Baldur's Gate: Reloaded mod for Neverwinter Nights 2 out now

Re-creation of first Baldur's Gate CRPG that requires Neverwinter Nights 2 has been in development since 2006.

by

A 3D re-creation of 1998's PC RPG Baldur's Gate is out right now under the name Baldur's Gate: Reloaded.

Baldur's Gate: Reloaded will re-create the 1998 CRPG original and its expansion.

Players are required to have a copy of Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir, to play the mod. Gamers can play the game either in a third-person perspective or a top-down view. The re-creation features both the original first game and its expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast.

It is available as a free download and is no way affiliated with BioWare. Details on patch notes and installation instructions can be found on the mod's Nexus page.

Baldur's Gate: Reloaded has been in development since November 2006 by game designer Drew Rechner and a small team of developers called Baldur's Gate: Reloaded Team.

Wow a Gamspot editor gives a game no one not in the press has played a 8.0 and that gets +16k comments. Meanwhile a team of devs/modders spend 7 years remaking the entire Baldur's Gate game in a 3D engine and gives it away free! And there will maybe be 100 comments?  Bah I give upon the internetz.

I'd rather have BG3 but that's pretty cool I guess!

I was excited until I realized this was made on the OLD Neverwinter Nights 2 engine.  Sheesh, there is such a thing as taking TOO LONG to develop a game when by the time you finish, the engine is already super outdated.

And if this is free, how are they supposed to make any money for all that hard work?

All that work and effort, to bad they cannot sell it. They deserve to make some money off of it!

I just so happen to have bought NWN2 Complete from GOG the other day. Time to get this, because I was not impressed with BG:EE in the least. Seems like you can install BG and get some player patches and it runs better... Hopefully BG2:EE will be better.

This reminds me that I never finished Throne of Bhaal.  DANGIT.

Lol, a mod that consists of six parts and in total takes up about 3 GB. Wow, that's massive! Now do Baldur's Gate 2 plus expansion or why doesn't someone remake TES: Daggerfall in the Skyrim engine :P.

Wow, what a great day for PC gamers!  Congrats and enjoy!

YAY! Now we can play BG1 in one of the most clumsiest gaming engine >__>

I admire the hard work and time spent on this and I hope they got the attention they deserved but I'm not even touching this thing with a ten foot pole...

My question now would be: "Is it better to play Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or this?"

Much faith in humanity is restored!
Anyone else think the team behind this should Kickstarter a sequal using the Oblivion or Skyrim engines? I'd totally sell whatever I have to in order to make donations

Cool!  Although I just checked the price of NWN2 and expansions on Amazon.  Still quite a lot of money...

And yet another opportunity to play this fine title. I'm really looking forward to experiencing it in 3D. Congratulations are in order!

@neroist That's because everybody is too busy playing it to comment, and only dumb kids and trolls post on Gamespot.

@Aphyosemion there are some people that still love the engine used for the game neverwinter nights 2 and are playing the game over and over again.  Obviously not yourself as anything older than a year or two, must be so unplayable or lack functionality as an engine, that a remake on such with updated textures and whatnot, can't be any worth your while.  Which reminds me of all these newer developments of older gamers on a brand new engine, the works all redone from scratch, turn out to complete rubish (kickstarter is just flooding with these to start).  I'd play this over a remake any day.

@Aphyosemion The mod creators have said that it is fan art. I think it is quite awesome when people do things out of love for something. Money does not have to be the motivator for everything in this world. Remember when people made games cause they love them?

@Aphyosemion Some people who like the remake will donate. Of course not all but it happened before and it will happen this time too.

@Hurvl I played the morrowind remake in the oblivion engine and it was really, really dull... without voice acting, these nostalgic remakes just don't do it.

@cyberarmy I'm surprised they didn't make it on the original NWN engine because the NWN2 engine is such a mess. It actually runs WORSE on my newer computers than on the one I had back when it came out. My characters running animations stutter because the game can't handle being run on a newer computer.

@SandRunneR Haven't tried out the mod yet. But I would say that it will most definitely have a different feel than the original. Not sure if it will have the same magic that captivated me with the original. I will play this mod none the less as the BG was awesome. But if you haven't played the original yet I suggest you do.

@SandRunneR

You know what I like about the classical BG? They leave the character appearances to your imagination, and their faces are immortalized by the portraits. The NWN2 engine doesn't do facial features that well because it's an old engine, and the characters like Elminster, Drizzt and such probably look worser on that engine that you would have liked them to look.

@jj2112 Yeah, it works with any version, because they're all basically the same.

@GameYakuza That's something I've been concerned about as well, how do they solve the issue of voice acting? I guess they don't solve it all. I really think voice acting improves a game a lot, so I think games with great voice acting don't make good remake's in other games' engines. I don't know how much voice acting there is in Baldur's Gate 1, but I believe it's mostly text. RPG's aren't played for fancy graphics anyway, so sometimes you can't beat the original.

@plaintomato @Hurvl Just my personal opinion but Dark Souls is a very overrated console game with shallow lore. It doesn't hold a candle to Skyrim in any department other than enferior rpg dept.

@Bellum_Sacrum @neroist @plaintomato @Hurvl Its my opinion that Dark Souls is overrated. Last I checked my opinion was not fact of life. I just find Dark Souls lacking and dull. My little nephew loved it, and people on the internetz hyped it up so much I bought it. Very dissapointed with all the hyped reviews.

On the other hand I have been TES fan for years. I find the lore more interesting than Greek mythology, Star Wars and many other loved mythos. So Skyrim was seen though rose tinted glasses you could say.

@neroist @plaintomato @Hurvl If Dark Souls is overrated I wouldn't know what to call Skyrim. At least Dark Souls had the common dignity to not be a big pile of bugs, glitches and exploits.
