Barry Sanders named Madden 25 cover athlete

After six rounds and 40 million votes, former Detroit Lions running back chosen to grace cover for EA Sports' upcoming football game.

Former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders won ESPN's cover vote and will grace the box of EA Sports' Madden NFL 25, the publisher announced today. Over 40 million votes throughout six rounds were cast before Sanders was revealed winner on ESPN's SportsNation last night.

Sanders defeated current Minnesota Vikings halfback Adrian Peterson in the final round, taking 58 percent of the vote. During his progression to the cover, Sanders beat out high-profile NFL players like Ray Lewis, Marcus Allen, Joe Montana, and Jerry Rice.

Madden NFL 25 is currently in development at EA Tiburon for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a release expected on August 27. The game features a new iteration of the Infinity Engine, which claims to offer "more polished physics simulation," as well as an all-new Force Impact System.

This year's installment is named Madden NFL 25 instead of Madden NFL 14 to mark the franchise's 25th anniversary. The series has sold 99 million units to date.

We get a new Madden every year, but haven't seen an NFL Street since PS2.

Life is a disappointment.

Not to take the glory away from Mr. Sanders but I hope this franchise is dead in 12 years and by then another developer arises to the challenge of making a good American football game.  I got tired of Madden years ago.

25 years of Madden, with 10 years of innovation.

How about instead he comes back and plays for the Lions? Last time they won the Super Bowl it wasn't even called the Super Bowl. And cars were called horses.

Too bad this still will not make the Madden games worth playing.

The curse shall manifest itself in the form of a stage light falling on him during analysis.

Barry went out on top and now he's back on top being the cover athlete for Madden 25.

I hate that Barry retired when he did. The Lions should have let him go so that he could chase a title for once. Now if Tecmo would bring back Tecmo Bowl once the NFL licensing deal expires, they can put Bo Jackson on the cover of that.

It was a real treat to watch that guy run. He could have been the greatest running back ever but retired. I was sort of shocked. My FFB team suffered too.

The only other RB that could compare to the pure scale of talent to Barry was Bo Jackson and his career was sadly cut short. Congrats Barry Sanders, you were an inspiration to watch and a gentleman on and off the field!

Can't have a Madden Curse if the player is already retired....

Why people saying the Madden Curse was broken last year? It just bounced off Megatron and hit the entire Lion's franchise.

Barry could EASILY have retired with the most career rushing yards, but he didn't care about records.  He walked away because he was sick of losing - and the league lost it's most exciting player.  For all his flash and sizzle during the play, he never made a scene after scoring a TD or caused a ruckus in his personal life; Kind of player most coaches dream about.

Been a Niner fan since 1983, Watched Montana and Rice destroy the league. I voted for Barry over both of them, He was by far the most exciting player I have ever seen. I still watch his youtube clips here and there. Never gets old seeing him juke the entire defense.

Guy did more with less then any player In pro sports, Could you imagine Barry's number had he and Emmitt Smith traded places? They would be untouchable.

Greatest RB ever. Barry Sanders had so much skill.

Hey isn't the EA license with NFL expiring this year? I was pretty sure it was some time in 2013. Really hope NFL doesn't allow EA to have sole license to develop NFL games and lets 2K back in to the market. With the competition between two games the fans win and get well developed games instead of the same ol' rehash Madden has been since 2K has been cut out the mix.

Just looking at what 2K did with their basketball 2K series is just amazing and is the most realistic sports simulator available and EA hasn't been able to respond with a NBA game for years now. Fans should petition the NFL to allow 2K back and not give the monopoly to EA again.

Why not John Earl Madden on the cover?

it is good that he is on the cover but i still think it would have been better for it to be montanna or rice but sanders is still an excellent choice

@prodigest They don't make NFL football games anymore. Only EA Sport makes them because they only the NFL licensing and all it's players. That's why the only NFL game on the market is Madden. Which is why I don't waste my money every year on it.

Jacen22

@ddoggbritt16 @Tribesmaster My biggest gripe on Madden games is that when I throw the football to a receiver all the defenders including ones that had their backs to me react towards the receiver  That takes the realism out. Also it has gone stale in innovation since 2K was forced out of the picture.

I just buy the games one year back now, I have Madden 2012 rite now I got for $18 and when Madden 2014 comes out I'll buy Madden 2013 on the cheap.

FallenOneX

@acelogan1989 For years, almost every athlete on the Cover of Madden either got hurt the following year, or the team did poorly. At first, it was a funny coincidence, then people started taking it seriously. I remember people wanting Michael Vick on the cover just so he could get hurt.

@blackace @prodigest  I agree totally. Stopped supporting this series back in 07 when they bought out the competition.  Competition leads to an overall better product.

@Jacen22 the new madden doesnt seem to do that the new one is actually really realistic
