Batman: Arkham City ships 4.6 million in first week

Initial admissions to action sequel for the criminally insane more than double those of the original Arkham Asylum, according to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Last week's outbreak of Batmania has grown into a global pandemic, as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that worldwide shipments for Batman: Arkham City surpassed 4.6 million copies in the game's first seven days on sale. That's more than twice the first-week tally of the game's predecessor, 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Way to clean up those streets, Batman.

While Rocksteady Games' sequel has bested its previous title's totals out of the gate, it still has a ways to go before it can become the biggest Batman game of the generation. The 2008 release Lego Batman has sold more than 7 million copies, and it has a sequel of its own on the way next year.

Like its predecessor, Arkham City drops Batman in the confines of an unconventional prison. But where Arkham Asylum stuck players in the halls and courtyards of a mental hospital overrun with the Joker's goons and allies, Arkham City deposits them in a sprawling neighborhood of Gotham City that has been walled off to contain the criminal element.

Under the watchful eye of "warden" Dr. Hugo Strange, who knows Batman's secret identity, inmates of Arkham City are free to do anything they want short of attempting escape. In addition to Strange, the game features Batman villains like Two-Face and the Joker.

Arkham City debuted on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last week. A PC edition is set for release November 15. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of Batman: Arkham City.

Wonderful game. I'm almost through with all the collectables now, and it's still fun to glide around and beat up thugs.

@Jinjuri shipping and selling selling = money + shops running out of stock shipping = filling stock 5 x selling = 2 x shipping selling = 2.5 x shipping so if the game is "shipped" it becomes sold

How ironic that the Dark Knight is doing a Dark Knight, selling much better than its predecessor.

Batman: the only DC character I respect, and admire. Batman: Arkham City - Game of the year for sure. If it doesn't win, may there be riots in the streets!!!

@Son_of_Bmore Couldn't agree more. All you need is an engaging story, great gameplay mechanics and an engrossing atmosphere.

@PeterDuck Perhaps your rant was intended for GTA5 announcement? Batman is made by Rocksteady, and its coming out on November 15,with a lot of good stuff on PC,tesselation,Nvidia Physix, etc.

Even if this game doesn't get game of the year (which it should) at least it'll probably get an award for best game based on a popular comic license. Now i'd like to see if Rocksteady could make a good Superman game where other developers have failed to do so. or a game featuring any of the other DC comic characters like Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow...Etc!!!

i'm under an impression that many here don't realize that 'ships' does not equal 'sells'.

@MasterDZ0522 Well, it was close. Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million in its first week. But they're both very close, so there isn't a very easy way in comparing the two. But it's a good sign for Arkham City. Modern Warfare 2 went on to sell 20 million units just by June, so if Arkham City keeps going this way, it'll have 20 million or more.

Its about time that we that like single player camp. games that last longer than 6 hours got some thing we can look forward to playing. I do like some multi player on line games, but when i buy a game it is for the campaign.

@Grovilis Normally, I would take the fun to bash you but I agree. I was a huge fan of the first game but Arkham City doesnt impress me that much. Id give it a lower score then the first game.

Really want to play this, but 60 bucks is just a bit much to spend for a singleplayer only game in my opinion unless it's an RPG like Skyrim.

Does this top MW2 or no? I'm pretty sure it did, unless MW2 was 6 mil in the first week...
