the first place. Did they really think this would never be a problem? Or they just didn't think about it at all? Who knows, but I doubt this will be the only game affected by the roll-out.

Hurvl
Hurvl

@Daian I like old games and games with mods and endless replayability, which all equals spending lots of time with each game, so that I constantly get behind on the newer games. I still play games from before 2002, but most of the games I play now are from 2004-2006.

iMpLuX

@pongley @john_matrix_007 Must have been this year then. I replayed AA last summer when DKR came out and all the achievements I got were thru GFWL and when I checked Steam right now, it says I have no achievements thru Steam :(

I wish GFWL achievements could transfer over to Steam. I'm going to lose all the achievements I worked so hard to get for BioShock 2, Fable III, Fallout 3 and GTAIV just to name a few...

LE5LO
LE5LO

@Saketume @lordgodalming

I just read GfWL saves can be stored offline, like Steam, Uplay, etc. So keeping that in mind I guess we can't say they didn't give us a chance to make back-ups. -_-

pongley
pongley

@iMpLuX Yeah I think it was Christmas last year they were added. I haven't heard anything about any game other than Batman, Bioshock the F1 games and Fallout 3. Rockstar hasn't said anything and certainly hasn't patched it yet.
