Australian government will consider reclassifying Saints Row IV

Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider application for the review of upcoming action game.

The Australian Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider an application to review the classification of Deep Silver's open-world action game Saints Row IV.

The game was refused classification on June 19 for anal probe weapons depicting "implied sexual violence," among other things, meaning the game was effectively banned in the country.

"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context," a June 25 statement from the board said.

"In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or prescribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

Saints Row IV launches in the United States and Europe next month on August 20 and August 23, respectively. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Australia is making the right decision for me, because as an adult I'm sure if I played this game I would take copious amounts of drugs in order to be better at ramming dildos up unsuspecting civillians

I do feel for the Australian consumer. Fuck people who wouldn't be interested anyway telling you what you can and can't enjoy, in your own home, when it hurts nobody.

to hell with the government, i say import this game and anal probe every pedestrian in the game on your 60 inch tv, record it and post the vids on youtube for the sheeps and the board in australia to see, no such thing as stupid people, only stupid governments lol

The Australian review board is a joke and hasn't seemed to change at all with the inclusion of the "Adult" classification. What's the point of having an adult category when you're still blocking all forms of entertainment because of .005%  of the actual product? They are adults! Let them be adults and make their own decisions.

I'm not too bothered we won't be getting this 'anal probe weapon'. Which seedy old fuck thought it was a good idea for a weapon anyway....

Oh! They finally DID realize that when you're 18+ you might VERY WELL have had your first contact with sexual stuff? :D

waste of tax payers money.

I am still going to import the game.

Oh great we still might get this crappy game after all.

they should think in the terms of expanding the rating system with 25+, 30+, 40+ and a unique 50+ with special dedication to Saints Row 4.

Why is this still news, if you have two brain cells you should know by now government censorship doesn't work. Just import it from UK or Hong Kong, you probably get them cheaper too.

Sure, dont fix the overarching problem with having a censoring board.....just give the fithy masses what they want this one time and hope they shut up.

I just dont get why a citizenship would stand for being treated like children by corrupt bureaucrats and politicians.  Its a frackin' game. Why is it the governments business?

Worst of all, who's standard is the cut off for this censorship? Do you even know who has the final decision on what gets censored, Australians? Implied Sexual violence is as vacuous as it gets.  Will they censor Bugs Bunny because he dresses like a girl sometimes and then Elmer Fudd shoots him.  Its Implied Sexual violence, ya know.

It is whatever they want it to be.....its not a standard, its a method of control.

The whole thing fires me up.

Here's a thought...if you create a higher rating for games like these, use them. Haven't Aussie gamers had enough crap by now?

Saketume

So they're going to ban it again then?!

Thanatos2k

Government corruption at its finest.  They finally pass a law to allow mature games then just refuse classification the ones they still want banned.  Nothing has changed.

I wonder how these people even get into that line of work. Basically it's just being a professional prude. Is there some skill/experience requirement? Is there a course they need to take? Or do they essentially just pull people off the street?

Lighten up AUS, it's really fun.

Trust in your own people, that they are sensible enough not to go out and actually do the stuff in game. What happens if en aussie imports it from abroad ? I'm serious, I would like to know.

The censors are taking it way too seriously

To be honest I really don't give a shit about this game... but I do give a shit about Freedom of Speech and not allowing censorship and while this doesn't stop censorship, hopefully it will become one less example of it. Good for you Aussies, maybe someday your gov't will finally understand that a grown ass man/woman should have the right to enjoy any media they want (I don't mean that in a rude/sarcastic manner either).

Amirygon

Just another problem with government regulating any form of speech at all or anything non-coercive to begin with; when given the opportunity, gov't will stop you from doing things it considers immoral no matter how subjective it is.

the whole POINT of the new Aussie ratings system was so that things COULD be rated.  Now they're "refusing" classification?  How can you REFUSE to classify something?  If you're going to do that, why even have the new 15+ and 18+ legally enforced ratings?  Since any time the Aussie board gets a game that may fit into one of those labels, they'll just "refuse" to classify it.  They've basically created ratings for games that they have no intention of ever using.

I got SR3 from PS Plus and gave it a try last Friday. I laughed to tears with the character editor. It's a really fun game, a very welcome surprise considering that I'm not a big fan of sandbox games.

Why wasn't the "Gat is back" trailer on the front page. SR4 suddenly gained my interest.

they just show their biassed attitude towards some types of entertainment. show some justice by also banning movies like killer joe which are unmistakebly  worse than this....... but i doubt it if they have the balls to do it

Gamer: "I'm a grown man in my 30's, I have no children, I work a full time and pay my taxes . I want to play this game"

Amster_G

Instead of banning the game, maybe just up the rating? Different regions have different ratings, like M for mature in NA (17+) or 18+ in EU, I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Australia, just rate the game TSFTS (Too Sensitive for this Shit).

All over the world, governements shouldn't be allowed to ban games --or any kind of entertainment.  Decisions about playing or not playing a game should be made by the consumer, not politicians who always have an agenda...

@Justforvisit NO!!! sexual content is the DEVIL, it gives you aids and kills you!

But seriously, could you imagine living with one of those classification board members, do they censor their own bedroom antics?

flammable_zeus
flammable_zeus

@Alecmrhand The idea of a classification board is a great one. Classify different works of art and media so that consumers can make more educated decisions about them.

The only problem is when they feel they have the right to make those decisions on our behalf, like this whole situation.

wgerardi

@Ilikemyname420 They pull people of the street under the condition they are old, grumpy, out of touch and have a general hatred for all things fun.

@AlexFili Volition is the one who decided to release a censored version. They're basically supporting censorship.

DWalker131

@berserker66666 not in their eyes, they can't even trust an adult to play an adult rated game responsibly, i think if you wonder deeper,  you'll be pretty disappointed with our government lol

@StonerDemon As the Book preaches: 'there will be more joy in heaven over 1 sinner who repents, than over 99 just persons who need no repentance' xD

TirOrah
TirOrah

@Amster_G You're not wrong, in NA and EU they do have ratings like those. The problem here is, Australia does to. In fact they specifically created a higher rating so they could label games like these as such. Games that used to just be denied altogether. Except in the case of this particular game, they pulled that old trick again... Like many people here say, what's the point of a new rating if you're not going to use it?

DWalker131
DWalker131

@flammable_zeus @AlexFili they have 2 options, 1 sell the watered down version in australia or not sell it at all in australia at all, so they decided to sell a watered down version so us aussies get a chance to play, but then again, it would have been cheaper for them if they  just told us to import  instead coz i'm pretty sure thats what everyone is doing anyways

StonerDemon
StonerDemon

@shuwar @StonerDemon Then consider me a "SR3 illuminated" XD XD ... I just don't have enough time to invest on sandbox games, but I know some of them are really good, like Red Dead Redemption (I left it on 14% because of lack of time). The only sandbox game I've finished 100% is Bully.
