Aussie PSP price drops

Core price for PSPs Down Under falls to A$279.95 ($230); Platinum title cost also reduced.

Now cheaper Down Under!

It's happened for US and UK gamers, and now it's finally the Aussies' turn. After stating a price drop for the PlayStation Portable wasn't imminent only a few weeks ago, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has now announced that the PSP will indeed be cheaper Down Under. From today, the core PSP pack will cost A$279.95, down from A$329.95.

The price drop comes after similar reductions in the US and the UK, which saw the PSP's cost fall $30 to $169.99 in the States and down £20 to £129.99 for the Brits. And it's not only the handheld which is dipping its cost--Platinum titles for the PSP will now cost A$29.95, down A$10. To coincide with the new price, SCEA has released five new Platinum titles--Ridge Racer 2, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone, Loco Roco and Moto GP.

SCEA has also announced a street date for the latest PSP add-on. The PSP Go!Cam--a digital camera attachment that plugs into the PSP's mini-USB slot--will arrive in Australia on June 21 and will retail for A$79.95. The Go!Cam can take still shots, video, and has a built-in microphone to capture audio.

PSP has THE handheld lineup this year. They have: WipeOut: Pulse God of War: Chains of Olympus Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow FFVII: Crisis Core Silent Hill: Origins Castlevani: Dracula Chronicles X Parappa the Rappa Tales of the World Monster Hunter Freedom 2 Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion's War and the list goes on... Not even DQIX will be enough to take on that killer lineup. Plus there are titles that will be hitting in the future like Dissidia Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry. I don't know about the rest of the gaming community, but a lineup like that makes the PSP a must have for its measily price. It already has a great lineup and 2007 is looking to be the PSP's best year yet. sure it may not sell as well as the DS, but according to several 3rd parties (Konami, namco, capcom), they get the same or better software yields on the PSP as they do with the DS. Beleive it or not very few 3rd party DS games have sold over a million, in fact more PSP 3rd party games have reached 1 million than the DS. Which is probably why more 3rd parties are giving more support (Konami, Namco), or the same support (Capcom, EA, Ubi) as the DS.

The thing thats really killing the PSP is lack of great Infrastructured games. If Sony would concentrate its efforts on producing more online only games than Ad-Hoc, the PSP would rule! Ad-Hoc only games might be huge in Japan, but here in North America we prefer online enabled games. Nintendo's DS system is winning the multiplayer side when it comes to handheld online games. Right now the PSP is missing that killer online game... hopefully it'll happen with Monster Hunter Freedom 2 when it comes out this summer!

Too bad that the PSP software sales has been SO dismal! Just check out the analysts' reports (though, before this price drop has happened). But even though the PSP may be selling more, it may not have a very significant on-flow effect to its software side for the very reason that many of them only downloads the games (illegally, of course) from the Net. Yes, I'd rather only have digital downloads than the very silly, totally FUBAR, f#$@ing stupid physical boxes (In today's age for portable handhelds? No way!) & thick pile(s) of battery-taxing UMDs that would fatten up your pockets, therefore making you look all the more unattractive when you want to try to flatten your pockets as much as possible what with all of your mobile phone, wallet, keys, let alone a PSP!?! Flash memory units are far, far better at conserving the battery's lifespan, so there you go. Sony should have opened up their own online digital distribution website for the PSP games, or a portal for the third-party retailers/content deliverers to sell them, but they haven't, so that's why so many people are still downloading the illegal copies so easily.

Alot of cranky PSP comments, hmm is it worth the price? well that all depends on what kind of gamer you are. Personally its not realy in my taste so far waiting for silent hill and maybe an FF game other than that I just watch movies and listen to mp3's on it.

It's rather refreshing to see people defend the psp for a change. So many people have been hating on it when it truly is a great hand held. Glad to see the price drop and I'm looking forward to the camera in the US.

All this time, PSP haters have been banging on about its price. There you go, price reduced. Plenty of games play and many on the way. Now buy one or F off.

Hey i see more losers here who whine about the success of the PSP, sucks to be a DS owner who can't afford and appreciate the PSP :)

Unlike DS owners, we aren't insecure about our purchases so we don't need to make useless comments on rival handheld news items like "it's still worthless". We don't buy stuff just because everyone else is buying them. We buy what we want to play. And there really is far better games on PSP than there is on DS, if you check out the reviews for both systems. DS offers mostly short experiences you'd want to play for a few minutes here and there, like Brain Training. PSP has more stuff I'd rather play, like Daxter, Ratchet, MGS3: PO, Burnout Dominator, Virtua Tennis 3, Outrun 2006, Killzone, Lumines II, Ridge Racer 2, and my entire collection of PS1 titles. Plus upcoming titles like Crisis Core, Tales and God of War. You can keep your touch screen. I have access to a DS at home, but it's clear which handheld I play far more often.

NinjaMunkey01 But we asked for your fanboyism? Sorry to tell you, but saying the PSP is more "grownup" is rather childish. As a grownup, I can do all of the things you mentioned on my PDA. BTW, why should Nintendp drop the price f the DS/DSlite? It's still cheaper than the PSP, and outselling it. The only thing a price drop now would do is get people to buy both.

Guitargamer1

PSP isn't really overpriced for what you get. A mobile gaming device taht you can put pictures, movies and music on. DS is cheaper but I like a few more games on the PSP.

Japan needs to drop their price now. They've held their current price far too long.

'already got a ds who needs a psp ? 'Beymaster1 we don't need your fanboyism beymaster. the psp is an amazing console that can store videos, music and photos and unlike the ds its more grown up. the ds is a good console i know but if i had a choice of playing my psp or a ds psp wins every time.

Woah, $80 bucks for the Go!Cam! ... Not too sure if I'll be getting one. I'm glad they have dropped the Platinum prices, but the only place I have seen them selling for $29.95 since the price-drop was in a Toys-R-Us catalogue!

its funny--you have two different types of handhelds---psp and ds-----power wise the psp is more powerful but the ds is trying to make the touch pad--yippee--anyhow the ds is the same price at it was couple years ago--no price drop--and you know the prices of the electronic gear is cheaper now than it was couple years ago--but do you see nintendo saying--the nintendo ds is now 99 bucks i dont think so--greedy company..and sony gets yelled at al the time--how pathetic

You cant compare PSP with the DS. 2 different consoles which both have advantages and disadvantages so stop argueing. I think its a good thing that the PSP price is droppin although this doesnt mean Sony will reduce the price for the PS3

DS doesnt need stuff like video conferance programs. Because Nintendo dont feel the need to add all that junk that maybe 1 in every 10 people will use. The PSP just doesnt appeal to me even now, while they are starting to put plenty of new games on it, its still full of ports and games that are getting ported over to the PS2.

PSP is a beautiful sexy machine. U can play music and movies plus you mod it with free games. A few new games coming out got me excited like GOW.. and free wi-fi phone call thing.. if it work, cut down a load of my phone bill. Where I make most of my call in city and we have wi-fi point here in Brisbane, Australia. Yeahhh -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sony is good.. they use PSP strength to hit DS's weakness. DS weakness is hardware power like video conference and multi-media. If Sony focus on this area, it would attach new market and would hit ipod eventually. About games, PsP need more game like GoW Olympus. Can u imagine a whole new DMC game on PSP? Niccce

"DELTAsnake Who cares, the PSP is dead, I han't touched mine since Lumines 2" Dead to you, but it has actually sold over 21 million in about 2 years, so at that rate it is set to sell about 50 million units, and they only recently had price drops (those sales are pre-price drop). While the GBA may end up doing better (78 million) and the DS is selling like crazy, the PSP is doing much better than everyone thinks it is and will probably stay around for years to come. Besides, the PSP is only REALLY doing terrible in Japan (17 million DS, 5.5 million PSPs, there worst territory).

the-very-best

Still too expensive considering you can get the DS for a much cheaper price with better games at the moment. I am glad they dropped the price though, I may consider a PSP way down the track when it's a lot cheaper.

I still find it funny that ridge racer 2 never made it to america. The first one is probably the best psp racer out there in america too.
