Aussie game charts: June 23-29

Metal Gear Solid 4: Snake eaten. Super Smash Bros. Brawl reigns supreme.

by

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has spent the last two weeks at the top position of the Australian game charts. However, despite the initial fanfare of Solid Snake's final adventure, highly anticipated fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl has stolen the limelight this week, clinching the top spot in its debut down under. Mario and his crew--which includes Solid Snake as a playable character--have moved into the coveted first position, seeing MGS4 plummet to sixth place overall.

Nintendo will be happy with the week of June 23 to 29 because, according to Australian data tracker GfK Australia, the company held six of the 10 overall sales positions--the top three going to titles on its family-friendly Wii console and the remainder going to its popular DS handheld. Despite the risk of dropping off the list entirely last week in ninth place, Wii Fit has clawed its way back to finish the week in second. Nintendo's Wii Play hardware bundle finished third overall. The Xbox 360 version of Battlefield: Bad Company was the only title to wave the Microsoft flag this week, finishing fourth overall, while the PlayStation 3 version of the military shooter managed seventh. The hand-cramp-causing portable version of rhythm game Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS rocked out and made fifth place in its first week on sale. Grand Theft Auto IV floundered on the PlayStation 3 this week, dropping two places to sit at number eight. Despite strong sales last week, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time were able to muster only ninth and 10th, respectively.

I really wish they'd include some actual sales numbers, all this shows is the sales rankings, not whether they sold an substantial amount of these titles

What's with the Australia bashing? Have you three even been to this beautiful country? That means you mjax211, MaverickMRB7, and packster. Might wanna think before writing things like that on Gamespot AU. Congrats Nintendo, love what your doing keep up the good work.

@ wiifan001 Erm... yeah, Nintendo sell games well in Australia and suddenly that renders all other games on other consoles irrelevent? From your name alone I'm going to guess you haven't played those either?

Just as I expected. As soon as fanboys hear that Brawl trounced MGS4 in Australia, the country/continent automatically doesn't matter anymore. I guess Japan shouldn't matter anymore either since all Nintendo does there is dominate the other companies.

Was wondering the other week if Brawl would knock MGS4 off the top, didn't expect Snake to be out of the top 5 though. And I am so happy that for once, the Sims 2 isn't taking up more then half of the friggin PC chart.

"Who cares about Australia?" Hm, Australians maybe? Shocking, isn't it! How selfish. If you're not Australian don't post in AU news posts, simple, sheesh.

ugh, I really wish they wouldn't include Wii Play as a game, it's embarrassing, why don't they just start counting tamagotchis that people buy and see if those make the top 10

What's this? What's this? Oh yeah!! Nintendo is supreme. That's right. Nintendo got #10, 9, 3, 2, AND #1. So I guess even with lack of 3rd party support, this simply proves that we don't need as much as the other systems. ;)

Woah, maverick, Brawl is mch better than MGS4. But yah, who cares about Australia? Atleast not every PC game in the top ten are Sims...only 4.

I love Brawl with a passion that burns deep within my soul. So deep, in fact, that when time and space itself expire, my love for Brawl will still live on.

Was I the only one who didn't like Brawl? I played it for a week, unlocked most of the (important) stuff and then got sick of it. When friends are over we never play SSBB because it gets boring so fast. I still think SSB:M was better

You all do know that it came out last week for the rest of the world how didn't happen so of course it is going to on top. Smash is just that good.

Seems expected. Brawl is all kinds of awesome in one awesome package of awesomeness. And Snake is in it.

Wow, and still selling strong, goes to show that despite some complaints the game (SSBB) gets, it still sells really well.

I love it how Wii Fit is nearly top of the charts. Shows just how much of a bad indicator sales can be of how good something is.

Well, Brawl is an awesome game by any standards. And it makes good use of what the Wii can do. So I'm not surprised it's doing so well.

 @ Those last week who said MGS4 isn't going to leave number 1 for a long time. Like I said, how on earth could anyone possibly think Brawl wasn't going to take over?
