Baldur's Gate 3 - How To Romance Halsin In Bear Form

Can you truly bear this romance in Baldur's Gate 3?

The Baldur's Gate 3 Halsin romance made the rounds all over the internet before launch. This was due to a release trailer that teased the possibility of more than just cuddling with a bear (being bear-naked, if you will). As such, many have been wondering if such a scene is actually in the game. Well, it certainly is, and we've got you covered in our guide.

How to Romance Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3

The Baldur's Gate 3 Halsin romance occurs during Act 3. Getting to that point, however, is quite time-consuming, and there are specific decisions that you need to make.

Halsin as a Party Member and Approval Gains

Here's a quick summary:

  • During Act 1, you should rescue Halsin in the Goblin Camp/Shattered Sanctum. You need to save the Tiefling refugees as well, instead of betraying them to Minthara's forces.
  • When you have a chance to speak with Halsin, always offer friendly, supportive, and positive responses. You should also welcome him to your camp, though he won't join as a party member just yet.
  • In Act 2, it's imperative that you keep Isobel the Cleric alive in Last Light Inn. There are certain decisions related to the Dark Urge and Nightsong, which will cause the inn to get destroyed, with all its inhabitants killed. This has the potential to prematurely end any attempt to recruit Halsin, let alone romance him.
  • In Last Light Inn, talk to the sleeping man, and then tell Halsin about it. This leads to a lengthy quest chain where you find a child named Thaniel, whom Halsin is seeking. Later, when Halsin is between dimensions, defend the portal at all costs to prevent his death. After this battle, you'll be able to recruit him into your party for good. Finish any remaining tasks mentioned by Halsin, too.
  • Whenever you talk to him, do ask about his past lovers, as well as his opinions of you.

Since Halsin joins your group many hours into the campaign, we rarely had him in our squad. Surprisingly enough, his approval was still quite high, and we guessed that it might have been because we just completed his arc, while responding favorably.

How to Romance Halsin if You Already Have a Lover

The next tidbit about the Halsin romance in Baldur's Gate 3 concerns your lover. In our experience, there were moments that prevented a relationship from progressing because our character already started falling for another companion. Examples include the Shadowheart romance and Karlach romance. If you've fallen for someone else, then the other will simply be happy for you, and will only want to remain as friends.

Halsin is quite different: he's very happy to share. Here's what you need to know:

  • Progress further in the campaign until you reach Act 3 (i.e. after beating Ketheric Thorm).
  • Upon arriving at Wyrm's Crossing, try to rest in your camp a few times. This will lead to various cutscenes.
  • In a short while when you attempt to rest, you're told that someone still wants to talk to you. If it's Halsin, then you should pick the following responses:
    • "What are you saying exactly?"
    • "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested - but I'm already in a relationship."
    • "You just want to share? What do you mean?"
    • "I will speak with Shadowheart." - This might be different depending on who your lover is at the time.

Talk to the partner in question and tell them about Halsin's proposal. For us, it was Shadowheart, and we picked these replies:

  • "I wanted to talk to you about us, and exclusivity in our relationship."
  • "He's open-minded and willing to share... as long as you are." - Don't accidentally choose the other option where you break off your existing relationship just to be with Halsin.

Shadowheart was okay with the idea. She even wanted us to talk about the experience of "climbing Mount Halsin." Return to Halsin afterward, and tell him that your lover is "open to the idea."

Left: Halsin is okay if you already have a lover; Right: Ask your lover if they're willing to share.

Love Scene: How to Make Halsin Switch to Bear Form

There might be another scene when you next rest. But, soon enough, you'll get the Baldur's Gate 3 Halsin romance when you rest at camp. You approach Halsin, who's waiting for you in a glade. Choose the following replies:

  • "Why, is the big, strong Archdruid Halsin nervous? Adorable."
  • "Of course, what do you think I'm here for?"

Your character and Halsin will kiss, but the flood of emotions becomes too much, and he suddenly transforms into a bear. You can then respond with:

  • "Don't apologize. I like it."
  • "Yes, change back again. Let me have the beast... and the beast have me."

Halsin will remark about how the creature will be untamed, vigorous, and... large. To which you ought to answer with: "Large is what I'm here for."

Yes, we certainly had the same expression.
Yes, we certainly had the same expression.

And with that, he reverts back into Bear Form and the camera pans to show a squirrel, who's just as shocked as we are.

That's it: that's all you need to know about how to romance Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3. It's definitely a weird moment, but it's downright hilarious all the same.

Baldur's Gate 3 is filled to the brim with activities and secrets. You'll no doubt be part of an adventure that can take countless hours to complete. For other tips, you can visit our BG3 guides hub.
