Back to the Future: The Game First Look

Telltale Games continues the time-traveling adventure in this new episodic series for the PC and the PlayStation 3.

by

Telltale Games announced a while back that it was collaborating with Bob Gale, the cocreator/cowriter of the Back to the Future movies, to create an episodic series that takes place shortly after the events of the last movie. Using its signature storytelling capabilities, Telltale has created Back to the Future: The Game, a traditional point-and-click adventure as well as a cinematic experience. Aimed at fans of the genre as well as Back to the Future buffs, the game will feature Christopher Lloyd, who reprises his role as Doc Brown, and actor AJ LoCascio, who does an excellent job of reenacting Michael J. Fox's character, Marty McFly.

The doc and Marty, as they were in 1985.

Andy Hartzell, the writer of the game, stopped by to show us the intro cinematic, which gives a good idea of how the story will pan out. Without giving away too much of the story's beginning, the game is set six months after Marty has returned from 1885, and the bank has foreclosed on the doc's home. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the DeLorean appears in the driveway with Einstein and a taped message from Doc Brown asking for help. All we know for now is that there will be some time traveling involved and that you will need to head back to the Prohibition era to rescue him. Along the way you'll also encounter the teenage version of Emmett Brown (voiced by James Arnold Taylor) and, of course, a member of the Tannen family, Kid Tannen (Biff's father).

The game will play very much like Tales of Monkey Island, where you are free to roam around the environment, clicking on objects of interest and talking to anyone and everyone. There are different dialogue trees to choose from, but the game is linear, so no matter what you choose, it's not going to change anything drastically, but it's funny to hear the various responses. The game is meant to be simple and accessible, especially to potential newcomers who are fans of the movie. A built-in three-tiered hint system is included, where if you spend a bit of time circling around, the game will gently nudge you in the right direction. If for some reason the goal still hasn't gotten through to you, you can get clues and, eventually, a straightforward answer.

Telltale works up until the last minute for each release, so the build we saw still needed some finishing touches before being shipped. However, the opening sequence looked and sounded great, and for anyone who has seen the movies, it will take you back to 1985. You'll also notice how much the main characters resemble the real actors back in the day--with a certain Telltale art style--as the developer got permission to use Fox's and Lloyd's likenesses in the game.

"Great Scott!"

Back to the Future: The Game will have five episodes. You can preorder the full season at Telltale's site for $24.95, which will include a free copy of Puzzle Agent, and part of the proceeds from your purchase will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease. The game will be available on the PC/Mac on December 22 and will come to the PS3 and iPad shortly after.

@WaffleBlaster Yeah i no he has Parkinsons for a long time but last year there where romours that he might do a BTTF4 film but that he didnt want to play the geeky kid on a skate board like the others as he more grown up. But it must be taking it out of him even worse now. Dont no what to say here as i carnt say get well soon but hope he not letting it get to him. This is just too Heavy Man.

@ skipper847 It wouldn't be possible considering he has parkinson's, look up a recent interview of him if you don't get how bad it is

Ugh, I was so hoping for anything except a point and click. While I am a big fan of the series and a revival is great for everyone, I think Back to the Future would have been a great action adventure game. I mean who hasn't dreamed of being behind the wheel of the all famous time traveling deloran? I can say however, if this game does well economically it might possibly open the door to a few more Back to the Future games; maybe even a remake or 3 created for real gamers.

Just played it. It's not much of a game...really is just "click the left mouse button to proceed" type of thing. But the story so far is excellent and they've done an amazing job of ressurrecting the characters. Def worth buying if you're a fan!

I just got Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse couple of days ago, and I am enjoying the first episode greatly. It is amazing how much the game has advanced since last season. Therefore, Telltale will surely improve on that game with this new title. Back to the Future is on my buying list as soon as I thin some of the backlog during the holidays. For those fans who love everything Telltale and adventure genre, I recommend another great adventure by Jane Jensen: Gray Matter.

"AJ LoCascio, who does an excellent job of reenacting Michael J. Fox's character, Marty McFly." Is that a hint that there not doing a BTTF4 fim with Michael J. Fox then as at one time is was roumoured but with Michael J. Fox not doing the voice over i dout they will do the film now. :(

Their deal with Michael Fox to use his character resembleness? Donate part of their earnings to his charity. They should be doing it anyway :S

Ah, clever with the time stamp. Took me a minute to realize how this was posted on Dec. 31, then I looked at the year.

@ steve69 I wasn't winging or moaning, I was stating a fact. It's not cool when this happens to any of the consoles or the PC, it makes no sense to limit a game's availability to particular platforms. You're response is that of a typical fanboy, referring to Xbox owners as "you lot". We're all gamers here. The people that gave me thumbs down are haters, and have no reason to do so. I would like to play God of War III aswell, but I can't. That doesn't mean I don't sympathize with other platform owners who can't play Gears of War and/or Halo.

"They say it's directed at the fans, I'm a fan but because it's not on Xbox 360 I can't play it... I'm not buying a new console or PC just so I can play one game." Welcome to the world of the PC owner mate, game companies (ROCKSTAR to name but one) do this to us all the time, so to hear an xbox user whinge and moan the only time I can recall it hapening to you lot is probably why peeps have given you the thumbs down. I couldnt care less tbh im just glad to not be treated as a second class citizen for a change as has become very much the trend for PC gamers. Looking forward to this very much though I doubt it will have much in the way of longevity like the ghostbusters game, was a very rewarding experience but not one that you tend to repeat all that often.

I'm definitely interested in this, but Telltale games usually just involve hitting the left mouse in the right place and not much else, plus very limited locations. We'll see.

This could be interesting. Loved the movies, so this could be a nice bonus. A pity Michael J. Fox can't do the voice-over though. This being said, the man is a giant, seeing how he fights --not only his own battle, but that of thousands of other people. Let the force please be -and stay- with him... JJ

Shame they weren't able to get all the original actors to reprise their roles like was done for the Ghostbusters video game.

Don't know why people were thumbing down my previous comment. It's true, I own an Xbox 360.

I pre-ordered this one. Love the movies, game looks like a lotta gun, and a simple point-n-click adventure will be a nice break from the harshness of the Bad Company 2 Battlefields.

@KC_Hokie - You might not realize this, but there's a lot involved when it comes to putting your game out on multiple platforms. You can't just do it because you want to, and I'm pretty sure that developers don't avoid it because they're idiots.

@otanikun - the events of this game come after the third movie.

I'm both frightened and happy at the same time, did nobody learn from the first Back to the Future game when it was released on the original Nintendo? I love the movies and would watch them all day if I could, but a next gen game based on an event that supposedly happened after the first movie? The movies constantly go from one to the next, so how does this fit in?

This game is coming out to the ipad but not Xbox 360? The people running this company are idiotic.

No, not really. I grew out of legos when I was 9. Lego video games are great for kids, but I mean come on, a grown man shouldn't be interested in characters made out of lego design. Let's hope this game is worthy of the Back to the Future title, *fingers crossed*

I'm just curious, does anyone know why this isn't this coming to the Wii or 360? I can't find this anywhere on UK shopping sites, I really like the look of it, very unique and great use of the Back to the Future film rights etc. And at all the people complaining about graphics, games don't always need HD graphics to be good you know, remember your 'old school' gaming days or learn! =/
