Auto Assault regional servers unite

North American, European servers to be consolidated into one; sci-fi MMORPG will retain other language-specific settings.

In a few days, the gap between North American and European gamers will become much narrower. NCsoft, the publisher of the sci-fi online role-playing game Auto Assault, has announced it will combine the North American and European servers into one this week, due to feedback from the game's players.

The merging of the two servers will occur on Thursday, July 13, and it will join players from the two continents. The location of the new server, to be dubbed Nexus, will be in North America, the company said.

"The Auto Assault player base has asked to be able to play on one combined server," the company said in an announcement on the Auto Assault Web site. "We have concluded that this is a great idea. The merge would increase the server population greatly and offer the players a much more satisfying and diverse gameplay experience."

Although the two regional game servers for Auto Assault will be merged, localized message boards, chat channels, and in-game language settings will continue to be offered in English, French, and German. NCsoft promised that more details regarding the changes are "forthcoming."

In other recent news from NCsoft, the MMO publisher's Austin, Texas-based operation laid off nearly one-quarter of its workforce last month.

I played beta, the pre-order days and the 30 days included in the retail-package and i must say it didn`t convinced me to pay a monthly fee for that. The Story`s are almost the same and you have to go back and forth to places where you already been, but only available when you finished a mission before. Too many items, too less important drops, no auctions, no mail, too less or buggy group missions, low pollution of human players, no in-game graphic sequences for quest, hard to follow a storyline. The later changes to make leveling up harder and the difficult to handle crafting gave the rest to me to say good bye. Its too bad, cause the game has high potential. Maybe not the right management behind it ?

I played the beta of AA and I thought the game was boring. It felt like a single player game not an MMO. I was disapointed because I was looking forward to the game. I like MMO's, I've played SWG which was ok, WoW which was too much work and Planetside which is the only one I still play to the day. I hope Webzen's line-up (ie Huxley,APB) isn't a let down like AA was to me.

In my local EB Games, if you purchase any Guild Wars product you get Auto Assault for free. Youch. They can't even hardly GIVE that game away. [edit: Sorry. Old news.]

I play AA, and it's not bad. It's a bit monotonous - the feature set is pretty small, but it's fun and different. Unfortuantely, it's an effort put out by a very small team and I'll bet done on a small budget as well, so it has a lot of bugs. That being said, the gameplay that is there is pretty fun, especially in "casual game" doses of like an hour or two. It's not a bad game. It's not an incredible game either, but people are way more critical than I think they have a right to be. For example, the person who said the story was bad is flat out wrong. Maybe they didn't play the Mutant faction like I did, but I found the writing on the mutant faction to be some of the best I've seen in MMOs, period. Better than WoW, EQ2 or any other MMO I can think of. It's got real emotion, deep characters and real human motivations for what they do - I can't say the same of 90% of the content in WoW. For that reason alone I'm damned glad I checked it out. It's nice to know that someone in games really can write well. :)

Hmmm..... so the servers aren't populated enough?

WOW Best MMORPG out there with more than 7.000.000 PAYING Customers, can any other MMO take WOW out of the Road ? I dont think so.... at least not yet.

Karjah - NCSoft also has Lineage and Lineage II, both of which are 1 million+ subscribers! While that's not WOW numbers, it still blows everyone else out of the water. And don't forget, NCSoft is just the publisher for Auto Assault, not the developer. I'd like to see Auto Assault become profitable (not sure what that would take), or at least break-even for NCSoft, and if consolidating servers achieves that, great. The game can get better over time, but it won't get any time if NCSoft pulls the plug. Now that there's an undeniable king of MMO's (Blizzard with WOW), I'd like to see companies stop trying to outdo WOW's subscriber numbers and focus on expanding MMOs beyond just magic, elves & orcs, to see what else is possible, and to do it profitably. I think NCSoft is doing just that. They're going to stumble during the process (there are risks involved), but in ten years from now we'll all benefit from it because other less adventurous companies can profitably follow the trails NCSoft blazed here. Otherwise we can expect to see a steady stream of MMO's trying to out-do WOW at being WOW, and that's not going to do anyone any good...

Actually if you go to the AA official boards over on net devils website you will see that people where begging for a server merge.

The "Now Playing: 90" number is completely meaningless, of course. I have never used that feature, and I'm sure many other readers don't either... to say nothing of the people who don't read Gamespot. In a market not dominated by a single player, Auto Assault might have stood a chance. It's not a bad game, it has some original ideas and at least it's not yet another uninspired fantasy grindfest. But there just isn't enough to do in it to make it worth playing over the long term. It's a shame, because when new ideas fail, it makes the EAs of the world think "See? If we do anything out of ordinary, it will fail, so let's crank out more clones and sequels." Hopefully it can survive a while independently... there are quite a few MMRPGs that are doing just fine despite failing to attract millions of players.

I don't play it myself, nor any PlayNC game. Really, their problem is that they don't put much work into any of their games. Companies like Blizzard, who take many years to release a game like WoW, get all the customers because they really take their time to make it good. PlayNC has a bunch of games, that each have something different about them. If they combined their ideas into one game, and really took the time, they could make a blockbuster.

OUCH. 90 current AA players. I've played on MUDs that averaged well over 90 players on a slow day. The most recent news stories concerning AA show a fairly grim timeline ever since it was released: Auto Assault hits asphalt - good NCsoft-Austin lays off 70 - not so good Auto Assault regional servers unite - also not good Safe to say this game was a miserable flop.

Karjah

who do they think they are fooling. You can only intice so many gamers with guild wars "becuase it's free" Besides Guild wars NCsoft really has not had any success in the game world at all. Sadly Unless this company starts becoming more inovative and more submissive to accual player feedback they probally won't be around for much longer. :(

I played AA for about 2 months. Sadly, I paid full price for the game.... Although this was a fresh MMO concept, it horribly failed in everything it was trying to do. The story/missions were poorly written. This game was clearly missing that special "Something". Nice try NC, hopefully this has served as a learning experience for you guys. First NC "lets go" several staff members, then this server merger...things aren't looking too well for them.

Info just taken from Gamespot: Auto Assault>> Now Playing: 90 Guild Wars>> Now Playing: 6,057 I don't know the real story but seems to be other reason than "feedback from the game's players". Anyway play in a server in the other corner of the world is everything but satisfying gameplay. Farewell~~!!

I've played it, the concept was pretty good but nobody seems to be interested in the game.

Yes, faster than a speeding Matrix... Guess I should cancel those Duct Tape listings on eBay. (Actually I only played AA for one day in Beta.) Can we say the wheels have officially come off this merry MMO bandwagon?

A server merge based on "player feedback". Good one. A server merge in an MMO is a surefire sign of no one playing, and they usually come up with some ambiguous reason such as the above. The Matrix Online going from 9 to 3 servers for example. And I can tell you player feedback was anything but complimentary regarding that.

Auto Assault was not that good of a game I got to play it for free and not really that great but if it was to come free you would see more people playing it plus bring in more money.

dwmorrow

Heh, they're merging cuz no one's playing the game and the servers were probably too sparsely populated. As I recall The Matrix Online did something similar.

This game must be doing bad because Best Buy had an offer where if you purchased Guild Wars Factions you get a copy of Auto Assault for free. NCsoft probably won't do so good with the other MMO's they plan on releasing.

This game was almost completely broken during the time I participated in the beta test, so it's not a surprise that they're uniting the servers, hardly anyone playing on either is my guess. I'd hate to see the ping times for the European players on a North American server.

I tried it during Beta, and the Free Trial...and sadly, it does suck.

I'd play Auto Assault if it becomes free like Guild Wars.

I doubt its because of customer requests. They say this to try to save face a bit. This game has been, unfortunatly, a disaster since day 1.
