Baldur's Gate 3 may be possible despite "legal hell"

Developer Beamdog adds that Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition is on hold.

by

Despite the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate being taken down from digital stores last week due to legal issues, developer Beamdog said that its long-term goal of making Baldur's Gate III was still possible.

Baldur's Gate fans may not want to hold their breath for a third game.

According to company president Trent Oster (in an interview with website Rock Paper Shotgun), the chances of the company resuming work on the original Baldur's Gate franchise was mixed. "Best case, we can sort this out soon. Worst case, this could be in legal hell for a while. I like making games, but this contractual dispute [issue] keeps me up at night," he said.

Despite this, Beamdog has yet to give up on making Baldur's Gate III happen. "Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition is on indefinite hold, as is the current patch. Baldur's Gate III, we are still interested in the concept, but currently I'd say we were very demoralized." The developer declined to name name the publisher that is pursuing the trademark.

I apologize for my strong language, but, by the fact ,I have chosen to engage in a discourse with you in the year 2014, in reference to a game originally released in 2001, we both are guilty of Baldur;s gate's immortality. THIS CREDENCE ALONE DESERVES A SEQUEL OR SPINNOFF

Considering how BG2 Throne of Bhaal pretty much ended the series story arch there'd be almost no need for a sequel continuing the storyline.
I'd rather see a spiritual sequel that pays tribute to the original strengths and gameplay styles of the series rather then trying to force the story forwards

Only if they didn't fuck it up. Which by today's standards, I couldn't possibly see BG III being legit. BG1 & BG2 are hard acts to follow. Plus, Bioware's games have been fucking terrible (anything after BGII).

Which they wouldn't look so bad if they didn't have to live up to the standard they set with the BG series.

To the people on here posting about the console BGs... (which LITERALLY weren't the same games as the PC BGs) STFU please. Thanks.

I haven't ever played Baldur's Gate, but I would like to play it. I've heard great things about this series. It's disappointing to hear the legal trouble with Baldur's Gate III.

Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Baal pretty much concluded the series. Although I wouldn't mind another sequel, I'm not exactly demanding one. So, I echo everyone else's sentiments: leave the series alone if the product won't be up to standards.

to be honest i'd rather have the franchise untouched than have some developer use its name and create a mediocre rpg. They did not really impress me with bg1 remake. Besides if someone has to continue, it should be bioware, not beamdog. In an interview i think, i heard them say they were very pleased how the series ended and that was why they did not make any sequels.

I played baldurs gate 1 and 2 on the ps2, hope this number 3 is made for ps3 then.

Fuck the publishers going after the trademark.  I mean C'mon, you've got 15 years to get a goddamn Balder's Gate 3 title out and you did nothing about it.  Now these guys wanna get a chance to actually make one and you're gonna bully them?

Honestly it's a shame that the only reason somebody can't make a sequel to BG2 is because it's trapped in legal hell due to our absolutely batshit IP law.

But I don't know that I really want them to make it anyways. BG1/BG2/ToB was a complete story and there isn't really a reason to continue it. If they wanted to make a spiritual successor type game ala Project Eternity, I'd be totally fine with that, but I don't think there is any reason whatsoever to make another sequel in the BG series.

Admittedly if they do end up making it I'll no doubt buy it and play it, and if it's good I'll gladly eat crow. I just don't think BG is a game that needs another sequel. It's a gaming masterpiece as is.

Amazing. Legality will stop them from making a game no one else wants to make. A D&D platform that has been dead for several generations, and the lawyers are still involved? This society is too litigious.

So what about the redo of BG2? This is what I really wanted as I never finished the original BG2. I was over halfway through when my comp crashed and I had to redo the system. Lost my save game and didn't have the desire to start over at that point.

Yes sob story boohoo, but I was really looking forward to BG2 Redux...I guess I can just forget about it for now :(

Ugh. How American. "Let's take a neat and concluded story and make a sequel." What's next PS:T2?

And no, Torment:ToN isn't a sequel. The Bhaalspawn saga is over leave it be.

To all the dummies saying that Bioware should be the company to make BG3: Jesus Christ, no more BioWare please. Bioware will come in and make every character bisexual, shit on the story and dumb the game down as much as possible. Bioware isn't what it used to be.

The Black Pits was awesome, we need more Overhaul and less Bioware.

I'd buy the two games on GoG and follow a guide to combine them into one huge game.

@Wej_accept_it  They are talking about starting a new story. In other words... Not a direct sequel. Just a story in the same universe.

@Wej_accept_it  You dumb sonofabitch mutherfycker. Wej I created this account for you. To think that yourself and Saeverok were the only children to be progeny of a dead god is laughable. Tamriel is a larger place than we can fathom. THEY ALREADY HAVE US HOOKED. This is my first hard "import Character" play through, having already survived an easy generated character.

Your missing a far bigger picture, dumbshit.

THE PROTAGONIST will start from any dungeon, warehouse, or building unaware and go on ventures to kill the other devils, fix the bridge across the river styx,  or insert itself into the pantheon of Greece through a misspoken time displacement spell. \

You can never be written into a corner you did not intentionally devise. Think more about the games your playing, dumbasss.

@BG_Guru Those console games were a joke, overly simplified silly combat, no charecter development, lame plot... It was like fan fiction from a bunch of kids whose sole inspiration was a trailer for the Hobbit film.

@Fistan87

Don't know about bioware, the direction they've been taking their games recently has been questionable to say the least. I'd rather have obsidian, the successor to black Isle. From the looks of it they've been doing a fine job with project eternity, a refreshing return to the old form we had with the infinity engine games.

@depman1972 There were never any PC BG ports over to any console. The BGs you played on the ps2 were LITERALLY different games. Terrible hack and slash games at that...

@Fursnake You can always just grab it on GOG and DL a few community mods to fix the remaining bugs/widescreen issue. It's aged pretty well, honestly.

I am sorry but I hate people like you. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY THE SEQUEL.

If you want you can pretend the sequel was never made and continue thinking the saga is over.

I hated dragon age 2 but that doesn't mean I wish it was never made as some people enjoyed it, I am happy with dragon age origins and its nice concluded story, DA2 doesn't ruin that in any way.

end rant.

@Banhammered1 I don't think I ever did a playthrough of BG1 where I didn't more or less stick with what was clearly meant to be the canon party (based on how BG2 panned out), so I never really ran into this issue, but it's definitely a shame looking back that only some things carried over, and it drives me nuts that 80% of the party members from BG1 never made it into the sequel, even if most of them were useless anyways.

Both of them were great games, but yeah. Just goes to show that BioWare never really offered anything more than illusory choice despite what people might say about their glory days.

lindallison
lindallison

@Banhammered1

Ah Bioware.  Yeah how hard would it be to put some of the companions you ended BG with in the cages of BG2.  Making Imoen a major story element was also a mistake, as it presupposes too much about the player's actions in BG.

@PsychoticHamstr It's Atari. Before their recent bankrupty they had exclusive Dungeons & Dragons licence and Baldur's Gate is an D&D-based game.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara was released recently because of Atari is gone.

@I_ArCh0n_II'm not particularly sorry that I hate people like you. People who advocate taking a dump on art in the name of commerce. It's a closed story, most of the endings involved the player ascending into divinity.

That's why movies like "Hamlet 2" are a joke even in the title. Because at the end of Hamlet, everyone died. Making a sequel to Hamlet is stupid. Likewise, the Bhaalspawn are dead, and yes the story was very much the story of the Bhaalspawn. You want a sequel? Why? Justify why a sequel ought to be made instead of telling an original story.

I hate people like you because you feed the laziness and lack of creativity because you are too comfortable in your own world to brave the creative wilds. Do not destroy something which is to be loved because you can't be bothered to find something new.

@thorn3000 For some reason I can't explain when I first heard about Dragon Age 3 months ago I got this feeling that this will be the game that everyone will be talking about. One really good game could turn it all around and this could be it.

thorn3000
thorn3000

@SauhlGood @thorn3000 @williebazerka I am talking about dragon age 3 inquisition, it looks pretty good and they pushed the release date by 1 full year, so it seems they are trying to make it the best possible...DA2 had its problems, but it was still a good RPG, yes RPG, horrible combat but characters and their stories were great...as to you mentioning ME as being a shooter instead of RPG, it was in Best RPG of the year category last year, so yeah, it's an RPG and not a shooter, by official standards.........I am a fan of old school RPG as much as the next guy, but you cannot be blind and see that RPGs of today are created differently and Bioware, well I liked all their games, all their RPGs including the recent one...sure they might be Different, but are they worse? hardly...just the standard changed....either way if you want a core rpg experience just wait for M&M X later this year, that is what I am waiting for...

SauhlGood
SauhlGood

@thorn3000 @williebazerka uhh dragon age 2 was already released and its arguably not even a rpg anymore, its an action game with waterd down rpg elements..  Mass Effect has been over simplified every iteration, it is now a good action game with good story... the only game you mentioned there that is a rpg is Neverwinter Nights, and its OLD made by a team that knew RPG's(even by its day it was considered watered down) and most players today would have their head spin with the amount of mechanics/skills they would have to get used to.

thorn3000
thorn3000

@williebazerka @thorn3000 I meantioned 4 games...dragon age will release a sequel next year, mass effect has released a sequel last year....that is old?

@thorn3000 Deal with what? Most of the games you mentioned are older games which proves my point.
